Favorite Wood for Ukulele

papa posted on Sep 07, 2006 at 05:48PM
Well, I know what my answer is and what most purists will say. For me it's Koa all the way - I even named my 2nd child Koa ;-)

Mahogany is nice but I'm not so big on Spruce tops (for ukuleles anyway).

On the subject of Koa I also have a Martin 00 Koa guitar which is very nice.

By the way, I just found a couple of interesting related articles:

In-depth article about how wood type defines the sound of your instrument:
http://www.pantheonguitars.com/tonewoodds.htm

And a nice writeup from Martin & Co. on tonewoods (pictures and descriptions):

Koa is definitely one of the most beautiful woods I've ever seen.

As long as the wood isn't cheap plywood I'm happy :-)

I don't mind the spruce tops as much as papa. I do like them though I think maybe your dislike is that they look a little too much like mini-guitars?

Has anyone ever seen a bamboo ukulele? I've heard of bamboo for guitars but am wondering if ukuleles have received the same treatment.

Go here http://www.geocities.com/~ukulele/makerrs.html

You'll see a very nice bamboo ukulele. You'll have to scroll down a bit. It was made by Tony Graziano

Thanks belanos, those are some BEAUTIFUL instruments!

Bamboo makes a very interesting instrument. I'd love to hear one in person someday.
