Straight from Mamma Mia! - Meryl Streep's overalls
Genuine memorabilia with COA to be auctioned on eBay
Universal Studios has generously donated the overalls that the fabulous Meryl Streep wore for four months as Donna Sheridan in Mama Mia! to AnimfxNZ thanks to their mutual affiliation with the LA-based Visual Effects Society. These overalls will be put up for auction on eBay. Every penny raised in this auction is going towards AnimfxNZ, a conference that helps up and coming digital media artists become the next Weta Digital (the Oscar-winning studio behind the Lord of the Rings’ effects).
You can own the overalls Meryl Streep wore as she clambered up a goat shed, did the splits during the movie’s title track, and was photographed for the movie poster. Most wardrobe items are worn once and cast aside, but Meryl wore this pair almost continuously while shooting.
What are you wearing to celebrate Meryl Streep’s sixtieth birthday on June 22? The winning bidder will receive these overalls in time for Meryl’s big bash.
These overalls come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) signed by Universal Studios.
More on Meryl and Mamma Mia! - Meryl wanted to be in Mamma Mia! because of the sheer joy it brings through its music and depiction of women her age. Meryl wrote the only fan letter she’s ever written to the cast of Mamma Mia! the musical in appreciation of the exuberance they brought to New York in the dark period following September 11.
Meryl said Mamma Mia! granted “a freedom of expression that women of my age are not normally asked to portray” and a “musical, physical, and emotional opportunity to release everything in one character."
Critics have noted this freedom and the way it’s embodied by the overalls. One praised “the conviction that middle-aged women in overalls are the hottest thing going” and invited detractors to “kiss Meryl’s denim-clad a**”. Others commented on the pleasant surprise of seeing Meryl “one of the most lauded actresses of her generation, crawling around a room in overalls” and “prancing around in overalls with her hair flying in all directions”. Critics also said “not since Walter Brennan was a Real McCoy has a star gotten so much mileage out of a pair of overalls”, “those dungarees are the answer to a superhero’s costume”, and “denim blue is the new black”.
The frivolous and fun way Meryl wore the overalls helped Mamma Mia! clear $300 million across worldwide box offices and become the highest grossing film ever released in the UK (surpassing both Titanic and Harry Potter).
The auction will begin on Thursday, April 30 at 7pm Los Angeles time.
