As we all look back in seasons 6 and 7. Buffy was in a lot of pain with Spike. She had relationship with Spike that was so addictive. Buffy was weak in season 6. As she finally realizes that. Buffy needs to be the strongest slayer and sister for Dawn . She gave up her addictive relationship with Spike. To be there for Dawn.
Now, we all know that Buffy was dating Spike just to feel and using him. Then she wants stop it. Its harder for her every night. Can't stop thinking about Spike. It hurts her the way she treats him and the way he treats her.
In Older and Far Away, Dawn was telling Buffy how much it was hurting not seeing her sister. When Buffy was realizing how much she hurted Dawn. She knows in heart to forget about Spike and move on.
In the epsiode "As You Were" towards the end of the epsiode Buffy was telling Spike about the way she was treating him and how she was using him.
"As You Were"
Buffy: I used you and treated you wrong. And I am sorry I want to be here with you. But Things are easier with you. But I want to stop to be there for Dawn.
Spike: So this goodbye.
Buffy: I'm sorry William we have to move on.

From that moment Buffy was feeling for Spike and so has Spike. She felt really bad the way she treated him. Spike still loves Buffy and wants to make the numming from her to stop. He wanted her back from force by raping her to win her back. That didn't satisfy her and she stop him. Spike left her and went to get a soul just for her.
In season 7, Buffy met a vampire his name was Holland Webster that she knew from High school. She told him everything about her relationship with Spike. She said that she felt she was punishing herself with Spike. As Buffy was talking to him he said that she wasn't punishing herself. She was lost in her own dump life from being dead that she thought she was heaven and she was happy.
Overall, Buffy and Spike's relationship in season 6 was a huge mistake for the both them. They understand that, Spike's feelings for Buffy hasn't change and Buffy does have feelings for him. In season 7 Buffy and Spike were understand there feelings for each other. Spike knew what he did to Buffy was wrong. So has Buffy, Spike still wants Buffy to forgive him. She has and her feelings for Spike was strong. Buffy was understanding what kind a man Spike was becoming .
