Avril Lavigne Article: Avril Is Misunderstood.

It has come to my attention that the majority of the world will never accept Avril again (at least during this phase), all thanks to her song "What the Hell." The second single shouldn't really help much either.

At first, I thought it was only people on Youtube who were being stubborn about the whole thing, but turns out it's everyone. A week or two ago, I was talking to my friend about music. We both agree that Lady Gaga is a creepy weirdo, and Ke$ha is trashy and annoying. My friend was talking about how she doesn't like either of their attitudes, and this was coming from probably the most positive, optimistic person I know. Then I started ranting about how Lady Gaga tries way too hard to be unique, when all Avril Lavigne had to do was wear ties and baggy pants. Then my friend said she doesn't like Avril's attitude either, and how she shows how "trashy" she is with WTH, and even "Girlfriend." Then of course, I tried explaining how she wasn't serious with the song and didn't even want to release it, but that didn't really go anywhere. This whole incident just showed me that, if someone as optimistic as her doesn't even like Avril because of that song, then no one else will, other than die-hard fans and mainstream addicts. (No offense to anyone who is...)

So, in case an anti-fan like that happens to come across this page, I want to clear a few things up. Avril was not serious with "What the Hell." It was just a song she wrote for fun and didn't even plan on releasing. But of course, her label RCA forced her to. They wanted the entire album of Goodbye Lullaby to be another Best Damn Thing because that's what sells these days. Avril did not want this, however, so she put her foot down, and that caused some conflicts with her and RCA, hence, the year-long delay (plus the divorce). In the end, she had to compromise, and put a couple upbeat songs on the record (WTH and Smile), but the rest of the album is just like Let Go. I only wish she could've shown people that by releasing a deeper song as a second single...

That's another thing that frustrates me. The way the musical/mainstream industry works... they only play a single or two that's relatively new from an album, and they play it over and over and over again on the radio until it drives enough people mad. Because of this, most people either don't bother to look up Avril because they get enough of her one song on the radio, or they look her up only to listen to that song. It's such a shame that those people will never hear the brilliance of her unpopular songs like "Who Knows," "Remember When," "Anything But Ordinary," etc. (Just listing random ones that come to mind.)

Even though everyone else complains about WTH being overplayed and whatnot, I've actually only heard it once on the radio. Since my family is obsessed with mainstream, I'm forced to listen to it quite frequently, but instead of hearing Avril's songs, I hear Gaga and Katy Perry and Taylor Swift crap that came out either before or around the same time as Goodbye Lullaby. Avril's been around WAY longer than all of them, and her music is way better (IMO obviously) than theirs, and it's new. Shouldn't radio stations be playing her music (at least the upbeat songs) as well? Or at least on more than one station, so it's not like a scavenger hunt to try and find one that plays her. I've noticed the same thing with bands like Paramore. Their music is incredible as well, but when Brand New Eyes came out, I never heard their music on the radio.

Anyways, kinda got off topic there. Sure, Avril can be crazy and immature at times, sometimes more than others. But can't we all? I see people in their 30's-40's acting WAY less mature than her. She's only 26. She's a happy person who wants to have fun. Yeah, she was annoying as heck on the Chelsea Lately interview and I much prefer watching her other ones, but that was just her being a free spirit. It's what her song "Smile" is about. I see interviews of Hayley Williams acting just as crazy as Avril does at times, but no one ever complains about that, even though those two are only 2 or 3 years apart.

Well, I guess my point being is, people, get over that fact that Avril isn't a 17-year-old tomboy anymore. Forget about the whole Girlfriend/Best Damn Thing era, because Goodbye Lullaby is fantastic, and if you don't want upbeat songs, skip over WTH and "Smile." The album is just like Let Go for the most part, so at least give it a shot before assuming it's just like her previous record.

emmett I get annoyed about fans saying Avril's music is crap just by listening to 'Girlfriend', 'What The Hell', 'Smile' etc. I know so many people that hate her for that. 123a Girlfriend, What The Hell, Smile are all fun. and a "fun song" means, a song you can dance to, and you [b]can't[/b] dance to slow guitars and piano. That's why Avril HAD to release some fun songs to please her record label. We all know her problem with RCA, and so, YOU CAN'T judge a book from its cover. <::::::::::: this quote also applies on albums, singles etc. I think i'm gonna say this over and over and over till the world ends....

