One of the recent YouTube outage messages.
|
For a lot of users, the world of online video sharing begins and ends with YouTube. And, to a certain extent, it did for me too, up until a few months ago. Over the past few months YouTube seems to have become less and less compelling. In fact, I find myself using the site less and less and going to other upstart video sharing sites with greater frequency (like Dailymotion, Bolt, Guba and others).
Now I can't knock the success of YouTube. These guys pioneered simple, easy and addicting video sharing (the guys at iFilm and Atom Films must be kicking themselves that they missed out on YouTube's winning formula). And the fact that they were acquired in a $1.75B Google buyout speaks volumes.
BUT...
All this doesn't mean I'm going to stick around. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Copyright crackdowns
Yeah, I know. It's not right. But copyrighted material is the reason we all went to YouTube in the first place (comon', admit it!). And, by all accounts, it's one of the signifcant factors that led to YouTube's stratospheric rise. Post-acquisition YouTube, however, can't swing quite as freely, so we've seen a marked crackdown on copyrighted videos on their site ranging from rapid removal of movies, to tv shows to short tv clips and excerpts. The crackdowns also create a lot of uncertainty for uploaders. If I'm uploading something in that "grey" copyright area, should I bother with YouTube knowing that it might be removed the next day?
2. Server outages
This one drives me nuts. YouTube still seems to be the most outage prone top 10 web property I've ever encountered. Whoever is managing the server operations, production upgrades, etc. should be fired. Late summer the outages were really bad. I remember several in a single week with one even occuring in the middle of the day. Even last night, during primetime surfing hours there was a lengthy 1-2 hour outage. I know they're dealing with growing pains, but outages just plain suck. If I can't count on your site to be around when I need a fix (and I'm already dinging you on point #1), then once again, I'm off to greener pastures.
3. The 10-minute cap
I know you can get a special account that lets you upload longer length videos, but the 10-minute cap for free accounts is completely lame.
4. Upload Woes
Uploading to YouTube is like playing Russian Roulette. You never really know if your video is going to make it. Sometimes when it does, you get strange video artifacts from the compression/conversion routine (this has happened to me a couple of times with perfectly good source material). I've also experience long 12-36 hour waits for my video to be fully processed and posted. This is painful when I need to get something up and available quickly. I've used several other sites for video uploads and have had the video post almost instantly following upload.
5. Search Indexing is Slowwwwww
The new trailer to The Simpsons movie premiered the other night and I figured I'd check YouTube to see if it was available. Of course, when I received search results for Simpsons sorted by date the most recent clips available were from over 16 hours ago. And this isn't the first time I've seen this on YouTube. YouTube's search index updates far too infrequently for a site with such a rich library and constant inflow of new clips. I went to Google Video and sure enough, there it was (along with freshly added videos in the search results).
To be fair, YouTube still does a lot of things very well. There is no other site out there with the breadth and variety of video offerings and the huge audience means you have the *potential* to get your material in front of a lot of eyeballs. The recent Google acquisition (hopefully) means that server issues, upload woes and search indexing will be improved with the help of a technology-savvy and deep-pocketed parent. And with the biz-dev effort to strike meaningful content partnerships with the large media companies there's bound to be more legal content on YouTube. But all of this will take precious time (and lord knows we webizens are an impatient lot).
So while I will still be using YouTube for some of my video sharing needs, it's no longer my primary nor sole source for online video. There's just too much great stuff being posted to Daily Motion, Bolt, VidLife, Guba, OUOU and other sharing sites out there (and as always, I'll be using Fanpop for organizing and grouping cool videos regardless of where they're hosted - gotta love the eps on the Galactica Spot).
But enough of my rant, what do you think? Does YouTube suck? Are you using it less? Are there other alternatives you think are more worthy?

this is why the lemming only embeds from dailymotion
I don't agree with the DMCA, and I realize it's hard for YouTube to yank its own stuff. I'm mostly fed up with the big companies being so damn anal about copyrights! The effect on profit of people putting up videos about their product is virtually nothing. What is most upsetting is when a company threatens a lawsuit. I mean, be realistic, it's a stupid file-sharing site, why do they freak out about everything? Especially the big ones! Disney, for example - they are up to their ears in cash and yet they want to sue some non-profit website over nothing. It hurts their image more than leaving well alone would hurt their profit.
Again, a great list, and I also choose to stick with smaller sites that don't get crawled every day by corporations.
All my personal info was posted on it aswell as my videos being removed . that was 4 days ago and with over 10 request to youtube for help they have done not one thing .
Myself I think it's run by people who are incompetent and with management like this it's only amatter of time before they hit bottom.
But why should we care? We just open another window/tab and use other site; it’s their loss.
I put Youtube tonight under news in google and these two links came up:

YouTube to test technology that removes pirated video
AP, LOS ANGELES
Thursday, Jun 14, 2007, Page 10
The popular video sharing Web site YouTube will begin testing video recognition technology in an effort to help remove pirated content.
The test will begin next month with hopes that the software, designed to recognize copyright content in videos, will be ready to roll out later this year, the company said. The testing will be in conjunction with partners Time Warner Inc and the Walt Disney Co.
The site's owner, Google Inc, has pledged to adopt some kind of solution to identify copyright content on its site so it can remove pirated content or negotiate with owners for a license.

