Chapter 5
He waited until she was asleep before he went in the bathroom to take a shower. His plane was scheduled to leave at 9:00 the next morning and it was already 2:00 am. He removed the rest of his clothes in the bathroom and took a long cool shower. As he came back into the bedroom dressed he noticed that Bones was no longer in bed but sitting in a chair looking out into the night. She had put on a bathrobe and was now covered.
“Bones what’s wrong?”
She looked over at Booth. He could see that she was upset.
“Booth, about what happened”
“Bones, you are a beautiful woman but you and I have something special. We are partners and partners take care of each other.”
“Booth you’re right as always. It is so nice to have someone you can trust and who is always there for you.” As she said this, she had left the chair and came over to Booth. She put her arms around him and rested her head on his shoulders as she has done numerous times in the past. He could smell the fresh scent of her hair as he rested his head against hers. She turned her face to look at him their lips were almost touching. He wanted to kiss her and take her, but he did not want to rush her because she does not like to be rushed. He was looking at her face when she said. “Booth you’re more than a partner to me. When you were in that coma I thought my world had stopped, I did not know what to do to bring you back. I felt alone without you. I have been alone since I was fifteen and I don’t ever want to feel like that again.”
“Bones I promise never to leave you. I will do anything for you even kill, you know that.”
“Booth, I know that, but I feel so empty inside like something is missing. I want to feel what other people feel when they love someone and they are loved by someone.”
Booth looked at her and could not restrain himself any longer because she had to know that she is loved even if she does not love him. “Bones, you are smart, talented and beautiful and I have to tell you truthfully that I am hopelessly in love with you.”
“Booth, does being in love make you feel light headed and giddy? Do you feel that any moment apart is an eternity? When the person you love enters a room does your heart feel like it has skipped a beat?”
“Bones you don’t analyze love you just feel it.”
“Booth, that’s how I feel about you.”
“So you love me.”
“Yes, Booth, if loving someone means that your whole world is that person.” When she said this, his lips touched hers in a soft and lingering kiss. He could feel her body moving against his and his desire increasing for her.
“Bones are you sure as I don’t want us to rush into this.”
“Booth I am never surer about anything and I think we have waited long enough.”
He then kissed her more firmly until her lips parted to accept his tongue. As his lips and tongue were exploring hers, she had moved her hands to undo his belt and unzip his fly. He had moved his hands to her shoulders and was removing the bathrobe and letting it slip to the floor. She had now moved her exploring hands to the back of his waist and was pushing his trousers down over his buttocks. As his pants fell to the floor, he stepped out of them; he lifted her up and carried her to the bed. As he laid her down, his hands moved along her waist to her panties where his hands moved inside to increase her arousal. She in turn had now removed his shirt and shorts. Her mouth was exploring his bare chest while her hands moved to bring him to full peak. By now both of them were fully naked and their bodies were a gleam of perspiration. At this point there was no going back, as he penetrated deep inside Bones emitted a low moan. Within moments they were in synchronization of movement ultimately to arrive at the crescendo together.
As they lay together exhausted, Bones whispered. “Booth”
“Yes, Bones.”
“I was completely irrational.”
“What do you mean?” He sat up and turned to look at her thinking she is now regretting this and not really in love with him.
“I was afraid to admit that I loved you because I did not know you loved me, but I should have told you anyway.” She then reached up and pulled his face to hers and kissed him in a way that let him know she loved him in no uncertain terms.
It did not take long before they were both intertwined with each other. At 6:00 am the phone rang to give them a wake up call but as they had never gone to sleep it was more of a reminder that they both needed to be someplace else, but that did not stop them from holding on to each other for another ten minutes.
“Booth you need to get to the airport and I need to get ready for the television interview.”
“Bones, do you want me to stay and go to the interview with you?”
“No Booth that’s OK. I’ll see you tonight, my flight is supposed to be in DC at 5:00 pm and I should get home by six.”
“I’ll pick up some Thai food and be there by seven.”
“Booth, don’t be late for your flight and I’ll see you tonight.” She watched him as he got dressed and just before he left he kissed her goodbye. She then went into the bathroom and got ready for her interview.
Later on the flight back to DC she was thinking how nice it would be to see Booth tonight. She got home a little after six and quickly showered again and changed into something more casual.
