Chapter 9: Some Things are Better Left Unsaid

Lois woke to the busy commotion in the hospital corridor. She couldn’t wait to get home and sleep in as late as she wanted without any disturbances, on a nice comfy bed, preferably next to Clark. That was the dream, the one thing it took her forever to admit even to herself. She slowly opened her eyes to see Clark lying beside her fast asleep. He looked so calm and peaceful it was nice to see him not worrying about anything. She didn’t want to wake him. He’s been through so much lately. She knew he had spent every waking hour over the past week or so here just sitting with her, he could use some rest. As she lay awake, alone with her thoughts, she got to thinking. She thought about potential baby names, what it would be like living at the Kent farm, and the big question she’s been wondering about…whether or not he’s thought about marriage. With the baby on the way and her moving in, was it a possibility? Don’t get your hopes up Lois! She told herself. They were still quite young; she doubted the thought ever crossed his mind. She always felt like she wasn’t good enough fro Clark, with all her other boyfriends she had always felt they weren’t good enough and she knew she was holding out for someone more…special. And then there was Clark, and she felt so unworthy. He was so sweet and caring and know finding out about his hero complex…he had a greater destiny then hers and she wasn’t sure she was great enough to be part of it. She tried to shake that feeling and just enjoy the way things were now, don’t dwell on the possibilities and what ifs! She kept reminding herself. She was getting pretty annoyed with feeling like this, she just wanted it to stop to be reassured she was wrong but she couldn’t bring herself to confront Clark about it. He might take it the wrong way and start to regret having told her because it made her feel undeserving of him. She didn’t want that, not for a second.

Clark could feel the intensity of her stare pulling him out of his dreams. There was something about those hazel eyes of hers. He could always tell when they were fixated on him, he could feel it. Right at that moment his life was perfect, and he just wanted to lie there and enjoy it. He didn’t move; he just stayed still with his eyes closed and smiled.

Lois saw the smile come across his lips and couldn’t help but do the same, how was he so damn irresistible? But then she started to wonder what he was smiling about. Was he still dreaming? Did he have a mind reading power he forgot to mention? Was she thinking out loud? She hoped so much that it was the first one and that his smile wasn’t for him enjoying her thoughts and insecurities, some things are better left unsaid.

When he opened his eyes he saw the worried look that was cast over her face turn to a warm smile.

“Good morning sleepy head.” She whispered.

“Good morning Lois. How long have you been up?” he asked as he gently kissed the tip of her nose.

“Not too long, I’ve just been lying here…thinking.”

“Thinking about what?” he questioned.

“Nothing interesting.” She said trying to make him believe such; she couldn’t possibly have him inquiring about all her thoughts. Well at least she knew that wasn’t the reason for his smile.

“Try me.” He insisted.

“No really it’s nothing Clark just forget about it okay?” She pleaded.

“Okay I won’t ask!” he raised his hands to show his backing off. “Now how about we get out of here? You are free to leave aren’t you?” he asked excitedly.

“Yes! I’m so happy to be going home I can’t wait to leave this place it’s so…depressing.” She shuddered. “I think we just have to check in with the nurse first.”

"Okay Lo, you wait here and I’ll go deal with all the papers and bills and talk with the nurse.” He got out of bed and walked around to her side before leaving.” Are you okay to get dressed by yourself or do you need my help?” he gently rested his palm against her shoulder.

“Oh you wish Smallville.” She smirked as she slowly sat herself up. “I think I'm strong enough to get dressed by myself. “

“A guy could always dream.” He teased and walked out of the room. She sighed and leaned against the back of the bed. Why did she always do that? She knew she would’ve enjoyed Clark helping her dress. She loved watching him when she was showing skin, she could see his dirty mind at work as he’d gaze over every inch of her body. And the feeling of his hands touch her bare skin made her weak. With just one touch he could make her – “Snap out of it Lois!” she groaned to herself. “Enough with the dirty thoughts!” She grudgingly got out of bed and began to put on the clothes Clark had brought her earlier. She went really slowly not only because of how weak she felt but because she was hoping, as pathetic as it was, that Clark would come back in the midst and help her. But to her dismay, she ended up getting dressed all by herself after all.

------

They walked up the front steps of the Kent farm; Clark holding Lois' hand the whole way to make sure she was alright. When they walked through the door they were surrounded by the warm smell of fresh baked cookies.

“Clark is that you?” called Martha as she rushed in from the other room. “Oh it’s so good to see you both!” She wrapped her arms around Clark holding him close, and then did the same to Lois. “Lois dear are you alright? I heard what happened and I came down as soon as I could!” she placed her hands on Lois forearms and gave her a worried look.

“Yes Mrs. Kent I'm fine thank you.” She reassured her. “You really didn’t have to come all the way down here for me.” She smiled at Martha who was like a mother to Lois. It meant a lot to her that she cared so much.

