Part One.
Part Two.

The purpose of this article is to get out my opinions to those who have played Brawl, and to make those who haven't salivate with anticipation.

Okay, so I've been doing a lot of Brawling for the past three days. So far I've unlocked Marth, Ness, Snake, Luigi, Falco, Captain Falcon, and Lucario. This section is just for my first impressions:

First Impressions
Characters
The first character I played as was Link. He's very good as usual.
Mario's F. L. U. D. D.
Mario's F. L. U. D. D.
Mario has a change that I don't like. Instead of his Mario tornado for the down special move he has his F. L. U. D. D. from Super Mario Sunshine. This move is confusing and pointless. It does no damage and was designed to push opponents of the stage with it's water. It doesn't work very well.
Pit is my favorite newcomer. He's like Link with wings. One word to describe him: unstoppable. First of all he can flap his wings several times which can bring him back to the stage to nearly any point. If that's not enough, he can glide extremely far. And if by some crazy aligning-of-the-planets that causes you to need it, his up special move can carry you another very long distance.
Wario has weak attacks, but he makes funny noises and his Final Smash is so bad that it's funny, so I don't really mind how terrible it is.
Ike is my least favorite newcomer (yes, even worse that Lucas). Maybe it's just me (like I said, I've only had it for three days) but he is really slow-moving.
Pokemon Trainer is hard to get used to at first, but once you do, people better watch out.
When I first heard Diddy Kong was going to be in Brawl, I thought that he would be a weak character that makes funny faces good for a few laughs. Don't underestimate Diddy Kong.
I'm almost afraid to say this, but... I don't mind Ness this time around... heck, I actually like him. He really reminds me of N64 Ness and not so much of Melee Ness. He's much floatier.

Controller Selection
The first controller I used was the horizontal Wii-Mote. It's good, but I wouldn't recommend it, if you're used to the Gamecube Controller with it's many buttons.
The controller for me
The controller for me
Next I tried the Classic Controller. It's very nice, if you picked up gaming around the N64 era.
If you've played Melee, you know what the GameCube controller is like.
Finally, I found the controller of my dreams - the Wii-Mote Nunchuk. This one's not as simple as the Wii-Mote and not as complex as the Classic and Gamecube controllers. Perfect.
But definitely try out them all, and find the one for you.

Final Smashes
Keep in mind, as I'm writing this section, I've only had the game three days, so I don't know everything.
The Good Final Smashes
Mario's, Link's, Diddy Kong's, Samus's, Fox's, Falco's, Pit's, and Pokemon Trainer's Final Smashes are all very good.
Giga Bowser = the most fun I've had playing Brawl yet. But be careful how you make your custom stages. I've seen Giga Bowser's power go to waste because it got stuck in some small crevice or low ceiling.
Huh?
Huh?
The Bad Final Smashes
Yoshi's Final Smash is definitely the worst. He flies around very slowly and if you just stay directly behind him, you won't get hurt. He turns around very slowly so don't worry about that. There's no room for slow characters in the world of Smash Bros.
Meta Knight's Final Smash has the potential of being good, but you'll be lucky if that happens.
Lucas and Ness's Final Smashes are terrible. Down-right terrible. Very easy to avoid. The "falling stars" come down slowly and only one comes down in a given spot, so if you see one come down, stand there. There probably won't be another.
King Dedede also has a really bad Final Smash. It's basically his standard special move times ten.
The Final Smashes That Confuse Me
Just one in this category: Luigi. I've seen this Final Smash performed many times. I've performed it myself many times. I've reread the Dojo article on it several dozen times, but I still can't seem to grasp what the heck is going on.

Items
Dragoon: The Dragoon appears in three pieces one at a time. It's really fun at first, but it appears in nearly every match I play. I've played about 100 matches at this point, and it's become a bit of a bother. It seems the entire focus of the match goes to getting the Dragoon to get one measly K. O.
Smart Bomb: The Smart Bomb is really fun, even if you do get caught in the explosion. What's really fun is if you have several Smart Bombs sitting next to each other and they set each other off.
Assist Trophies: Mr. Resetti is one. A big speech bubble appears over him and he starts complaining. Seems pretty funny right? Wrong. It is extremely irritating. (Same with Nintendogs.) When you're trying to Brawl you don't want something blocking your view.
But not all Assist Trophies are bad. Andross, Lakitu, Jeff, Hammer Bro, Stafy, and Waluigi are all good.

Day 6
I am writing this section three days after the previous part. I now have a bit more insight into the game and I've unlocked more characters (Sonic, R. O. B., Mr. Game & Watch, and Ganondorf). I've gotten further in the Subspace Emissary, and I've played several online matches.

