The group was led into a den and several wolves remained at the entrance to guard them. Humphrey and the others gathered in the back and quietly began to discuss their next move. Humphrey wasn’t participating much, and Kate took notice.
“Humphrey?” she asked. “Are you okay?”
“Not exactly,” Humphrey replied. “He knew this would happen.”
“Viggo. When he gave me this mark, he told me it would cause problems for me in the future,” Humphrey said. “He didn’t just use it to remind me of him. He knew he was going to use it to turn...
Back at the Western Pack, Viggo and Robert were enjoying some much needed and exceedingly rare free time. However, it wasn’t entirely for fun as Viggo felt the need to enhance Robert’s sense of strategy since his previous plan had failed so spectacularly. The day was young, and the temperature was perfect for relaxing outside.
Viggo leaned back in his lawn chair, the strands of fur on his wolf pelt vest slightly blowing in the wind, his grey hair doing the same. The two friends then began their game of chess, which had taken some convincing to get Robert...
The group immediately set out and began walking through the forest, heading northeast toward where the red dot on the map was. They traveled slowly and carefully, always keeping their ears and noses open for any sign of Viggo in case this was a trap. It was early morning and the sun was beginning to rise when they stopped. Stinky smelled a pack of wolves nearby and Runt climbed up a tree to try and see farther into the trees.
“Now remember,” Humphrey was saying, “Viggo is a master of deception. We need to stay one step ahead of him, or it’s game...
Everyone began to get settled and Adam started showing Humphrey and Viper through the maze inside the cliff. It was pretty dark inside for a human, but Humphrey and Adam had no problem seeing down the many tunnels and Adam knew his way around.
“We dug this out in case we were ever attacked again so we’d have a safe way to retreat without anyone knowing,” Adam explained. “Each den has a tunnel in the back that both connects the dens, and also leads into the maze.”
“So, what’s on the other side of this cliff anyway?” Humphrey asked.
For the next four months, Leyla and Viper anxiously waited for any news about Humphrey. Then one day in early spring, they finally got it. Humphrey was finally getting out of his cast and Leyla left to go and get him. When she got there, she almost didn’t recognize him. Because he had spent so much time completely immobilized, Humphrey was being wheeled around on a large, flat cart. His fur also hadn’t gotten much of a chance to grow back while he was in the cast, so Leyla could see his bare skin and most of his body was only covered in a very light coat of fur. His head was the only thing...
The sun rose in the valley the next day. By then, Viggo and his men had begun to once again make themselves at home. Some of the Crimson Pack had been put on border patrol, others were guarding the western wolves with some of Viggo’s men in the western area of the territory.
By midday, Robert arrived, along with some more men and supplies from the base in the Northern Region. As the men began setting up, Robert approached Viggo.
"Well,” he said, “where are they?”
“Where do you think?” Viggo asked casually. “They’re gone.”
Part 2: His Greatest Gambit Chapter 11: Important Meeting
For two days after the cliffside ambush, Humphrey and the group wandered through the woods, trying to find a better place to hide out, but without much luck. Viggo had forced them from every safe haven they could think of.
“We need to find a better place to hide,” Humphrey said.
“Humphrey, we have nowhere else to go,” Adam replied.
“Yeah,” Kenya agreed, “they’ve bullied us away from every safe haven we have.”
“Not every safe haven,” Humphrey said.
“What do you mean?” Adam asked. “Where else can we go?”
When Humphrey woke up the next day, he was in a completely different place. For a moment, he thought he was back in the pack, but as he looked around, he realized that nothing was familiar. The rocks, the grass, the one single tree that was there. He then noticed a fence surrounding the small area he had woken up in with a grey stone building and a door on one side. He was confused. Where was he? Where was Leyla?
“Hey!” a voice called.
Humphrey turned around and looked at who the voice belonged to. He noticed another wolf standing behind him, looking at him. The wolf had dark grey fur and...
By the time morning came, Kenya had returned, Humphrey and the others had moved back into the valley, and the Crimson Pack had gone out deep into the forest. For about an hour, Viggo helped them clear out everything he and his men had set up during their occupation and they took it deep into the woods to where all the other furniture from last time was laying. Once that was done, Humphrey and the others gathered at the bottom of the small cliff where Kate and Humphrey’s den used to be. They began talking about what to do about Viggo.
The two had just finished hunting a caribou and were busy eating when Humphrey suddenly felt a cold chill run down his spine. He suddenly felt the instinctual need to check his surroundings and he eventually spotted something deep in the trees that made his blood run cold.
“Joe,” he said, not taking his eye off of what he was looking at.
“What is-” Joe began but stopped when he saw the frightened look on Humphrey’s face.
“Look,” Humphrey said.
Joe followed his gaze and soon he froze in fear too.
Deep in the trees, looking directly at them was the man from the zoo. He looked even more...
Humphrey slowly walked up to Runt’s lifeless body and laid down next to it, setting his head down on top of his son’s body and slowly beginning to cry. Humphrey simply laid there, not moving, remaining with Runt long after his eyes had gone dry, entirely consumed by his grief. Even after everyone else had had their time and left, even as night fell, Humphrey still continued to stay with Runt.
The sun rose the next day and as Kate headed out toward the valley, her heart was crushed to see Humphrey still laying there.
“Has he really been out there all night?” Adam asked....
