They play off of eachother so well and with the death of Joyce, Dawn fills that role nicely - allowing there to be a character pro-Spike in the group. Just watching Spike care for Dawn and edit himself for her security and well-being is wonderful. It's another layer to both of our characters.
One of the best scenes for me in season six (and it's sort of two scenes) is Spike finding Dawn at home, coming in and begining to yell at her for running and Buffy comes down the stairs. Pushing the shipping aside, the way Spike can just let loose with the vacant threats is wonderful strictly because it's in her own good. All the scenes involving Key discussions is also a topper.
