Michael J. Fox Spot for Stem Cell Research

Wow, this brought tears to my eyes. I had no idea that Michael J. Fox's illness had advanced this far. I'm not trying to be political, just wanted to share this message from a brave soul battling a horrible disease.

Rush Limbaugh apparently attacks Fox for "acting" in this commercial:

Too bad the whole commercial is based on a false premise. No one has opposed stem cell research. They have opposed fetal cell research, which doesn't work and has only caused tumors. They have not opposed cord blood or adult cell research, which has produced cures.

Saying that fetal cell research "doesn't work and has only caused tumors" doesn't really cut it if we're going to talk about false premises.

Human embryonic stem cells are thought to have much greater developmental potential than adult stem cells. This means that embryonic stem cells may be pluripotent—that is, able to give rise to cells found in all tissues of the embryo except for germ cells rather than being merely multipotent—restricted to specific subpopulations of cell types, as adult stem cells are thought to be.

So sure, both types of stem cells warrant further study. The interest around fetal stem cells simply hangs on the their greater developmental potential.

Of course, if we don't do the research, we'll never know. But *someone* else will know and/or reap the benefits. Which is why other countries have already pulled ahead of the U.S. in advancing scientific stem cell research.
