When I heard about the Finer Things Club, I immediately knew that Oscar was going to be a member. I think Oscar had the best line in the episode with "Besides having sex with men, I would say the Finer Things Club is the gayest thing about me." The montage of club with their funny berets and Memoirs of a Geisha discussion was great too.

It's debatable whether Oscar didn't want Jim in the club. I can see why he wouldn't because Jim never takes anything seriously. I think Toby might have started the whole thing out his crush on Pam and recruited Oscar for his cause.

The look on Oscar's face when Andy grabbed the finger sandwich was priceless: "You did not just grab one of my finger sandwiches. Ooh, uh uh. Don't play."

The great thing about the club is that when the characters are talking about the text they are really talking about themselves. Pam talks about a character's struggle to choose from "passion and convention" while Oscar admires a character's "youthfulness, his freedom". Pam and Oscar also discuss the bravery of the author, a quality that is becoming increasingly important for both of the characters.

I really loved the build in the Finer Things scene with Phyllis. Every time Phyllis interrupted him with the microwave you could see his ire raise until he exploded: "What are you microwaving?!"

Again we get to see a certain fearlessness in Oscar that we haven't really seen since last season when he faced being out by Michael. Oscar was willing to dress up, discuss "dorky" things in public, and act "gay". Although some people initially thought Oscar was a coward for not coming out at work (they were later disproved by the deleted scene where Oscar explained that he tried to come out in his interview but Michael though it was a hilarious joke), Oscar has never been afraid to appear, to quote Michael, "f*ggy". He dressed up as a woman on Halloween and figure skated at Michael's birthday. Oscar appears to be fairly well-adjusted.

We saw more of stress ball Oscar tonight. Oscar Nunez does a great job contrasting relaxed, academic Oscar with uptight Oscar. His whole physical appearance changes drastically.

On Oscar's appearance, he sat up straight and held his tea cup properly when at Finer Things. He was more concerned about etiquette and manners than Pam (she held the cup with both hands like a mug) or Toby (he was slumping in his chair). We don't know much about Oscar's upbringing but he probably grew up with strict parents who enforced table manners.

I've started a Finer Things Club spot. I couldn't help myself. Join and we can read the books they read or just pretend to read them and where funny hats.
