The Stupid Caveman Award for the Twenty-First Century goes to the NBC Executives who decided to replace Tonight Show host Jay Leno with Conan O'Brien, a man who is already being challenged at 12:30 by the infinitely more talented and entertaining Craig Ferguson. This decision will take its place in history alongside New Coke and the Edsel. And what will be the result?
Jay will have a new show on another network. That show will quickly establish itself as the new number one late-night show. The Late Show with David Letterman will continue to be number two. The Tonight Show, home to such gifted entertainers as Steve Allen, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, will sink to the bottom of the ratings, a victim of one of the biggest corporate blunders of all time.
The Tonight Show is one of the few bright spots on NBC's otherwise dismal schedule. It's the number one show in late-night. It earns $100 million annually for the network. So what do the NBC geniuses do? They throw the host under the bus and demolish the set that was home to Johnny Carson for almost 30 years.
Brilliant. But then, wer're talking about the network that gave us "Fear Factor," a show about people eating worms.
