The GGL: a recent project by fans
The internet fandom for The Pretender remains alive though it is now 12 years (almost to the date) since the premiere of The Pretender on NBC in September, 1996. Ratings issues aside, this one hour drama (with a pilot that rated higher than ER among test audiences) became a fan favourite after it premiered. It drew a cult following for its fascinating hero, Jarod (Michael T. Weiss), equally fascinating villains and the ambiguous characters that fell somewhere between hero and villain depending on the episode. Miss Parker became a heroine in her own right, and Andrea Parker's portrayal of this strong female character became a new model for contemporary female roles on TV.

Fans hailed the show as riveting drama and not just good wholesome entertainment. They launched a dramatic email campaign when the show was cancelled by NBC in 2000 at the end of the fourth season. The thousands of emails that NBC received made them rethink their decision but the best they could offer the show's creators was one TV movie to wrap up the story. The saying goes that TNT offered two with the option for two more, and the rest is The Pretender TV movie history.

The Pretender 2001 and The Pretender Island of The Haunted premiered in 2001, and since then fans have been left hanging again. Why was there no immediate and dramatic response to the lack of further movies then? This could be attributed to the state of mind of fans after the events of September 2001, (which many believe hurt the ratings of the second movie), as well as the fact that TNT continued to show reruns of the series which may have placated many fans and lulled them into a false sense of security.

In 2007, the creators (Steven Long Mitchell and Craig W. Van Sickle) once again fanned the flame of hope, acknowledging publicly that they know the fans "clabber" for more and promising something digital very "soon" through the production company "Strange Highways" however 2008 is almost over and nothing has been forthcoming since. Will the fans cease to clamour? Perhaps the emails have dwindled but evidence on the Fox Pretender Forum, and the FrustratedTpFans campaign (for closure) group and other fansites indicates there is no waning of the passion these fans have for the show and their continued hope for closure or a continuation of their beloved series. Some want to see Jarod and Miss Parker finally hook up, and others just want to see The Centre brought down by Jarod and a reunion with Jarod and his family. Many fans have developed additional fanaticisms for other/new shows but they all remember and still love The Pretender, and in their words "still want more."