Characters
Sonic: He has replaced Pit as my favorite newcomer. He's fast and out of control, and that's exactly how Smash Bros. was meant to be played.
The Blue Blur
The Blue Blur
R. O. B.: He (it?) is also very good. His major downside is his laser beam which runs out of juice if you use it more than once in a row, but he makes up for this fault with his great aerial down special which he uses to smack unsuspecting opponents with his base.
Mr. Game & Watch: As I'm writing this, Mr. Game & Watch is tied for first (with Jigglypuff) for the title of Worst Character in Smash Bros. History. I can't understand this, because I think Mr. Game & Watch is the most well-rounded character in the game.
Ganondorf: Ganondorf is just a slow version of Captain Falcon. What else can I say?
Ike: Upon closer inspection Ike isn't nearly as bad as I said several days ago. He's actually quite good. I just had to play with him a few more times to get used to him.
Ness: I've played as Ness several times. It's like remembering back to the N64 days when I used to be really good with Ness.

Online Battling
I got over my fear of failure and decided to play an online match. I chose Sonic. I practiced for several minutes (See picture), and then finally the match started.
Much to my surprise and utter glee, I won the match. So, I decided to play some more matches. I won a few more and then lost several, but it was fun.
I spectated one online match. I bet 80 coins on Pikachu (I just had a feeling), but Pikachu lost. Meta Knight lingered at the side, staying out of the action the whole time. Then when it came to Sudden Death, he swooped in and creamed the lot of them. Lousy cheater... cost me 80 coins.

The Subspace Emissary
Great fun. It forces you to play as every character; it's how I realized that even though Lucas is terrible, Ness isn't nearly as bad as him. (They're actually fairly different, if you look at the details.)

Final Review
Day 7: I still haven't unlocked Wolf, Jigglypuff, and Toon Link, but I'm confident that I have enough information to give this game a review. (It should be noted that the "Overall Review" is not an average of the above reviews but instead a stand-alone.)

Subspace Emissary: 9/10. It's very fun, but also very repetitive, but that's the problem with nearly every side-scroller. The Subspace Emissary is the second best side-scroller I've ever played (after Super Mario Bros. 3).

Stage Builder: 10/10. This is fantastic. At first, when I got the game, I was so overcome with excitement that all the Stage Builder ideas were clogged in my mind, but now they're really coming to me. I have 16 extra stages now (including a crude Stage Builder version of the Fanpop logo).

Classic Mode: 9.5/10. This time around Classic Mode is much better than either of the previous games, due in part to the massive amount of new characters to liter the playing field with cool moves and awesome abilities. Still, after playing it with 20 different characters, it gets a bit old.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection: 8/10. The lag is terrible, but it's getting better. I once played a match that was so slow it took thirty seconds for the "3-2-1" countdown. But, as I said, it's getting better and, therefore, more fun.

Stages: 10/10. Much better stages this go-around. If you want a plain platform stage with no crazy stuff going on, you can have that. If you want some wild, seizure-inducing stage, you can have that too.

The starting line-up.
The starting line-up.
Characters: 10/10. Best. Character selection. Ever. Sonic and Snake do not let you down. If you liked the Metal Gear series and hated the Smash Bros. series, you'll probably like Brawl. If you love Pikmin and hate Smash Bros., you'd probably like Brawl, too.

Overall Review: 10/10. There's simply no other way to say it: this is the best video game of all time.

Thanks for reading.

I haven't had too much trouble with lag playing with "Friends Only" but the random online matches are bad sometimes.

And yes, Jigglypuff is pretty lacking except for things like "Cruel Brawl" and "15 minute Brawl"

Toon link is pretty much.. minature link. Wolf is actually pretty different from Fox

My favorite character at the moment is Zero Suit Samus I thin k :)

Fantastic article! I shall say more after brushing my teeth.

Is there any difference between Fox's and Falco's Final Smashes?

I always felt that Ganondorf was far easier to control than Captain Falcon (who I truly hate).

You like R.O.B.? Traitor.....

What is it like when you set the items on "assist trophies only, high frequency"?

Bah, why do I have to be so negative and hole-picking....

Still, can't wait to use the Stage Builder.

Nice article. You're right, Pit is unstoppable. Much like Kirby, he's not someone that you want to end up playing against. Ike is a good fit for me.

I haven't noticed a difference between Fox's and Falco's Final Smashes but there might be some little difference.

Assist Trophies high frequency is not as fun as you'd think. When I did it, they didn't come as frequently as I wanted. Other items come very much, but something about Assist Trophies... ?