Booth arrived a few minutes before seven with the food as promised. She got two beers out of the refrigerator and they quietly ate dinner. After dinner Booth asked how her interview went because he remembered her first interviews were not that great.
“Booth it was very good, I even made the audience laugh. Why I don’t know. But she did ask some odd questions.”
“Like what?”
“She asked something about a boy or a girl, which I did not understand.”
“When is the interview scheduled to be shown?”
“According to them, it will be aired in ten weeks just before my book is released. They taped it in advance because I happened to be in Chicago this weekend.”
“Well Bones it’s getting late and you must be tired.”
“You’re right Booth; it has been a long weekend. We need to get some sleep; we can clean up the kitchen in the morning.”
Booth looked at her for a moment, not quite understanding what she meant as she walked to the bedroom.
“Booth aren’t you coming to bed?”
“Yes Bones” As he put the dishes in the sink. He then fully understood that he was staying the night.
Over the weeks they would sleep always together even when Booth had Parker. Parker was glad that Bones was his daddy’s girlfriend because now he has his own room at her apartment and a pool. If the one had to work late, the other would wait up. Eventually they each had half their clothes in each others apartment.
About the fifth week, Angela asked Brennan if there was something going on with her.
Brennan asked. “Why?”
“You look positively radiant. Are you seeing someone?”
Brennan could not lie to her best friend, so she said. “Yes.”
“Brennan what about Booth, does he know.”
“Yes he does.”
“I always thought the two of you would get together. Do you know if he is seeing anyone?”
“He is seeing someone.”
”Oh, is it serious for you?”
“Yes I think it is.”
Before Angela could ask any more questions, Brennan went to her office. Angela went to go tell Cam.
“Cam, Brennan is seeing someone and so is Booth. Do you know anything about it?”
“No Angela this is the first I heard, I thought Booth was in love with Dr. Brennan and now he is seeing someone and she’s OK with it?”
Angela just shrugged her shoulders and left the room.
Cam knew that Booth is usually very discreet about whom he is seeing so there is no point in asking him but if Dr. Brennan is OK with it she is not going to poke her nose around.
Later that night as Bones and Booth were lying in bed. She told him about what Angela asked and what she said.
“Bones, do you think she suspects?”
“I don’t think so; she looked disappointed for some reason.”
“Never mind, we just have to be careful. We don’t want Sweets to find out. If Angela and Cam find out, they can keep a secret, but we don’t want them to say anything and someone over hears.”
“You’re right.” Bones then turned out her light and Booth wrapped his arms around her. As they settled into their favorite sleeping positions, they quickly fell asleep.
Two days later there was a decaying corpse found near the Washington Monument and Brennan and Cam went to examine it. As they arrived at the scene, each of them went to exam the body. As Cam was pulling some of the clothes away to get a better look at the flesh left on the skin, Brennan was overcome by the smell. It took everything in her power not to throw up. Cam noticed Brennan’s discomfort and asked if she was alright.
“Sorry, it is just the smell that got to me.” I’ll be fine after the flesh is removed.
Cam thought it odd because Dr. Brennan was never bothered by the smells before. Maybe she is coming down with the flu.
The next morning after Booth had left for work. Bones was sick to her stomach and very light headed. When she finally got in the office, she needed to throw up again. Cam came in to check on her and asked whether she had the flu and needed to go home.
“No Cam, it’s alright. I’m just a little nauseated. It usually passes by noon.”
“How long has this been going on?”
“Oh, just for the last few days.”
Cam made note to watch her for the next couple of days.
Brennan managed to avoid answering anymore questions about her boyfriend for the next couple of weeks. Both she and Booth were keeping their relationship quiet.
They were both having coffee and Booth was having his usual slice of pie when Sweets joined them at their table to discuss some aspect of their recent case.
As they were talking, Brennan reached over and took a bite of Booth’s pie. Sweets saw this but said nothing until she took a second bite.
“I see Booth has finally convinced you to eat pie, Dr. Brennan.”
“No it is just that it that I wanted to try a bite to see how it tasted.” She answered as she took another bite.
“See Bones, I told you you’d like it.”
Booth ordered another slice of pie while he and Sweets discussed his profile on the latest case. As soon as the pie arrived, Bones devoured the whole slice of pie.
