I have been thinking a lot of the war between God of War & Battling Bard of Potedia. They both want to win over Xena. Ares seducing her to the darkside, and be his Warrior Queen to rule the world. Gabrielle showing her the life of meaning.
Also don't forget the most biggest Season that lead Xena to the dark. The third season, so many deals were leading different ways. Xena's life was in danger that she killed Hope, she will be dead by the fates. Gabrielle's deal to him, that if she killed Hope, she be cut by the Fates itself. Gabrielle saved Xena's life by falling down to the lava pit

Ever since Gabrielle first met Ares things were getting hecked it, Ares want Xena so badly but there is certain someone holding him back Gabrielle protecting Xena from her darkside.
Season 5 was the best example Ares wants to be the love of Xena's life and have a child there own. Gabrielle was alway there for Xena showing her theres more to life then to voilence. In epsiode "Amphipolis Under Siege" Gabrielle called down Ares to talk about that Xena did in fact made a deal to him to be on her side to defeat Athena, however Gabrielle said to him If even leave a hand on her You will..Ares response was I will what?. You will destory her Gabrielle said.
Ares was seeing from Gabrielle that Xena does love him, but if you lead her back in her dark ways. She will never be with you.
Season 6, when Gabrielle and Ares had some good conversation about what they both agree on it was Xena only.