For weeks, Ken Boehm blanketed the Internet as he hunted for video clips.
But the former prosecutor is no YouTube fan. Boehm is chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center, an independent watchdog group known for digging up corruption in the nation's capital.
The NLPC is perhaps best known for uncovering wrongdoing in a $21 billion deal between the Air Force and Boeing in 2003 that resulted in jail time for two Boeing executives. The group is looking beyond the Beltway and has begun examining copyright violations at Google, which owns the YouTube video-sharing site.
"Many millions of dollars in intellectual property is being taken without the knowledge or approval of the property owners," said Boehm, 58. "Google has forced these property owners into a position of chasing their own content on YouTube, a sort of Whac-A-Mole effect. Ultimately there has to be a fairer way to do this."
Boehm said at this point he only wants to "stir up whatever trouble I can to get the attention of folks."
In his first move, he has compiled a list of more than 125 full-length feature films and TV shows that, according to his estimates, cost copyright owners about $150 million. His list includes Warner Bros' Blood Diamond, Paramount Pictures' Juice and NBC's The Office.
The film studios and TV network confirmed that the links provided by Boehm were to pirated content.
Watch OUT! Youtube IS STILL NOT SAFE TO USE! The guy who wrote this blog is right on everything he is saying. Use Rapidshare or something else. Can't advocate most other websites as all of them are being targeted.
P.S. There is no more google video as expected it finally merged with youtube. which was expected because...duh...google bought youtube. A search for video on google now just links to youtube search results meaning....all the idiots who uploaded on google video lost there content. Enjoy! Plus yahoo video has changed over and over again. Read months ago daily motion was sued big time and it is still around even though it seemed that it would close back then. I lost my train of thought and addresses to some other such sites that are out there, but none is as huge as youtube. I am in fear it will get fucked up Again! I returned to post news clips. After reading this crap tonight...I am aiming to tell everyone I can in the comments sections at youtube. But the freaking site is down tonight to maintenance. Idiots could be already deleting. The original people who created youtube are money hungry losers. All the jack asses Like Viacom can kiss my butt.
They are the slowest ever , and when i find a link to a movie that leads me there- or youku, etc- i don't bother anymore!
I'm still finding videos on google video btw. videos of feature length, etc. so i wonder if google will keep it going because the general public seems to be treating them as different products?
YouTube is not a "community". Youtube is site run by an idiot, full of sound and fury and copywrited material, signifying nothing.
YouTube totally sucks. Use the other sites mentioned in these comments...like collegehumour.com, stickam.com, and others. These sites actually respect the users, pay the users, and are not run by utterly incompetent hacks.
Personaly I think the best site is: www.letsvidz.com/index.php
Mainly because I own it lol.
I think you are living in the past. One of these days, because of the "not available in your country" crap, someone will take advantage of their great weakness. And that will be their downfall. If you are in the "wrong side" of the world, never use youtube, because it really sucks and there is a large chance that when you are searching for a video, an error message "This video is not available in your country" will pop up.
1-you don't have infinite comments, ya comment a few videos you need to write something stupid and unessesary
2-youtube takes off the sound of some music videos, thats stupid!!
3-if youtube wants, youtube deletes videos, very cool ones, youtube is a sack of shit!!!
4-youtube sucks
piece of shit
fuck yourself
If you are tired of youtube all together than you should probably leave your bedroom and go interact with the real world ;)
we all know that since google has bought youtube the site has begun to suck, because now google is throwing in ads......um hello its on the web wtf why are there ads on someone elses's video that they may have made, well if they can get away with that then i want commercial endoursments even if it is a 5 second commericial you ought to have to pay because you put it on my video without asking (and they contradict themselves as well), and to own or have proper authority to uploads videos well wtf that takes away from uploading videos from your pc doesnt it ? its the biggest pointless idea ever if every one were to follow using the copyright laws and use proper authority to do things there would be no need for uploading sites such as youtube, that site should be boycotted until they are hit with the realization that they must be crazy or just plain stupid, but this goes for several other sites youtube just happens to have the best examples, and unless these sites are told no they will probably keep pushin to see how far they can get and who knows how far that will be....
