Do you think the show is sexist?

I used to love I Dream of Jeannie when I was a kid and the show recently started airing again. I was very happy to see it back on the air because I do think it's a great show and a lot of fun. But after watching a couple episodes (and some other old shows like the Jetsons) I realised that Jeannie, as much as we all love her, is a stereotype of the man's ideal woman (from the man's point of view). She's blonde, extremely ditzy, beautiful, she calls him "master" and all she wants to do is serve him (I understand that she's a genie and he is actually her master in this show but the name and that bind to him adds to her appeal). She's even willing to give up her powers just to marry him and be a housewife. I really do love the show but boy was I offended when I worked out this connection!

The answer to this question is a resounding "Yes!" but the same could be true of all the shows we liked to watch in the 70s & 80s. For example, Samantha in Bewitched, she may be a witch with powerful magic but she's just a stay at mom with a child. The show needn't have been so sexist, ditzy & blonde if the plot did not include the geni falling love with her master and wanting to be human to marry him. I used to enjoy the show too as a kid but now on top of being sexist I also think it's incredibly corny in the acting style and the dialogue. Afterall, actors then didn't find the character within as with Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman rather they simply acted.