Booth looked at her in amazement and smiled. “Bones do you want another slice?”
Bones could not answer at first because her mouth was full of pie but she did shake her head yes.
Sweets was smiling as she consumed the third slice. He then asked her about her new book.
“Dr. Brennan isn’t your new book coming out next week and isn’t your interview with Oprah on this week?”
“Yes my book is out next week but I don’t know the exact date they will show the interview.” She answered.
Sweets then excused himself as he had something to discuss with Cam. Cam had asked him to come to her office because she had something to talk to him about.
“What is it that you wanted?” Sweets said as he entered the office.
“Oh Dr. Sweets, have you noticed anything strained between Booth and Dr. Brennan?”
“No, they seem to be their usual selves. In fact today Booth finally got Dr. Brennan to eat pie. Why do you ask?”
“Well, Angela found out that Dr. Brennan is seeing someone and Booth knows about it. I am just concerned about their working relationship. You said that Dr. Brennan ate pie? Was it just a bite?”
“No, she ate three slices.”
“That is not like her.” Cam said as she made another mental note. She called Angela into her office as soon as Sweets left.
“Angela I think there is something wrong with Dr. Brennan.”
“Why do you think that?”
“Well she has been vomiting from the smell of a dead body which is not like her and now Sweets is telling me she has eaten three slices of pie.”
“Brennan does not like pie. Another thing, have you noticed she seems to have a glow lately?”
“Angela, I am going to ask for some specimens because of some exam that needs to be done and I want you to help me with this.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“When I ask Dr. Brennan for hers you will tell her that you have already given me yours so that she does not suspect anything.”
The next morning, Cam approached Dr. Brennan and said she needed some samples for a test. Dr. Brennan started to ask about the test when Angela walked in and let her know she had already done hers. She then gave the samples to Cam with no further concern.
As Cam and Angela left the room, Angela asked “How long will this test take?”
“I should have the results by Monday.”
Friday night Sweets was sitting with Daisy who had been taping Oprah all week looking for Dr. Brennan’s interview. They had finally reached the last show of the week when they saw that this was where her interview was shown. They sat there and watched and after the interview, Sweets quickly called Cam and asked her had she seen Dr. Brennan’s interview. Cam said she had missed it.
“Well can we meet at the Jeffersonian tomorrow because there is going to be some repercussions about it and I think you should be prepared.”
The next morning Sweets was in Cam’s office showing her the tape. Cam sat there watching and after it was over she looked at Sweets. She asked him.
“Did I just hear right. Did she say she is having a baby?”
Daisy who was with Sweets chimed in saying in her squeal little voice. “Don’t you think that’s wonderful?”
Cam just looked at her. She then picked up the phone to call Angela and asked her to come in to see this tape.
Angela showed up with Hodgins and they both sat there and looked at the tape. Angela just had her mouth open and Hodgins had a grin on his face.
Cam looked at everyone in the room and asked what they all thought.
Hodgins was the first to answer when he said. “I think we are all going to be aunts and uncles.”
Angela gave him a look and said. “You all know how Brennan talks she may not have meant she is really pregnant but is only planning on having a kid someday.”
Cam responded. “What about the other comment?”
Sweets finally said. “What we need is both Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth to see this tape and get an explanation. I suggest that I call them and ask them both to come over here tomorrow so that we can be prepared for any problems that may come up.”
Everyone agreed and as they all left the office, Angela hung back to ask Cam.
“Are you testing to see if she is pregnant?”
“Yes because if she is then she will have to let Booth know and that could put more of a strain on their working relationship.”
That night Sweets called Booth and asked him to come into the office because he needed to alert him about a certain matter. He then called Dr. Brennan and asked her as well. What Sweets did not know is that they were both in Booth’s apartment relaxing after a long week. They looked at each other and discussed what could Sweets be concerned about.
“Booth you don’t think he knows about us, do you?”
“Bones, I don’t care if he does because I will always be with you no matter what happens.”
“Booth, have I told you I love you today.” She said as she put her arms around his neck and kissed him seductively.
He wrapped his arms around her and lifted her up while they were still kissing and carried her to the bedroom.
The next morning they arrived at the Jeffersonian and went to Cam’s office where Sweets had asked them to meet him. Cam and Sweets were already there.
