How did Danielle survive The Purge in 1992?

She claimed that she had been living in her shelter for 16 years prior to 2004, making her living there since 1988.

The Purge happened in 1992, four years later, and the only survivors outside of The Others were Kelvin, Radzinsky and Danielle.

Kelvin and Radzinsky were in The Swan and thus protected. How did Danielle survive though?

And what of her encounter on the way to The Black Rock where she met "infected" Others?