“Oh I'm glad! When Clark called to tell me what happened I was so worried! And I just couldn’t get out of the office in time to visit you in the hospital. I thought the least I could do was have some homemade cookies ready for you to come home to!” she grabbed a plate and offered it to them. Clark took one, only to lose it to Lois in a blink. His heart was so at peace and filled with love that moment and all he could wish for was the clock to stand still forever.

“They’re delicious!” Lois exclaimed as she took a bite out of the cookie.

“They are!” Clark agreed. “But you really didn’t have to go to all the trouble of coming down here mom, Lois and I would have been fine on our own.”

“Clark don’t be ridiculous!” she shook her head.

“He’s right Mrs. Kent.” Lois said.

“Lois you know how much you mean to me! You’re like a daughter to me and you could only imagine my fear when I found out. I only wish I would’ve been here sooner I really do.” She spoke with a voice full of genuineness and truth. The two things she always stands for.

“Thank you,” Lois smiled as a tear rolled down her cheek. “for caring so much.”

“Oh Lois!” a tear rolled down Martha’s face as well as she pulled Lois into her arms for another hug.

Clark watched the two most important women in his life embracing each other. The two women who meant the world to him and despite his resistant a tear formed in the corners of his eye, unable to control his happiness.

“Please stay here tonight Lois, I wouldn’t sleep well unless I knew you were perfectly fine.” Martha told her, and you could tell she really meant it.

“Clark didn’t tell you?” Lois asked.

“Tell me about what?” her eyes became wide with curiosity.

“Lois and I are moving in together.” Clark said proudly as his fingers intertwined with Lois’.

“Oh that’s great! I’m so happy for the two of you!” She brought them both into a big hug. “It will be so nice having you back in the house again, but even though you are mature adults in a relationship you still have to keep the showers separate…at least while I’m home.” She laughed. Clark’s hand quickly slipped out of Lois’.

“Mom!” Clark moaned and his cheeks turned red. He didn’t want to be talking about this with his mother; it was painful enough the first time!

“Don’t worry Mrs. Kent, we know better now. Don’t we Clark?” she smirked finding this too funny. Clark sent her a joking glare.

“You must be starving! Hospital food isn’t all that appetizing now is it? Why don’t you guys go get all cleaned up and I’ll prepare a nice lunch we have to celebrate!” she said excitedly as she shooed them out of the kitchen.

“Would you like some help?” Lois asked.

“No, no don’t worry about it go ahead and relax you have to take it easy.” She replied kindly.

“Thank you, we really do appreciate it.” Clark told his mom. He took Lois hand and led her upstairs.
Once they got to Clark’s room Lois went and sat on his bed. Clark watched a smile come across Lois’ face as she looked around the room.

“What’s up Lois?” he asked.

“It’s just nice to be back…on the farm I mean. It’s been the only place that’s ever really felt like home.” She said. Clark went to sit next to her and put his arm around her; pulling her in to rest her head on his shoulder.

“I'm glad.” He told her. “This is your home, our home.”

“When are we going to tell her?” she asked, looking up at him.

“About the baby?” he asked.

“Yeah. I’m a little nervous about it.” She admitted, leaning her head back against his shoulder.

“Don’t be. Common Lo, she adores you.” He reassured her.

“Before she knew I was caring her grandchild.” She whispered; her hand gripped Clark’s tightly.

“That won’t change anything.”

“But what if it does? How do you know? We’re still young Clark, what if she thinks we’re not old enough to do this? And what If she doesn’t want me carrying her grandchild?” she choked back her tears, she didn’t like Clark seeing her like this, so insecure.

“Lois, look at me.” He placed his hand on her cheek pulling her gaze towards his. “Everything is going to be okay, don’t worry about it. She won’t love you any less, I know her. She loves you so much.” His eyebrows furrowed and he gave her those puppy dog eyes she’d been longing to see again, they always made her feel better. She slowly nodded hoping all he was saying was true.

“So when should we tell her?” she asked.

“I was thinking today, but if it’s too soon for you I understand. I just think the sooner we tell her, the better you’ll feel.” He said with an understanding tone.

“You’re right, I will.” She took a deep breath. “What do you say? Should we go tell her?”

“Let’s go.” He nodded and placed a supportive hand on her thigh.

When they made it back downstairs they found Martha working hard in the kitchen. They both slowly walked over; Lois’ hand tightly squeezing Clark’s.

“Need any help?” Lois grinned. “I insist.”

“Well if you must, would you two mind setting the table?” she asked.

“Not at all, we’d love to!” Lois said as they walked over and started grabbing plates and utensils. While they were setting them down on the table the doorbell rang. “I’ll get it!” said Lois as she walked over to the door. She pulled opened the door to reveal a familiar face.

“What are you doing here?” she asked nervously.
