I don't live there, I just visit a lot. I can tell you that prices inside London are outrageously high. So try to find a place in a surrounding town instead if you can.
The transport system there is brilliant, so you really won't need a car.

i liv in south london and the prices are lower than all the outskirts of London. u actually won't need a car at any point ur in london, cos there is always traffic and the public transport is easier. don't take the bus, take the tube.
you'll also need an oyster card cos it's cheaper than buying a tiket everyday.
u can get oysters at a local newsagent.
also bring some warm clothes for the winter cos it gets bludy freezing!