Shortly after they arrived, Angela and Hodgins joined the group.
Cam was the one who asked first. “Dr. Brennan have you seen your interview on Oprah?”
“No, I did not know when they were going to show it. It was supposed to have been this week sometime.”
“Well there were some statements made and some answers that were a little unusual.” Sweets stated.
“Like what? I thought I answered the questions accurately, but it has been over ten weeks since the interview.” Bones responded.
“I think the best thing is to show the interview so Dr. Brennan can hear the entire interview and what was shown on television.” Cam said.
They all took a seat around the screen to view the interview. Bones sat on the sofa next to Booth with everyone else either sitting on a chair or just standing as the show played.”
They watched as the show opened and Oprah came out to say.
“My next guest is the leading forensic anthropologist in the country and a famous mystery writer. She has been involved in solving many unusual murder cases over the years along with her husband Special Agent Seeley Booth of the FBI, who she refers to as her partner. Please welcome Dr. Temperance Brennan.”
Applause as Brennan walks on stage and sits down next to Oprah, who begins the interview.
“I understand Dr. Brennan that you helped solve a fifteen year old murder in two days while visiting for your class reunion.”
“Yes I had come here to visit with one of my teachers and with the help of my partner, we figured out who the killer was.”
“Your partner being Agent Booth was here with you at your reunion?”
“Yes.” Long pause.
“You also have a new book coming out next week. This book was very intriguing and suspenseful. I have given a copy to every person in the audience today.” Applause
“I recommend everyone should go out a get a copy who likes a good murder mystery. Tell me Dr. Brennan do you have anything in the works right now.”
“I usually try to write only one book at a time.” There was another long pause before the next question.
“I recall one of your first interviews where you had said that you were never going to have any children, has that changed?”
“Yes I am going to have a baby.”
Applause
“Does your partner know?”
“Of course, he was there at conception.”
Laughter comes from the audience.
“Is it a boy or a girl?”
“Yes.”
“Now, we know you why you’re a great mystery writer. Thank you very much for coming today and we need to break for a commercial.” After the commercial break Oprah said.
“I want to thank Dr. Brennan for letting us in on her next project, with her partner. She left us with a mystery to solve and I believe we should all ask the FBI to find out if it is a boy or a girl. What do you think audience?”
Applause
Everyone looked at Brennan except Booth who just leaning back on the couch with his head back looking at the ceiling. He knew he should never leave Bones alone for an interview. It is the way she answers questions directly that people get the wrong interpretations.
“What about the statement she made in the beginning that Booth is your husband?” Sweets asked. .
“It may have been because Booth and she were undercover as husband and wife at the reunion to catch a killer that is why Oprah got that idea.” Hodgins said.
“Then why did you not correct her when you came on stage?” Cam asked.
Brennan explained that she was just coming out of the waiting room to come on stage and did not hear the full introduction; she only heard her name being announced as she walked on stage.
“All right we can explain that but what about what you said about going to have a baby?” Cam questioned.
“You all know that I have decided to have a baby someday. I was just saying that I am going future tense not actually having one. What was wrong with that?”
Booth explained to Bones. “It sounded to most people as if you were already having a baby and not just planning one in the future.”
“Oh.” Brennan uttered.
Angela asked. “What about the conception statement?”
Everyone was waiting for this answer even Booth.
“Sweets you remember I conceived the idea of a baby in your office and Booth was there. I don’t see what the problem is.”
Booth again explains to Bones. The audience thought she meant the other definition of conception.
“Is that why she asked me if it was a boy or a girl?”
“Yes, Bones.” Booth answered.
“Is that why you said yes to that question?” Angela asked.
“A baby can only be a boy or a girl.” Brennan responded.
“Did you get to hear what was said after the commercial break? Because what if someone actually asks the FBI to find out if it is a boy or a girl.” Hodgins said.
Brennan let them all know that while they cut the taping for the commercial break, Brennan had left the studio to catch her plane back to DC and did not hear what Oprah had said to the audience after the break.
“So you are not pregnant, Sweetie.” Angela sighed.
“Angela there is no way I could have been pregnant when I did that interview. You know that I have not had sex in quite some time before the reunion.” Brennan said in a matter of fact way.
“Then you have had sex since then.” Angela said looking at her closely.
“Well yes.”
