“Morning sunshine.” Mimi said cheerfully that next morning. Mark felt dazed as he walked into the kitchen, early on a Tuesday morning. The room was drafty and cold since they couldn’t afford heating. Soft snowflakes fell outside, covering the street in a thin layer of cold, muddy slush. Mark shivered as he fell onto the rough couch.
Mimi had started recovering quickly after him and Roger began to take care of her again. She’d been staying in their apartment until she could get back on her own two feet again… at least that’s what Roger said. Mark had a feeling she’d be staying for a while. Today she looked better than ever, even in her pajamas.
“What’s that smell?” Mark asked curiously, sniffing the air for the delicious aroma.
“Breakfast. Eggs and toast. You like ‘em scrambled?” Mimi smiled, holding up a raw egg and carefully cracking it onto the sizzling pan. Mark’s eyebrows rose in shock.
“I’m impressed. I didn’t know you could cook.” He laughed good-heartedly.
    “Roger taught me.”
“And who taught him?” Mark smirked. Mimi laughed as she broke another egg shell.
“Mmm, what smells so good?” Roger came in, his hair slightly ruffled from just waking up. There was a subtle contentment about him this morning.
    “Breakfast.” Mimi smiled.
“Yum.” Roger sat down next to Mark, rubbing his hands together.
“I figured I might as well whip something up for Mark’s big day.” Mimi teased, tossing two eggs onto a plate and walking over to the couch. She set the food on his lap, her hands on her hips expectantly.
    “My big day?” Mark asked.
“Roger told me about you running into Pam yesterday.” She leaned down, kissing Roger’s forehead then falling onto his lap.
“Thanks a lot.” Mark muttered, glaring at Roger. He shrugged back.
“It’s not really a big deal. It’s just two friends getting some coffee.”
“Sure it is.” Mimi said sarcastically.
“Hey, it’s almost 12. You should get ready for your date.” Mark said.
Mark shook his head, not bothering to reply. He stood up and left the room, his eyebrows furrowed in thought.
    Here we go.