They'd be all "Well she shouldn't have recorded a song drunk in the first place" etc etc. And while I do agree with that to some extent, it's not like she was dangerously drunk and it's not illegal or anything. She didn't record the whole album drunk. It's just these little things that people use to bash Avril, and they get the most support from other people for their arguments, no matter how ignorant they are. It seriously irks me.

Just based on songs like Girlfriend I probably wouldn't even have become her fan, I became her fan because her songs were different and meaningful and because she wasn't like everybody else but her singles (from goodbye lullaby) make her look exactly like everybody else! The opposite of what the rest of her album is like and are the worst songs on the album (in my opinion). I mean Smile was catchy for a while but then it got boring, but meaningful songs like Wish you Were Here I still love even after playing them over and over again! Why couldn't they just release a slower song from the album? The upbeat ones are obviously not working. And isn't that why everyone loved her in the first place? Being her and being different! Not the slutty (i cant find the right word!) girl they're trying to make her look like!

I didn't become a fan just from hearing Girlfriend; I thought it was alright, but then I actually took the time to look into her other music, and it was definitely worth it. I only wish more people would do the same, and even if they still don't like her, at least they gave her music a try.

I've never been a fan of singles. I mean, I've always liked the other tracks on the album rather than the singles, be it any musician. But her other tracks on album are beyond words. Its sad how a Gaga song has 1 000 000 000 views on youtube while the meaningful songs are far away from this number.It's not like it matters that much, but hey.I guess people, nowadays, like listening to fake poodles like Kesha, Gaga etc etc, insted of listening to bands/singers whose songs aren't about how you drive around with your expensive car. Bands like Simple Plan to name one.They are truly the best band ever.

Other than a couple Autobiography singles and Invisible, the other ones are, well... crap. (L.O.V.E., Outta My Head, etc.) But then you listen to Say Goodbye and Undiscovered and all the other unknown tracks, and it's hard to believe it's the same singer. It's the same thing with Avril. Try transitioning from What the Hell to Goodbye. You'd hardly know it's her.

viju ^ I agree. There are just three singles I'd say I like - Pieces of Me, Shadow and Invisible. Other ones are annoying. And yeah, when I heard her other tracks on album, they were amazing. I agree. Same thing is with Avril. I've never been a fan of Sk8r Boi, Girlfriend, Hot, When You're Gone and other singles too. But if you just see the other tracks, they're Amazing.

But I've actually heard a variety of their songs, and IMO, Ke$ha's all sound the same, and I just don't like Gaga. But I don't form these opinions only based on a couple singles by them.

halloula Well agree with all of you for the most part ,every artist have to re-invent himself but that doesn't work with all of them to be honest and apprently it's not working with Avril as it should be . But in the end everyone is entitled with there own opinions.

I do wish she would calm down a little at times, but it's not like I hate her for it or anything. If people are annoyed by her personality, they should just listen to her music and not watch interviews.

emmett So today I was talking to my friend about Avril music. The only Avril songs he's heard are: Smile, Girlfriend, Sk8er Boi, What The Hell and Hot. All her upbeat bratty pop singles (excluding Sk8er Boi). He was saying she is shit, can't sing, she's a slutty pop auto tuned bitch, he'd rather chew his ears off than listen to her etc. This is just another example of how people misunderstand Avril and her music. I just really, really hope that Avril releases a deep and meaningful song from Goodbye Lullaby to show the people that don't bother to give her a chance that she is actually a talented musician.

[/i] Well, she still shows off her talent in her upbeat songs. Her vocals are incredible in WTH and Smile, and there really is hidden meaning in all those songs besides Girlfriend. I think that rather than showing people she has [i]talent[/i] with a meaningful single, it'll show them she has a heart. But then again, When You're Gone, I'm With You, My Happy Ending, etc. were all pretty popular when they were released, yet people don't seem to know those songs.
