Bella searching for "their" meadow
|
This is sort of an informal rant/observation.
We all know that New Moon is about tragedy and the loss of love and the aftermath. Edward left Bella. But why did he leave her?
Since New Moon is being adapted into a feature length film, I've been seeing alot of questions and accusations reguarding Edward's absense.
Examples:
- Jacob's better than Edward because he didn't leave Bella!
- Why would Edward leave Bella if he loved her?
- Edward's scum. When you love someone, you don't just abandon them and leave them to die!
Despite the fact that I'm Team Edward, I find these accusations to be unjustified.
FIRST, Edward left Bella because he loved her. In Eclipse, he explained to Jacob in Chapter 22 that it was the hardest decision he had to make in his 100+ years.
"Jacob, from the second that I realized that I loved her, I knew there were only four possibilities."
Re-read that part. You can feel Edward's pain speaking to you through the pages. He left because he loved her and he didn't want to risk hurting her because of what he is. Chapter 22: Fire and Ice tells why Edward left and why he made the decision. He made a mistake by trying to force Bella into the second option and it nearly killed them both.
SECOND, for those who are saying Jacob never left Bella. Yeah, um, he did.
"Go home, Bella. I can't hang out with you anymore."
Jacob left Bella too. But also to protect her. If you blame Edward, then you have to blame Jacob too, because he left Bella for the similar motive of Bella's safety.
Edward had done something way before Jacob ever did, and that was letting Bella decide. While Jacob was going on and on about how he would have been better for Bella, Edward stepped aside and let Bella make her decision. Jacob, however, emotionally blackmailed and mouthraped her in Eclipse. I'm not accusing people of liking Jacob, but I'm frustrated with those who fail to realize Jacob left Bella, just like Edward did, and those who are reluctant to accept the fact that Edward did the things he did to protect her.
New Moon is about Bella and Edward's seperation, how they dealt with the loss of love, and the consequences. Every event in New Moon was how Bella dealt with the seperation. Each thought, each action was linked to Edward in some way. The danger was to hear Edward. Hanging out with Jacob was to pass the time. Getting lost in the woods was to find their meadow.
I end this rant/observation with the question, why must those who hate Edward accuse him of leaving Bella for selfish reasons? Were they not both hurt by the seperation? Were they not both dying without each other? and were their lives not black nights, no fire, no brilliancy, no reason for anything?
Thank you for taking to time to read my article. If you'd like, please comment :) I'd love to see your views and your perspective :)

darkfall for that lovely comment
even though i agree entierly with everything you said, i just want to show both sides of the argument and say even though Edward and Bella were meant to be, Edward wasn't exactly a saint when he was trying to keep Bella with him. just thought i would point that out :P
Thanks for writing this. It's was a very insightful opinion. =)
The lady knew what she was getting into.
I think maybe some people would argue that if Edward really knows Bella then he should have forseen that leaving would cause her so much pain. I suppose he was thinking that him leaving would be better for her in the long run. I dont think he was selfish but I do think he perhaps didnt consider the possible consequences of his actions as much as he should have. I agree with you on how Jacob isnt perfect either (as much as I love him ;)) and that you cant say he never left Bella, he clearly did. I mean when Edward left she had Jacob...But when Jacob left she basically had no one.
So yeah I pretty much agree with you, I dont like Edward was selfish, we've seen how selfless he is when it comes to Bella throughout the books, but maybe he should have thought about what he was going to do before he did it, but he was probably very disturbed by what happened with Jasper.
Great article :)
xx
And, New Moon, in my opinion, is the book where they learned how much they loved each other. Edward had no idea that Bella would turn to depression. He didn't know she would cling to the thought of him, and that was his mistake.
In Eclipse, Chapter 22, when Edward was talking to Jacob, he listed the 4 options. He also mentioned how he chose the 3rd option, which was "the worst mistake of his very long life". He chose to take himself out of her world, hoping to force her into the first alternative for her safety. And of course, it nearly killed them both.
And, even though I dread it, her 2nd kiss with Jacob, or the "mouthrape", sort of closed the deal for Bella. That was when she chose Edward. She didn't want anyone else. The kiss is significant, but on the other hand, it angers me. lol
I know it made me annoyed at Jacob for tricking her, because the rest of the time he seemed to be so honest. There are so many mind games going on lol its hard to keep up with what they might be thinking. Thank god real life isnt that complicated (usually) :P
I'm Team Jasper, but when it comes to deciding which one (that's why teams were created, because she was in the meadle!!!) I'm Team Edward! And personally, I think it's just infantile to say that Jake didn't leave or that Edward sucks because he did! People should accept both perspectives! They both left, and they both did what they thought was best for Bella!
WOW.... I just came a bit harsh there! I don't mean any harm to anyone, just saying what I think:)
Lots of Love
Ashes:)
And seriously Jacob did not rally thought of Bella's safety when he left it was more because SAM had order him in the Alpha voice to stay away.. safety came later .
Lol Seriously fot the sake of being team something I would be Team Emmett is so Emmett lol and Def Team Alice she's also so Alice.
