All this talk about vampires, but what the heck is a vampire anyway? The definition has changed so much over time, that what once was considered a vampire is now called something else. The original European vampires were more like what we would call zombies today. Vampires have been based on demons and ghoulish spirits and reanimated corpses.
If we define a vampire merely as a creature that drinks blood, that would eliminate a lot of the creatures considered to be the ancestors to the modern types. Most of our concepts of vampires are evolved versions of the European legends. The word “vampire” wasn’t used until later, but the creatures they originated from were mostly revenants; reanimated corpses. These “vampires” were blamed, not for drinking blood necessarily, but for everything from plagues to miscarriages.
The vampire corpse would rise from the grave and murder those closest to it; its family and friends. Vampires were not necessarily creating other vampires, just killing people. Those who became vampires were ones who had been improperly buried or who committed suicide. The nachtzeherer of German lore would gnaw on its own hands and limbs in a frenzy...

Today’s post is about the fearsome Chinese vampire demon, the Kuang-shi.

The wicked kuang-shi, also known as the chiang-shi or kiang-si, comes into being by a demon possessing a corpse.Once it has a body it then takes on the appearance of a tall monstrous being with white or greenish hair all over its body. But what makes it look really scary is its long and sharp claws, red eyes and fangs.

The kuang-shi is a particularly vicious vampire that was known to rip its victims to pieces whilst feeding on their blood. If this creature isn’t killed right away and has the chance to grow in power it would get strong enough that it would gain the ability to fly, and I don’t need to tell you that a flying vampire is bad news. Not only could a powerful kuang-shi fly, but it is also said that if strong enough it could also turn into vapor and mist, or become completely invisible.

This nasty vamp can be trapped in its grave by sprinkling rice, iron, and red peas on the ground above it. A common method of killing the beast is lightning, and since that’s controlled by the forces of nature if you have a kuang-shi on your hands you could very...

When we submerse ourselves in everything that’s vampire related, we often find that the words “vampire” and “vampyre” are used interchangeably. But are these two things really one in the same? And if so, why the different spellings? I know that the very idea of vampires lends itself to interpretations of many different kinds but, are we really reinventing the English language here? No. There is actually a very clear distinction between the two and we thought that here, we’d break it down for you.

Quite simply, vampires are fictional. They are human corpses that have become reanimated and perhaps even dug themselves out of a grave. Vampires are also usually pretty scary because they’re really only concerned with killing other humans for blood. Edward Cullen, Sookie Stackhouse, and Elena Gilbert are some of our most favorite vampires. However, they are not real.

Vampyres, on the other hand, are very real and even walk among us on earth. Vampyres are individuals that believe that they have a real physical condition that requires them to drink blood at regular intervals. Whether that blood comes from a human or an animal is usually up to the...
