Cannon Vs Nikon ( and Sony etc) when dealing with SLRS?

When looking at SLRS is there necessarily a better brand when comparing Cannon vs Nikon or Sony?

I would say most professional photographers shoot with those two brands with very few using the Sony SLRs (but now that they own Minolta, that might change slightly although I still think Nikon and Canon will be the preferred brands).
