Jeez, Part 14. Sorry it's been dragging. This'll be the last for this fanfic, but I'm hoping to start a new one soon, if I can fit it into my schedule.
Hope it's okay, took me like 15 tries.
"The fragmentation here would only result if the weapon had a hilt. We'll know more after we finish the examination and Hodgins gets some samples." said Brennan, showing Wendall what she'd found. The worked quietly, keeping the bones close to their faces or under a microscope so they could see the tiniest anomaly. Hodgins worked near them, going between his microscope and computer.
Cam walked toward the platform, followed closely by Angela. They made there way to the skeleton and stopped in front of Dr. Brennan. Cam looked at Brennan, a mixture of disapproval and amusement on her face.
"Dr. Brennan?" said Cam. Brennan continued her examination, but Cam went on, "I need to speak with you. I've noticed you and Booth acting differently, ever since he got out of the hospital."
Brennan looked up now, but seeing Booth coming toward them, she went back to her work, just in case her face revealed anything. "And?"
"And I want to know what's going on between you two. I'm the boss, remember?" Booth walked onto the platform now. He met Brennan at the examination table and stood next to her protectively.
"Nothing is going on Cam. We have work to do." said Brennan, straightening herself next to Booth.
"Bren, we just want to know if there's anything there. I'm your best friend, you can tell me." said Angela in a pleading voice.
"Ange, I have to get back to work. I'm done with the skull, by the way." Brennan handed her the skull.
"K. I'll get to work. Come on Cam." said Angela, pulling Cam's arm as she turned away.
Booth leaned down, leveling himself with Temperance. "Close one. Why didn't you say anything?"
"I couldn't give in. Besides, it's not affecting our work."
The next few days went by smoothly, Brennan went into the field with Booth as usual, Wendall helped out with the forensics. After a particularly hard day, Brennan and Booth decided to get dinner before going home. They sat in the diner, the table next to the window.
"Booth, what would you say we are?" said Brennan, reaching over to take one of his fries.
Booth swatted playfully at her hand and replied, "I don't know. Depends on who you ask."
"I'm asking you."
"I think we're a couple. I mean, we do all the things people do in relationships."
"Like what?" asked Brennan, picking at her salad.
"We eat off each other's plates, you come with me on days out with Parker. You know, couple things." said Booth, taking a big bite of his burger.
"Oh..." she thought for a moment, "In all the other relationships I've had, we didn't do those types of things."
Booth sighed, wiped his face, then-"Bones, it's hard to get close to you. Those guys just didn't try as hard as me, I guess. What's this all about?"
"The other day, when Cam asked about us."
Booth looked puzzled, "What does that have to do with what we consider ourselves?"
"Well, if I had told her, what would I have said?" Brennan looked worried, like it truly mattered what they told people. She had stopped eating completely now, her stomach too full of knots for her to eat.
"Whatever you wanted. We are what we want to be. If a relationship scares you, we could tell people we're seeing each other casually."
"It doesn't scare me, I just don't want to get into things too quickly. If it ends badly, then work will be awkward for both of us." she said.
"Who says it has to end?" challenged Booth, leaning his elbows on the table.
"It's inevitable, Booth."
"No it's not. You just want it to be inevitable, prepare yourself for being hurt."
"Booth, you know I compartmentalize. If I were the one to cause the break up, I'd deal with it." said Temperance, a little uncertain about herself.
Booth leaned back in his chair and started eating again. After a moment- "I highly doubt I'll be the one to break us up, if we do break up."
Brennan smiled. She leaned forward and kissed his cheek, "I don't think I'll be the one to either."
"Hey, Wendall. I have the skull, running the picture through Missing Persons Database now...Can I ask you something?" said Angela, leaning against the counter as she looked at Wendall.
"Uhh, sure."
"Have you noticed anything between Booth and Brennan? You spend a lot of time with them, you know, without Cam or Hodgins or me."
"Well..." said Wendall uncertainly, not wanting to betray his boss.
"It's fine, I'm her best friend, I need to know these things."
"Well, after you and Cam asked about them the other day, Booth asked her why she didn't tell. And once I saw them kissing in her office, and holding hands in the parking lot."
"Oh, wow. Thanks, Wendall. I won't tell her you told." And with that, she went off in search of Booth.
Booth sat in Brennan's office, feet on the coffee table and hands passing a ball back and forth. He sang under his breath, waiting for Brennan to get back. He sat up quickly when he saw Angela in front of him, looking sternly at him.
"I know about you two."
"Huh?" said Booth.
"Booth, you and Brennan, you're together...Right?"
"Uhh, yeah? I mean we're together, but I don't know if Bones would want me to confirm it. Who told you?" asked Booth curiously.
"Wendall. You guys aren't exactly good about hiding it around the lab."
"Right. I gotta go get Bones, new suspect."
"Yeah, right." said Angela slyly.
"Bones! I'm back!" called Booth, carrying the groceries into the apartment. He walked into the kitchen and started unpacking the food. As he was putting the eggs in the fridge Brennan walked in, wearing only a nightshirt. Booth froze, amazed that she would even buy such a revealing article of clothing. Brennan smirked and helped with the rest of the groceries. She started dinner, talking about work and such.
"So what's new with you?" said Brennan, looking up from her chicken.
"I talked to Angela today. She knows about us, I guess Wendall saw us together or something. This is amazing."
"Thanks. So, what'd you say to her? I assume she didn't tell you she knew then just walked away."
"I said I didn't know if should confirm it, that I wanted to let you do that. If you want to." he looked at her uncertainly as he said this.
Later that night, Booth crept into Brennan's room. She was laying on her bed, curled into the fetal position. He tip-toed to the bed and walked around to the other side, slipping under the covers.
"Booth?" said Brennan groggily.
"Shhh, go back to sleep." he said. He brushed the hair from her face and hummed softly, putting her to sleep quickly. "I love you, Bones. Always."
Comments are very much appreciated! This is the last one, so I hope it's ok :/
