Was The Crypt Keeper... REAL???

Just curious. Was The Crypt Keeper real? Before they made the show did they get an idea from a real human being? Somewhere between 1900s and 1950s? I mean, how can you come up with such a charactor as The Crypt Keeper without really copying an actual human?
But anyway, I love his personality. I'm not really sure if he killed people and put them in his CRYPT!