“When was the last time you had sex?” Angela asked.
Booth interrupted by saying. “I don’t think we need to know the answer.”
“That’s all right Booth. I had very satisfying sex this morning, if you need to know.” Bones answered
Booth just rolled his head and thought we don’t need to go into details here.
Sweets saw Booth roll his head and asked. “Does it bother you that Dr. Brennan is having sex with someone?”
“No, not at all I’m happy she enjoyed it this morning.” Booth answered with a sly smile.
“I enjoyed it last night too Booth.” Bones added with a grin.
Cam noticed it first and she looked at Angela to see if she saw it too. Angela nodded at Cam and nudged Hodgins. Hodgins looked at Angela to see why she poked him and when Angela tilted her head toward Booth and Brennan he got the message.
“Well as long as there are no problems between you two. We all know that there was some confusion about the questions and answers that can be easily explained. So we’ll just leave it alone for now.” Sweets, had turned to leave the room and had missed all of the looks.
As Booth and Brennan got ready to leave the room, Cam said. “Hold it you two; you are not getting away that easily.”
“What is it Cam?” Booth asked.
“You know what it is, big guy.”
“Come on Sweetie, we figured it out. You are not going out with anyone other than Booth. And Booth you don’t have any other girlfriend other than Brennan. Admit it. Our lips are sealed.”
Booth and Bones looked at each other before they answered together. “You’re right, but don’t let Sweets know.”
“When did you finally realize that Booth was the one for you, Sweetie?”
“Angela it was on the last night of the reunion when he stayed to help me face those women.”
Hodgins gave Booth a slap on his back and said. “Congratulations, your secret is safe with me.”
“Dr. Brennan I have to confess that I did think you were pregnant and that is why I needed the specimen. I hope you understand.” Cam said.
“Sweetie I also thought so too. Especially when it looked like you had morning sickness and weird cravings for pie.” Angela added.
Brennan asked. “I’m sure the test showed negative. I do understand. You did it because you had concerns.”
“I haven’t looked at the results yet, they are on my desk.” Cam answered as she walked to her desk.
Cam looked at the test results; she showed it to Angela and Hodgins. Hodgins could not hold back when he uttered. “Agent Booth I don’t think your secret will be safe for long.”
Brennan quickly went to the desk to look at the results and said. “This can’t be right.”
“Bones what does it show?”
“Booth it shows that I am knocked over.”
“Bones, that is knocked up and how did this happen?”
Everyone looked at Booth and did not say anything until Hodgins quipped. “Do I need to explain the birds and the bees to you?”
Angela was the first to ask the all important question. “Sweetie, the test could be wrong. When did you have your last cycle?”
Brennan thought for a moment and answered. “I remember exactly. It was two weeks before the class reunion.”
“That was over twelve weeks ago. I think you are a little late and the test is a lot correct.” Cam added.
She went on to say. “What we need now is a way to keep this quiet until the right time.”
Booth meanwhile had pulled Brennan close to him and was telling her how beautiful she looked and that she is going to make a great mother.
“Dr. Brennan I will get the vitamins you should be taking, Angela will keep an eye out for you because pretty soon, you will get hormonal as your body changes. Hodgins you will keep an ear out if anyone asks about her.” Cam said to them.
“What do you want me to do, Cam?” Booth asked.
“You’ve done enough already.” She retorted, but then she recanted and said. “Watch her in the field don’t let her over do it especially for the next couple of months.”
“Cam, do you think anything will result from that interview.” Bones asked.
“Let’s hope not.” Cam answered.
A few days later, Booth was watching Bones in the shower when he noticed that she no longer had a flat stomach but she now had a little bump. He could not help himself from putting his hand over it and giving her a gentle hug.
It was a little over three weeks later, when Booth was summoned to the conference room by Director Jenkins, the head of the FBI. In addition there was Caroline, the FBI lawyer, Sweets, Cam, Dr. Banbridge, head of the Jeffersonian, and Bones.
Director Jenkins started the meeting off with by saying. “It has come to the attention of this department that Agent Booth and his partner Dr. Brennan have been secretly married and are now expecting a child. It is the policy of this agency that partners cannot be married to each other. Agent Booth what do you have to say?”
“Dr. Brennan and I are not married.” Booth answered.
“It was announced on Oprah.” Director Jenkins shot back.
