Animation at the beginning
Enchanted is a 2007 Walt Disney pictures production and tells the story of a cartoon maiden who gets banished from her kingdom to modern day NY in human form where happy endings aren't there . Or is there???. Giselle ( Amy Adams ) arrives in NY scared and lost where she meets and falls in love with a cynical handsome divorce lawyer named Robert Phillip ( Patrick Dempsey) who helps her find her way home. Her prince, the chipmunk Pip and Nathanial all go to NY as well as the evil Narrisa . From the breathtaking camera movements at the beginning and the ball are magnificent and the all star cast is brillant too. Amy Adams & Patrick Dempsey were great as Giselle & Robert , James Marsden was hilarious as the dimwitted prince and Susan Sarandon was excellent as the evil queen Narrisa.

Enchanted also pays tribute to classic disney movies such as Beauty & the Beast, Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, & Cinderella. Think of it as Cinderella in Manhattan.

RECOMMENDATION: A good adult thriller. Amongst others, fans of thrillers will like this film, as will those who thought Dark City, Brazil, Total Recall and/or The Matrix had too much action and not enough sex.

CRITIQUE: This is a beautifully shot film about fear, loathing and revenge, with an ending that leaves you guessing. The characters' costumes change as the characters develop, a nice yet subtle visual touch. There's a great shot in the middle of the film as we see the protagonist typing madly into her laptop; the camera drifts slowly to one side and then just as slowly back across her face to the other side, generating tension in and calling attention to the background: the door to the bedroom behind her on one side, and the sumptuous bed on the other. Interpreting the meaning of that shot is key to your understanding of the film: this is a mostly subtle story, with the end open to interpretation as to what really happened. Charlotte Rampling is excellent as the author slowly driven mad by the carnal teenager invading her privacy, and Ludivine Sagnier plays the libertine with a slight vulnerability that spares her from becoming a...

Ray, viewed on DVD
As always, the review is a review of the film, and so contains spoilers.

Recommendation: A well-acted slice of life.

Critique: Ray is both really well executed and very poorly conceived: it has some brilliant performances, but the script is all over the map, and there is no ending at all. The soundtrack and cinematography are both quite good, and you really come to care about the characters. But the rhythm of the film is jerky and uneven, particularly towards the end. The film plays like a dramatized biography for the most part - the parts that succeed - but it also has trippy flashbacks and an unclear message. The message seems to be a reiteration of the American Dream: believe in yourself hard enough, and you can do anything, no matter what anybody says or does. But the message - whatever it is - is delivered slipshod with an absent ending: the ending of the picture is the sort of "Where are they now?" titles that you see as the credits rolls in films like Animal House.
