As I was uploading some teen movie pictures for the spot, I came across the movie
The Virgin Suicides, stopped in my tracks and thought "Is this a teen movie?". Yes, it's about teenagers. And it was marketed towards teenagers. And yet, to me, I have always associated 'teen movie' with the comedy genre. There are indeed teen movies that are dramatic, but they tend to be B-list dramatic movies that you watch late at night and giggle at (see
The Craft).
So what does anyone else think? Do you equate teen movies primarily with comedy or do you think ALL movies about teens as 'teen movies'? Another movie that puts me in a quandry:
Thirteen.
I do think of comedies when I hear that term, however.
There's probably a good definition of the teen movie as a genre out there somewhere, but I think most people intuit it, much like the question "What is art?" Sure, this wide a definition leaves it open to weird fringe stuff, but I think they could intuitively reject some content as not fitting the category, much like people can tell that The Tin Drum is not a kid's movie, even though it's about a young boy.
Then again, there were unsupervised 8-year-olds watching Pan's Labyrinth in the cinema recently, so maybe all bets are off on people using their own judgement...