“It was incorrect information.” Sweets interjected and he then explained the misconception.
“Well if they are not really married perhaps someone could explain why we have received over thirty copies of marriage licenses showing their marriage. The agency has received the copies from small little towns all over New England and one was from Las Vegas, Nevada.” Director Jenkins stated.
“It sounds like these licenses are from people who want to take credit for the marriage and are all phony.” Caroline offered.
“I don’t believe one has to be married to prove one’s commitment.” Bones added.
“What about the other questions?” Director Jenkins asked.
Sweets went on to explain about how Dr. Brennan answered the other questions and how the answers were misunderstood.
“Do you two know how many emails and phone calls this agency has received in the past three weeks asking if it is a boy or a girl? In addition, the mail department has been flooded with letters and baby gifts.
Dr. Banbridge and I have decided that we are going to split up your partnership. Dr. Brennan you will be assigned a new partner and Agent Booth you will work alone for now.” Director Jenkins said.
“I will not work with any other FBI agent. I will only work with Booth.” Bones said emphatically.
“Dr. Brennan, as head of the Jeffersonian, it is up to me when you are assigned to the FBI and Director Jenkins will decide who you will be assigned to. You have no choice in the matter.” Dr. Banbridge insisted.
“Then I will no longer work for the Jeffersonian. It is stated in my contract that if and when I decide I can terminate my association with the Jeffersonian. As you are aware I am far greater contribution to the prestige of the institution than you are.”
“Dr. Brennan are you threatening to quit?” Dr. Banbridge uttered
“No I am stating a fact.”
At that moment a clerk entered the room and informed Director Jenkins that he needed to see the latest copy of People magazine. He handed him a copy and placed additional copies on the table for the others to look at.
On the cover there was a mention of couples who work together for the public benefit with the names of Bill and Melinda Gates, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth listed. Inside the article showed how each of the couples was benefiting the public. Bill and Melinda Gates with their foundation for scholarships, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for their world causes and how Dr Brennan with her husband Agent Seeley Booth work together is solving unusual and bizarre murders not only in DC but around the country and abroad. The article goes on to show their pictures at a crime scene. It is also mentioned that it is admirable that the FBI allows them to work together as the unique team that they are.
Director Jenkins was the first to comment on the new problem. “Agent Booth whether the two of you are married or not, it is the public opinion that you are, the problem is that agents who are partners are not allowed to be married to each other and this could be a potential problem in the bureau.”
“Hold it a minute, the regulation is that only agents working for the FBI cannot be married partners but Dr. Brennan officially works for the Jeffersonian and is only a consultant and not an agent. So we have a loophole by which these two can continue to work together married or not.” Caroline interceded.
“Point taken, so that means Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth can still work together and we can try to forget this mess.” Dr. Banbridge said with a note of relief in his voice.
At that moment, Bones got out of her chair and removed her smock which had been covering the baby bump.
“Dr. Brennan, is that….are you…?” Sweets stammered. Caroline, Dr Banbridge and Director Jenkins just looked. Cam had a little grin.
“If you are asking if I have a roll in the stove then the answer is yes.”
Bones, it is a bun in the oven.” Booth corrected.
“Dr. Brennan so now you are pregnant but not when you were interviewed is that correct but you were pregnant when the interviewed aired?” Director Jenkins inquired.
“Yes.” Bones answered.
“So now the bureau is back to addressing the mystery of whether it’s a boy or a girl.” Director Jenkins quipped.
“I have a question. Dr. Brennan we need to have the name of your baby’s father because everyone is going to presume that it is Agent Booth.” Sweets asked.
“Sweets I am the father and there is no question about it.” Booth proclaimed.
“Back to the answer if it is a boy or a girl.” Director Jenkins reiterated.
Cam explained. “It is too early to tell yet. The best answer right now is the one that Dr. Brennan gave in the interview which is yes to all those emails.”
“Well then when is the baby due?” Dr. Banbridge asked.
“I am due in five more months and then we will know if it is a girl or a boy.” Brennan announced.
Over the next three months, Brennan was enjoying the thought of motherhood. She and Booth worked on preparing the nursery and they finally settled into just one apartment.
Brennan was having her seven month exam when her doctor asked about doing an ultrasound. The doctor did not want to alarm Dr. Brennan but there was something funny about the baby’s heartbeat.
