It's a terrible thought, I know, but I can't help but think that Mimi should have died.
She was so sick and she wasn't able to see a doctor, and yet...she woke up totally fine?
okay, I guess I can live with that.
BUT
Roger sings "thank God this moment's not the last", right?
They were literally given "Another Day" !
It's like Mimi was wrong and Roger was right, it wasn't "no day but today", there was another day!
am i making sense?
probably not.
just wondering what everyone else thought.
should Mimi have died?
No, I totally understand what you're saying. Also, it's based on the opera "La Boheme" and Mimi dies in that - its the huge tragedy of the story. Having Mimi live makes it seem way too "Hollywood-ized" for me. Not every story has to have a happy ending, cuz that's not how life works.
The thing is... she did kinda die. I know she didn't, but, you know when it really seems like someones about to give up and its like there's no hope and they pull every ounce of strength together to hold on for as long as they can? She's too weak to stay alive for much longer but at least she can say goodbye to everyone and have her last few days with the people she loves. Thats what most people wish for when they're coming to the end... I'm not making much sense either but its difficult to put into words... sorry.
no, i completly understand you, epic-LoVe.
and you're totally right.
but i still think it defeats the purpose of the whole "no day but today" message.
maybe im being harsh here, but it have to agree with tessajanuary.
it seems a very "hollywood" ending, and the rest of the movie was SO completly the opposite.
for mimi and roger, there's no day but today...except for tomorrow.
i know what u guys are saying but the thing is she died and then angel told her to go back. it's a great story line. and show some respect to jonathan larson. he would've loved to see how far rent got. it's amazing. may he rest in peace.
someone told me that janathan larson died one day before rent had its first showing. oh yeah, it was lindsey (lindseyiscool). she must have told me at school.
Yeah, he did. I was watching the video on fanpop about the movie, behind the scenes or whatever and they had a thing about how he would be really proud or whatever.
I thought it was great that mimi didn't die. But the way they made it happen was unrealistic. I think it should have been she's dieing and then it cuts to colins at angels grave several years later but you think it's mimi's. Then Mark, Joanne, Roger, and Maureen join him one by one to sing Finale B. Then you see Mimi walk up to roger and tell him how she saw angel when she was about to die. Then the whole group hugs and they all finish with no day but today!
Zach's reply makes sense, but I would've liked to see Mimi die in the end. Sure it would be devastating, but hey, this is New York people. You don't get a break here.
I too think that Mimi should have died and I very much agree that the film made her 'resurrection' way unrealistic. Uh, I guess I don't have anything more insightful than that.
I always had the sneaking suspicion that she died shortly after Finale B. Maybe that's just me, though. Still, realistically, yes, she would have died. But this is a musical where magical things happen!
I also had a feeling that Larson wrote Mimi's death and decided it was a too depressing way to end the play so rewrote it. Because it really does play like that if you think about it.

i dunno, maybe im think too hard :S
and dont get me wrong, im a complete renthead :P
but like tessajanuary said, in "la boheme" mimi died.
anyways, i get that jognathon larson wanted a happy ending.

Rent is about joy and living life, and I think the message would have been totally different if Mimi had died.
