Why is it necessary to turn off all electronic devices during take-offs and landings?

I understand the prohibition of wireless and radio technology on board, but how exactly does a CD player or an iPod interfere with the pilot's ability to fly the plane and/or communicate with ground control?

What? I don't understand what that means. It's not like it's static or anything... Could you explain that a little better?