Booth was with Bones as the doctor was doing the ultrasound exam. The doctor asked about if they wanted to know if it is a boy or a girl as she started the exam. As the doctor continued to view the screen, both Booth and Bones were anxious for the results. Finally the doctor turned to them and said. “Well we can’t tell the sex yet, because of the position of the babies.”
Booth was the first to react. “Babies, you mean there is more than one?”
“Yes, it looks like twins.”
Bones finally inquired. “Do they look all right?”
“The babies are both fine.” The doctor responded.
Over the next two months, as Bones was getting closer to her due date everyone was keeping an eye open for the first signs of labor. Even at the FBI there was a betting pool going on as to when and whether it is two boys, two girls or one of each.
As luck would have it, Brennan and Booth were interrogating a suspect when the first pain struck. Bones had grabbed Booth’s arm and was trying get through with the questioning but Booth would have none of that. He was more concerned about the woman he loved and his unborn babies then the person in the room. He quickly took her out of the room, sat her on a chair in the hall until the contraction passed. He quickly handed the suspects file to Charlie, another agent, and said he needed to take Dr. Brennan to the hospital. As Booth left the building with Bones, Charlie let the man running the betting pool know and he also called Cam at the Jeffersonian.
Throughout the afternoon and night while Bones was in labor, Booth never leaves her side. Early the next morning Bones was delivered two healthy babies. She is taken to her room where she falls asleep exhausted. Booth finally has a chance to go home and change quickly. He wants to be back at the hospital when Bones wakes up.
Booth was sitting in the hospital room watching Bones sleep when the nurse brings in the babies. The nurse gently wakes up Brennan and hands her the first baby. She then hands the second one to Booth. At that moment, Cam, Angela, Hodgins and Sweets enter the room. They ask the most important question of all. What are their names? Booth who is looking at the tiny little person in his arms looks up at Brennan and says. “Her name is Christine Brennan Booth after Bones’ mother.” And Brennan looking at Booth says “His name is going to be Henry Joseph Booth and Booth will call him Hank after his grandfather. To me he is going to be my little Angel.
He waited until she was asleep before he went in the bathroom to take a shower. His plane was scheduled to leave at 9:00 the next morning and it was already 2:00 am. He removed the rest of his clothes in the bathroom and took a long cool shower. As he came back into the bedroom dressed he noticed that Bones was no longer in bed but sitting in a chair looking out into the night. She had put on a bathrobe and was now covered.
“Bones what’s wrong?”
She looked over at Booth. He could see that she was upset.
“Booth, about what happened”
“Bones, you are a beautiful woman but you and I have something special. We are partners and partners take care of each other.”
“Booth you’re right as always. It is so nice to have someone you can trust and who is always there for you.” As she said this, she had left the chair and came over to Booth. She put her arms around him and rested her head on his shoulders as she has done numerous times in the past. He could smell the fresh scent of her hair as he rested his head against hers. She turned her face to look at him their lips were almost touching. He wanted to kiss her and take her, but he did not want to rush her because she does not like to be rushed. He was looking at her face when she said. “Booth you’re more than a partner to me. When you were in that coma I thought my world had stopped, I did not know what to do to bring you back. I felt alone without you. I have been alone since I was fifteen and I don’t ever want to feel like that again.”
“Bones I promise never to leave you. I will do anything for you even kill, you know that.”
“Booth, I know that, but I feel so empty inside like something is missing. I want to feel what other people feel when they love someone and they are loved by someone.”
Booth looked at her and could not restrain himself any longer because she had to know that she is loved even if she does not love him. “Bones, you are smart, talented and beautiful and I have to tell you truthfully that I am hopelessly in love with you.”
“Booth, does being in love make you feel light headed and giddy? Do you feel that any moment apart is an eternity? When the person you love enters a room does your heart feel like it has skipped a beat?”
“Bones you don’t analyze love you just feel it.”
“Booth, that’s how I feel about you.”
“So you love me.”
“Yes, Booth, if loving someone means that your whole world is that person.” When she said this, his lips touched hers in a soft and lingering kiss. He could feel her body moving against his and his desire increasing for her.
“Bones are you sure as I don’t want us to rush into this.”
