Lately I have noticed a swell in the amount of inappropriate comments. Comments that have sexual innuendo, are hurtful, or are just plain gross, and most of the time they have nothing to do with the topic at hand. What I fail to grasp is why people feel like they need to do this. I can't understand why they can't control themselves and write something appropriate or nothing at all. Is it a lack of sense of humor? Do they not realize that people spend a lot of time contributing to this site and a comment like that can make all their efforts feel wasted? Or do they not understand that what they are saying is offensive or hurtful? Whatever the reason is, it is inappropriate and unacceptable. Now, just as a preface I am not talking about people expressing their opinion. I am all for expressing your opinion even if I do not agree with what you are saying. I am talking about things that are just inappropriate to say in a public forum. Most of the things I am trying to adress in this article are not appropriate to be said period. I have seen people as young as 9 on this site. That's right 9! Now I do believe that it is their parent's responsibility to monitor what they are doing on the internet, but I also believe that there is no reason they shouldn't be able to participate in website like this. There is no reason on a site like this that we need to be writing sexual comments about other people in a place where everyone and their dog can see it. If you feel that way about somebody an appropriate way to express that feeling is in private. Also, it is just plain hurtful to write comments or questions that point out a specific flaw that you see in a person. For example, “Don’t you hate when people do blah blah blah.“ When it is perfectly obvious who you are attacking. Something like this is better expressed in an email directly to the person you are talking about. Let’s just get this out of the way right here, right now (just as a warning I am writing specific examples so if you are one of the innocent children I am attempting to defend in this article please skip to where you see this *HERE*): it is not funny to write poop repeatedly, it is not cute to talk about putting butter on someone’s private parts(especially when the person you are talking about is like 15), it is not amusing to say that someone is ugly. It is hurtful and mean, and since I am not these things, that is as specific as I will get with my examples and I will not specific offenders. *HERE* I believe the people who are responsible for this know who they are and they have the choice to change their actions or not. Just know that when people like me see comments that are offensive sexually or otherwise, I don't think you are funny or cute. I think that you are very immature. I honestly take pity on you for your lack of self awareness and social skills. So if you can't say something nice (or appropriate)....SHUT UP!

(not trying to be mean for this, just a helpful tip, and this is for everyone that writes soapbox articles, try and put what you say into paragraphs to make reading easier.)
One of the things that I love about fanpop is that people is nice and try to demostrated that. So, I completly agree with you.
If you don't have something nice to say...well, don't say it!
