Alrighty!! By popular request through my pick, I have managed to put together an excerpt of what my dream was regarding. As I was not very comfortable with writing about myself, I moved myself out of the story and was replaced by the character, Nicole (<--I love this name!!). I did attempt to put a small part of myself in her character, but as this is a small taste of the whole picture, there wasn’t much room for developing characters. So, let me know whether or not you like this little snippet and, if there are enough favorable responses, I will try to construct the back-story to go along with it. BTW, no pics in this one. Sorry!!

DISCLAIMER: My usual disclaimer, with some not so usual parts. I do not own the characters of Mac Taylor and Stella Bonasera (they are owned by CBS and various other individuals). HOWEVER, I do own the characters of Michael Adams, Nicole Smythe, Philip Desmond and Dante Antonio as they are a product of my very over-active imagination. They were not intended to be based on any actual people with the same names and are entirely coincidental if they are.

GENRE: Drama

RATING: PG for brief violence

The sky was dark and overcast when they descended from the roof. The clouds had been steadily covering the sky since before the dawn. It was evident that rain was only minutes, if not seconds, away. It was a nice reprieve from the unbearable heat that had swept the New York/New Jersey area for the last two weeks. Even as they left the airplane hangar, scattered raindrops were hitting the ground.
CSI Detective Mac Taylor, CSI Detective Stella Bonasera, FBI Agent Michael Adams and FBI Agent Nicole Smythe were walking towards the detachment of emergency vehicles waiting on the runway outside of the building. As they walked, they pulled off their bulletproof vests that had shielded them from the spray of bullets, deeming themselves out of immediate danger as all of the suspects had been subdued unto disarmament or death. Detectives Taylor and Bonasera were walking much faster then Agents Adams and Smythe, so Michael felt that now was the time to talk to Nicole about what had just transpired.
“What was he talking about ‘putting you in your place?’ What did he do to you?”
By this time the incoming storm had hit full force and the rainfall had accelerated to a rather steady downpour that could soak an individual within minutes. As thunder and lightning vied for control of the heavens, Nicole stopped walking and shrugged her shoulders. Looking at Michael, she responded, “I don’t really want to have this conversation here and now.”
“Not now?! He knew damn well that you were an undercover agent before we ever got on that roof today!” Michael was almost to the point of shouting, but he respected Nicole enough not to air these concerns loud enough for the other federal officers in the vicinity to hear, so his voice was only very strained and laced with anger as he moved to within a couple of feet of her. “You’ve been undercover in his ‘circles’ for eighteen months and the only information we ever got out of you was the information necessary to the investigation. We have no idea about what actually went on on a daily basis between you and him.” Michael sighed. “Nikki, I’m going to recommend that you speak to a therapist over the coming weeks when we get back to the office. I think it could really help you.”
Feeling really angry over how this whole thing went down and extremely exhausted due to the stress endured over the last few days, Nicole exasperatedly replied, “So, if I agree to these therapy sessions, will you put off the interrogation for a couple of –” Nicole suddenly stumbled forward and got cut off as an incredibly loud roll of thunder echoed overhead. Something was very wrong with that sound from the heavens. Michael glanced up at the sky wondering what had caused that odd sound mixed in with the thunder and then looked back down at Nicole.
How odd she looked just now. Her mouth was open and forming an “O” like she was thoroughly surprised by something and her eyes had a glassy look to them. He was about ready to ask her what the matter was when she started falling forward. He thrust out his arms to catch her as she fell and it was only then that he saw the red stain spreading over her back and felt the increased sticky wetness that only blood can give.
Everything slowed down in his eyes. For a few seconds, all he could see was the red stain getting larger before his eyes, especially as it was mingling with the rain that was still beating down. Then he shouted one word that could be heard by all those in the area. A word that immediately had everyone grabbing their firearms and slinging vests back on. “SNIPER!!”
As the EMTs hurried over to Nicole’s side, everyone else was scanning the various rooftops in the area and slowly spreading out to search the nearby buildings. Mac moved over to stand behind Michael and looked down at Nicole, who appeared very pale against the bright red of the puddle in which she was laying. As he turned his head up to survey the area, he saw the barest hint of movement on a rooftop about three hundred yards southeast from where they were standing. Grabbing his radio he gave the coordinates of the building as he started sprinting across the wet pavement towards the apparently empty warehouse where he saw the figure.
As he approached the entrance, he glanced over his shoulder to see if anyone else was approaching. To his relief he saw Stella and Michael coming up towards the entrance with another federal agent. Mac was mildly surprised at the look on Michael’s face, but considering the circumstances, he could understand the mixed look of fury and devastation. Michael had told him earlier that he considered his team his family and he was fiercely protective of them. This was after Mac had asked him about Nicole and how long she had been undercover. Michael had briefly touched on his insecurities with this whole case, especially as Nicole had been a fairly new agent when this case began. She had only been with the team for six months when she was called to this undercover assignment. Yes, Mac knew exactly how Michael felt. He considered his own team his family, also, and he would do anything within his power to protect them.
