I tried that, but the only thing I've done is some DivX thing that I downloaded. Do I have to do that sort of stuff, or is there a way to just watch it somewhere on the internet, without any download and insalling drama?

you dont have to download anything. Just go to sidereel, search for smallville, it will take you to a sort of smallville homepage where it will show drop down lists of each season and each episode, if you click on season 1 for e.g, it will drop down a list of all episodes, click on pilot and it will show a link "search for season 1 episode1 (13 results)" so each episode link takes you to a page where there are links to hosting sites, dont ever choose the itunes, or divx ones, try any of the other links, you usually have to select the megavideo or flash video links, sometimes it only shows a certain number of links and you have to select the option "view all links" keep trying each link until you find a video that works and is free. remember, each link will take you to another website where you will find the video for the episode.
