Some of you may remember me doing a series of articles called "The Beggining Of The End" for season three's final few episodes. This is season five's set of reviews, entitled Destiny Calls. For those of you who don't remember, it's a series of recaps and explanations and then things to tantalise you for the upcoming episode(s). Let us timeskip back to the season premiere.

Because You Left

Ben just wanted Jack to shave so that he didn't need to grow a beard too

"How did we get here? How did all of this happen?" "It happened because you left Jack."

For many casual Lost fans this episode revealed Marvin Candle's real name, and strangely showcased his child.
Miles perhaps? "80% of the people on this boat are lying about something."
Miles perhaps? "80% of the people on this boat are lying about something."

Is s/he perhaps someone we have seen before? Perhaps a strange asian man with an ability to detect the dead? We see Faraday (my favourite S4 character) either in the midst of a time jump or something else. Then back on the mainland we see the start of the return to The Island by Ben & the Oceanic Six. Season one slaps us in the face again on Island with the Beechcraft, Ethan and more of The Swan. We also see Locke obtain a compass, which keen-eyed Losties recalled was from Richard's speech in Cabin Fever, in which he asked a young Locke "Which of these things belong to you already?".

"You sure the knife belongs to you John?"
"You sure the knife belongs to you John?"
Kate is also visited by some strange men under the employ of someone they don't want to mention, but if I had three guesses at who it was, they would all be Claire's mother. Carole Littleton may have heard her daughter claiming to be pregnant whilst in a coma in Par Avion, seen Aaron and started to wonder over the past few years. Widmore and Sun have a meeting to discuss getting back at Benjamin Linus. Jin's death has made a real impact on Sun and it seems this season Sun will become a real badass, and it's what she's needed for a while. Hurley & Sayid fight off non-specific bad guys, which ends up with Sayid getting a dart in the neck, allowing Naveen Andrews to have a few easy days of filming.

Des, Dan & DHARMA. Hmmm...maybe that's next week's title

The Islanders aren't doing too well either, with the beachcamp missing and The Swan coming and going. Locke being shot at and being told by Richard that he has to die is surely no fun either. Just before The Swan vanishes again, Faraday manages to get word to Desmond that he needs to find his mother at Oxford University. He doesn't quite get to tell him her name, but I'm sure we can all hazard a guess at Ms. Hawking based on the awfully photoshopped picture of her & Brother Campbell seemingly taken at Oxford University and her pre-exsiting relationship with Desmond.

The Lie

Just a few more dead Losties to see and Hurley has the full set

"Libby says Hi."

Unfortunately the first few minutes of this episode wherein the Oceanic Six discuss their lie could have easily been left out.

To be killed before you're actually born. How strange

In the more interesting stuff we arrive in 1954 on Island and Neil Frogurt (actually his last name according to the press release) being shot by people we later discover to be The Others/The Hostiles. Everyone runs off but a man named Widmor...I mean Jones, yes, Jones captures Juliet & Sawyer, but Locke comes in to save the day like he does.

$2.99 for a lb of hamburger meat?! How ludicrous. Ben demands his money back

In 2007, Ben and Jill seem to have the matter of a maybe-not-as-dead-as-he-seems Locke handled while Kate and Sun have a talk about their children and Jin. Sayid is taken to Jack to be reawoken at the hospital where they realise they have left Hugo at the mercy of Ben. Hurley recalls Sayid's advice and gets himself arrested, much to the dismay of Ben.

We see a familiar face working in what seems to be a DHARMA station, but is in fact placed in a church. This woman is none other than Ms. Hawking who tells Ben he has 70 hours, presumably to return to The Island with The Oceanic Six. Will they make it back in time, and if so, will The Island be in 2007 when they get there?

Jughead
Thunderbirds are go! *waits for anyone to laugh* No? Okay then.
Thunderbirds are go! *waits for anyone to laugh* No? Okay then.

"Same reason I do. They're Others."

Typing Jughead in to Wikipedia earlier this week lead me to believe there would somehow be a bomb in this week's episode and there it was.

In regards to disposing of them bomb underground and with some kind of cement, might you direct your attention to this strange mystery?
A big toe, What could it possibly be hiding under all that cement and stuff?
A big toe, What could it possibly be hiding under all that cement and stuff?

Jeremy Davies again shines through as Faraday and confesses his love for a woman seemingly not long for this world in this episode. Charladay shippers put on your worry hats! Penny gives birth to baby Charlie, which makes sense from both sides of the family and Des tries to track down Faraday's mother, but there's no record of him or her. After finding some strange connections to Charles Widmore he bursts in to his office and demands an address for her.
Er...Mr. Widmore, this is your phone number. I know Desmond. *wink*
Er...Mr. Widmore, this is your phone number. I know Desmond. *wink*

A young Widmore runs back to Richard and the rest of The Hostiles while Locke easily tracks him and starts Richard off on the previously very strange involvement in his life to see if he truly does become their leader as he claimed.

Ellie seemingly knows Faraday, perhaps from one of his jumps in time but we don't get to learn much more as they vanish again.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!

The Little Prince
Darlton did announce at Comic-Con that we would be getting Rousseau's back story in season 5

And with the recent press release mentioning many French characters and only one being female, I'd say we're timejumping to back when "Montand lost his freaking arm!". Should be good.

It'll take me a while to get back in to this but for now, Namaste.

*In regards to the title, we had a reminder of Charlie Pace, Charlie Hume was born and we saw Charles Widmore...twice. That's why it's that.

Great article!
I have to admit, I was a little thrown off by "Because You Left" and "The Lie". It took me a while, but I've come around. I think I was just missing the traditional "centric" episodes we've come to know and love... and then hate. (Seriously... did anyone care what Jack did in Singapore?)
Oh, and I agree with you that that baby is probably Miles. Why else would they make a point of showing the baby?
And it was awesome to see Ana Lucia again! Darlton has pleased her one and only fan :) And "Libby says hi" was absolutly heartbreaking!

Anyways, one word: Jughead.
Loooooooooved it!
To be honest, I wasn't too excited about this episode, but I was deffinatly proven wrong.
Daniel + Charlotte = almost half as good as Charlie and Claire. (I mean that in the best possible way.)
And Charles on the Island? Did not see that one coming!
And did anyone else notice that girl's name was "Ellie"? As in "Eloise"? As in Eloise the rat... as in Eloise Hawkings! No? Maybe I'm just grasping at straws...
And yes, Faraday completely owned Jughead. (Des was a close second.)
And Juliet speaking Latin! Cool 8)
And lastly, Desmond and Penny naming their kid Charlie... I nearly teared up! (Okay, so I did tear up... but only a little...)
(I'm ignoring the fact that Penny's father is named Charles... Charlie Hume is named after Charlie Pace! Wouldn't it be cool to see Charlie and Aaron play together? That would be weird! Hey! They could invite Ji Yeon and have a Baby Lostie party! ...okay, I'm off topic...)

Anyways, back to my main point: Great article!

LMAO!
The main shock for me was Charles getting onto the island, couldn't believe it! My brother said he saw it coming, but I don't think anyone did, lol.

Love the article!

This is a really good article. I'm so excited for the next episode! But Elly....could she be Eloise Hawkings? The only confusing part about that is that she seems to know him.