Turning back to the building, Mac waited for them to take up their positions and then he kicked open the door and shined his flashlight and gun inside and around the building. Nothing. All four of them filed silently inside and continued their perusal of the interior building, which was one vast room that was easily twenty thousand square feet. It was quite empty at the moment, with only five large crates stacked together in one corner. Mac almost immediately noticed a white metal ladder that scaled up one wall and ended at a trap-door at the top. Snapping his fingers, he got the attention of the other three and pointed towards the ladder and then up at the trap-door. Looking quickly around, they tried to locate another ladder so they could approach the suspect on two fronts. Luckily, Michael found another one hidden behind the stack of crates and he quickly climbed up so that he was situated at the top. Stella followed him up the ladder and the other agent, Agent Philip Desmond, quickly followed Mac up the first ladder. When they were stationed right under the trap doors, Michael and Mac slightly tested the doors and found that they were not locked or inhibited in any way, lock or otherwise. Quickly counting to three between them, they shoved the doors open and practically flew up the rest of the ladders and onto the roof followed by Philip and Stella.
There was nothing to greet them. No enraged sniper shooter, no hail of gunfire, nothing. After inspecting every inch of the roof and finding nothing to point towards the shooter, they finally descended the ladders to the interior and started looking around again. It was then, and only then, that Philip noticed another trap door, except this one was in the floor. He called the others over and they pulled the door up and open and gazed down into an entrance to what appeared to be a tunnel system.
They all dropped down into the tunnel and, using their flashlights, they looked around. The tunnel led off into two directions and they quickly dismissed one direction as twenty feet beyond the trap-door it was walled up. Seeking the other direction, they headed off to follow where it would lead. Mac halted them shortly after starting down the tunnel and he pointed to footprints that were clear as day in the thin layer of dust. After pointing out this observation, they continued on down the corridor.
After traveling in the flashlight-punctuated darkness for five minutes, Michael tapped on Mac’s shoulder signaling for him, and them all, to stop. That’s when they heard it; footsteps echoing down the tunnel from somewhere in front of them. Picking up the pace, they rushed deeper into the tunnel system and were forced to stop when they came to a large, deep chamber that had no less then ten different tunnel entrances that led off into varying directions. The sound of the footsteps was still heard in the distance, but with so many different tunnels to choose from, and the footsteps echoing through all of them, they realized that with only four of them, they could not hope to give chase.
Mac turned around to look at the rest of the group and said that they wouldn’t be getting anywhere by chasing blindly through the tunnel system. The best they could accomplish now was to let the CSI team sweep the area and gather the evidence they needed to find out who this sniper was.
Emerging from the tunnel system back into the warehouse and then out into the light-rain filled day, they discovered Nicole and one the ambulances gone. Getting the report from one of the EMTs who had stayed behind with another ambulance, they were informed that Nicole was not dead but in critical condition and was being taken to the hospital where she was to be treated for, not one, but two bullet wounds. Yes, while examining her, they had discovered that she had been shot less then twenty-four hours before, but someone had removed the bullet and also the corresponding GPS transmitter that had been surgically implanted in her body.
Satisfied that there was even a small chance that Nicole would survive, Mac and Stella got on their respective phones and put calls in to the rest of their team requesting their assistance at the scene. Michael got on the phone with his superior to give a brief report on the incidents of the day and to figure out where to go from there. Officially his case was closed as it only extended as far as Dante Antonio’s arrest and, as the last time Michael had seen him he had gone down in a hail of gunfire on the roof of the hangar, the case would be closed as soon as his report was filed. It appeared that he would be conducting a joint investigation with the CSI team, but that wasn’t new. Ever since he had had to speak with Detective Taylor regarding the FBI’s undercover assignment, they had continued this investigation jointly, each assisting the other. Normally, differing areas of the federal government involved in criminal investigations were loathe to help each other out, but, it appeared, very quickly, that both Detective Taylor and Agent Adams were deeply interested in keeping the undercover Agent Smythe alive.
After their phone calls were completed, Michael informed Mac and Stella that he was going to go to the hospital to check on Nicole’s status and that he would probably be there for some time until he could be quite sure of whether or not Nicole survived. Mac and Stella readily informed him that they would come by the hospital as soon as they could to check up on her as well.
After giving a few more orders to the rest of his team, Michael jumped in his car and headed off towards the hospital. As he pulled onto the road that would lead him back to Manhattan, he barely noticed that the rain had ceased to fall.
