This article is dedicated to the greatest… no… to the most awesome actor in the world.
I consider myself as one greatest Neil Patrick Harris fan. I’d now like to share the moment of the first encounter on my TV screen with Mr. Harris as well as my deepest thoughts on one great man.
It was back in 1995 when I started watching Doogie Howser, M.D. reruns. As a little girl of only ten years I began watching random episodes of the show. As I’ve been kind of a TV junkie, I watched pretty much everything which was on. From Monday to Thursday I couldn’t wait until 7.45 p.m., the time Doogie Howser was aired. One day I realized that I couldn’t get enough of the cutie who played a teenage doctor. I needed more information about this guy. …my very first crush. The Internet less developed than nowadays wasn’t help at all, and it seemed to me that nobody else in Germany knew this actor called Neil Patrick Harris. So I savored every minute of each episode, and I even started recording it on videotape. Watching the tapes over and over was the greatest thing in the world to me. A couple months later the last episodes of the show were flickering across my TV screen. Doogie Howser has never been on German television ever since. So the only thing left was having the show on tape. I continued to watch the tapes a few more months. However, time was passing by... I grew up, the feelings for my first crush have slowly been fading and replaced by ones for “real” boys.
Every now and then, I saw some of NPH’s movies The Christmas Wish, Not Our Son, Snowbound or Starship Troopers and Next Best Thing, to name only a few. Within this time I became an actual fan of Neil’s work. At the age of ten you can’t really look at an actor’s work critically, can you?
Later in 2003 I rediscovered being such a huge fan of Mr. Harris, by regularly watching reruns of the short-lived sitcom Stark Raving Mad. This show, by the way, was not only hilarious but also the birth of a suit-wearing Neil Patrick Harris, I believe : D By this time I had taped all the Doogie episodes over because I somehow needed the space for other stuff. So, I was a little upset, at least I wanted to reminisce the good old days.
Luckily for me the Internet has grown to a great source of information. I finally found out about all the stuff I always wanted to know, and much more. I was impressed by the amount of work NPH has done on Broadway by this time. Well, I can’t judge all of the plays he did, I bet he was awesome though. A couple of clips on YouTube never proved me wrong.
It was in January 2007 when I found out that Neil is gay. I read about it on the Internet several times before, but I never thought it was actually true. I have to admit, that I was quite “shocked”. It is kind of weird when you realize your first crush hypothetically never would have been interested in you after all. In spite of this oh-moment, I don’t give so much for someone’s sexual interests, as long as they’re happy.
Anyways, the more interviews I read, the more addicted I became to Neil because he seemed and still does seem to be such a great person. I don’t know what it is but I think it is the kind of his charm which makes a part of me believing that. Unfortunately, I haven’t met him in person (so I am only able to gather from all the articles and TV interviews) - but I really, really, wish I would meet him someday!
When I learned that NPH was going to be a part of that show How I Met Your Mother I was totally happy. Not only have I been happy to see him on TV again but I was also hoping he would finally be recognized as one great actor and not only being somehow reduced to his Doogie days. Don’t get me wrong, back then it was a pretty good show but having seen Neil in so many movies now, I think he is still way too underestimated. However, I am quite optimistic that this will not last too long and that he’ll be given the credit for his work he deserves.
So keep up the great work, Neil!
