Ren and Stimpy, Just the name is iconic, but how did it all come to be? well a long long time ago a little nobody named John Kricfalusi would doodle, he'd doodle all kinds of things, one of them was a cat with a gigantic nose which was inspired by a 50's cartoon that was a throwback to 30's cartoons that always featured characters with huge noses. Another was an angry little chihuahua inspired by a postcard with a picture of a little angry looking dog wearing a sweater.

Now John loved the golden age of animation for many reasons but mainly one, the cartoonist control the cartoon. Since the late 60's cartoons wern't like that, in the 60's every cartoon featured sexy teenagers solving mystery's, playing rock music or often both. In the 80's nearly every cartoon was based on a toy, or trying to copy a show based on a toy, with rock music. But in the 90's nickelodeon had a radical new idea! Let the cartoonists decide the cartoon, let them run it. This is what John K was talking about! so he got in on this. Like he always does he presented a number of different characters, while coming up with them one of his friends suggested putting Ren and Stimpy together, and from there cartoon history was born.

Vanessa Coffey bought Ren and Stimpy, and she really did love it, she let John and his team have creative control and let them do gross episodes in exchange for some heart warming ones. After about two years Vanessa moved on to bigger and better things and someone else took over for the network. Now he LOVED Ren and Stimpy, he loved the ratings and the merchandising possibility's, unfortunately he didn't like the show so he booted John and his team of the project and put his own team to work. Obviously a little more complex then that, but you get the idea.

John was so upset, he worked 13 years for this, they were his characters and he wanted them back!! Thats when he got a great idea, not the whole team had been fired, if he could get the rest to walk out then they'd have to take him back. Now the most important one it seemed was Billy West. Billy was the voice of Stimpy, which was essentially was Larry of the three stooges, now you have to understand that Billy was the only voice actor in the industry at the time who could do Larry. If someone needed Larry they needed Billy, he did it for pinky and the Brain and would later go on to do Larry, moms son on Futurama. So John figured if they didn't have a Stimpy they didn't have a show. So Billy agreed to walk out.

Later billy decided that if he walked out he would get less money, but if he took over Johns job perhaps MORE MONEY!!!

After that the cat and dog were subjected to those embarrassing Games Animation episodes, the story's got lamer, the jokes weren't funny, Ren sounded awful, the characters personality was gone and the animation looked like every other show on TV, yet believe it or not, despite the substantial drop in ratings the show stayed on for another five years.

While that was happening John had made another show, which i admit watched all the time as a kid, the Ripping Friends. Don't remember it? neither does the rest of the world except Canadian kids who grew up watching Teletoon and there parents. Looking back it wasn't very good, but why didn't it work? the jokes were usially funny, the story lines were creative, so what the f? Well heres my problem NONE OF THE CHARACTERS ARE RELATABLE!! Look at R&S, two of the most relatable cartoon characters ever, especially Ren. Well why cant i relate to them. 1. outside dumb little personality traits they have no personality, and 2. not a single one is female, there are male characters a can relate to but generally not. Okay there's there mom, but she's boring and useless and there's Gene but she's totally derived of any character except being the smart one, and she's only in one episode.

After that John K didn't work on his own show for a few years, untill one day he got a call from Spike TV to do another R&S series, John was thrilled. He managed to get some of his old team back, but it was mostly newcomers fresh from school. This series also sucked. Why? well many reasons. Even though John did Ren again some Eric Bouze guy was now playing Stimpy. Also Ren ALWAYS looks off model, in nearly EVERY SHOT. Well lets talk about some of the episodes, the first one is called Onward and Upward. This is the one most people have seen. It's pretty gross, but apparently it's what the fans wanted so whatever, but my main problem with this one is that Ren and Stimpy actually have sex. Wow!! what just happened? I'm cool with gay rights and everything but making them flat out gay, like REALLY gay just totally ruins the characters. Alot of fans don's like the idea of them being gay at all, and the ones that do? Well they mostly liked the idea that it was a mystery. There were little hints, shall we call them? but nobody was ever sure, not even Ren and Stimpy themselves.

The next episode i wanna talk about is the one where they help the lady with the headless son. I actually like this episode, despite some tasteless gags, like the infamous "sawing gag" it was quite good and played out like a classic episode, for the most part anyways.

The last one i'm gonna talk about is called Stimpy's pregnant. Now before you say, "what the hell how can he be pregnant?" just listen. See now this episode had alot of potential. The idea of Stimpy thinking he's pregnant, him and Ren really wanting kid and then he turns out to be constipated could have been a great episode. But there are flaws, like thee gags are too gross, even for John K standards, also i don't need to be reminded of Ren and Stimpy's sex life the have now apparently. And finally the ending was just stupid and i don't think i laughed once throughout the entire thing. Also, Stimpy's fat guy man-boobs that swelled up because he's constipated? why do we have to see that? is it supposed to be hot??? IT"S NOT!!! one thing i did like though was the atmosphere of the hospital. You really felt like you were there, the dark empty building, it was just great.

Now John K luckily hasn't come to George Lucas Syndrome, because he eventually got it right with the George Liquor program AKA comic book. But unfortunately nobody wanted it, which is a shame because the characters were deep, interesting and relatable. And the one he did at comic con was awesome and highly entertaining.

so with that i ask this. Are R&S dead??? did adult party cartoon kill them, or did games? did games beat them to a pulp, and apc put them on life support?
