The tears silently streamed down Marjorie’s face. Her face was placid, but her eyes were filled with the most unbearable sadness known to anyone. She had lost hope, when she lost Lucy.
Lucy, who had never been anything but faithful and loving to her.
Now, she was dead. She had died, only with her two brothers, in a railway accident only a week before. It was the most tragic thing Marjorie had ever experienced. Lucy had taken all Marjorie’s hopes and joys with her.
Wherever she is now. Marjorie thought.
At the end of the funeral for the three Pevensies, Susan Pevensie, Lucy’s older sister gave her thanks to everyone. Susan was a beautiful girl, with dark hair and a perfect figure.
“Thank you for coming.” Susan told her, taking her hand. “I’m Susan Pevensie.”
Marjorie forced a smile. “I’m Marjorie Preston.”
“Thank you, Miss Preston.” Susan squeezed her hand and let go. “Are you a friend of Lucy’s?”
“Yes.” She whispered. “Lucy always was a jolly sight.”
Susan nodded slowly. She looked completely worn out.
Marjorie hugged her, and walked away. Again, tears slid down her cheeks, blurring her vision. But she didn’t care. She couldn’t feel anything but pain.
She sat down on a bench in the church garden. Memories flooded her.
She could almost hear the sound of children running around a schoolyard, as a little girl stood by herself. This girl looked pale and scared as she looked about the yard, being completely unsure of what to do. She turned and faced another little girl, her age, with a sunny smile on her face. The other girl had a look about her that made anyone feel safe and warm, and happy.
“Lucy?”
Marjorie instantly woke from her daydream, looking around wildly for Lucy, standing up with eyes wide with confusion.
“Lucy!” She cried out. “Oh, Lucy!”
Marjorie sobbed openly, for what seemed like hours, until she finally sat back down on the bench. Breathing hard, she closed her eyes and tried to calm down.
I must be seeing things. She told herself. It was all a dream. Yet, so real. Much more real than any dream I’ve ever had. Perhaps, even more real than life itself!
“Lucy.” She whispered. She could no longer cry, or scream, only whisper. “Why?” She asked softly. “Why did you leave? We were such good friends. There was so much I wanted to… to tell you.” She paused and bit her lip. “I wanted to tell you what a great friend you’ve been. You’ve always been there for me. You’ve been my support, and you’ve been my strength. You always made me smile. And… you always had a lovely story. Those stories you told me whenever I was sad, what were they? Oh.” She racked her brain thinking. “OH! Oh yes, it was those stories about Narnia. The wonderful place. My favorite story was that one about the four children and the witch… and the Lion.”
Marjorie paused again. She somehow felt stronger. The memories of Lucy telling stories about the magical land of Narnia made her feel as if Lucy were right beside her! But this time, instead of jumping up and screaming Lucy’s name, she stayed seated.
“Lucy, I shall never forget you.”