“Booth I am never surer about anything and I think we have waited long enough.”
He then kissed her more firmly until her lips parted to accept his tongue. As his lips and tongue were exploring hers, she had moved her hands to undo his belt and unzip his fly. He had moved his hands to her shoulders and was removing the bathrobe and letting it slip to the floor. She had now moved her exploring hands to the back of his waist and was pushing his trousers down over his buttocks. As his pants fell to the floor, he stepped out of them; he lifted her up and carried her to the bed. As he laid her down, his hands moved along her waist to her panties where his hands moved inside to increase her arousal. She in turn had now removed his shirt and shorts. Her mouth was exploring his bare chest while her hands moved to bring him to full peak. By now both of them were fully naked and their bodies were a gleam of perspiration. At this point there was no going back, as he penetrated deep inside Bones emitted a low moan. Within moments they were in synchronization of movement ultimately to arrive at the crescendo together.
As they lay together exhausted, Bones whispered. “Booth”
“Yes, Bones.”
“I was completely irrational.”
“What do you mean?” He sat up and turned to look at her thinking she is now regretting this and not really in love with him.
“I was afraid to admit that I loved you because I did not know you loved me, but I should have told you anyway.” She then reached up and pulled his face to hers and kissed him in a way that let him know she loved him in no uncertain terms.
It did not take long before they were both intertwined with each other. At 6:00 am the phone rang to give them a wake up call but as they had never gone to sleep it was more of a reminder that they both needed to be someplace else, but that did not stop them from holding on to each other for another ten minutes.
“Booth you need to get to the airport and I need to get ready for the television interview.”
“Bones, do you want me to stay and go to the interview with you?”
“No Booth that’s OK. I’ll see you tonight, my flight is supposed to be in DC at 5:00 pm and I should get home by six.”
“I’ll pick up some Thai food and be there by seven.”
“Booth, don’t be late for your flight and I’ll see you tonight.” She watched him as he got dressed and just before he left he kissed her goodbye. She then went into the bathroom and got ready for her interview.
Later on the flight back to DC she was thinking how nice it would be to see Booth tonight. She got home a little after six and quickly showered again and changed into something more casual.
Booth arrived a few minutes before seven with the food as promised. She got two beers out of the refrigerator and they quietly ate dinner. After dinner Booth asked how her interview went because he remembered her first interviews were not that great.
“Booth it was very good, I even made the audience laugh. Why I don’t know. But she did ask some odd questions.”
“Like what?”
“She asked something about a boy or a girl, which I did not understand.”
“When is the interview scheduled to be shown?”
“According to them, it will be aired in ten weeks just before my book is released. They taped it in advance because I happened to be in Chicago this weekend.”
“Well Bones it’s getting late and you must be tired.”
“You’re right Booth; it has been a long weekend. We need to get some sleep; we can clean up the kitchen in the morning.”
Booth looked at her for a moment, not quite understanding what she meant as she walked to the bedroom.
“Booth aren’t you coming to bed?”
“Yes Bones” As he put the dishes in the sink. He then fully understood that he was staying the night.
Over the weeks they would sleep always together even when Booth had Parker. Parker was glad that Bones was his daddy’s girlfriend because now he has his own room at her apartment and a pool. If the one had to work late, the other would wait up. Eventually they each had half their clothes in each others apartment.
About the fifth week, Angela asked Brennan if there was something going on with her.
Brennan asked. “Why?”
“You look positively radiant. Are you seeing someone?”
Brennan could not lie to her best friend, so she said. “Yes.”
“Brennan what about Booth, does he know.”
“Yes he does.”
“I always thought the two of you would get together. Do you know if he is seeing anyone?”
“He is seeing someone.”
”Oh, is it serious for you?”
“Yes I think it is.”
Before Angela could ask any more questions, Brennan went to her office. Angela went to go tell Cam.
“Cam, Brennan is seeing someone and so is Booth. Do you know anything about it?”
“No Angela this is the first I heard, I thought Booth was in love with Dr. Brennan and now he is seeing someone and she’s OK with it?”
Angela just shrugged her shoulders and left the room.
Cam knew that Booth is usually very discreet about whom he is seeing so there is no point in asking him but if Dr. Brennan is OK with it she is not going to poke her nose around.
Later that night as Bones and Booth were lying in bed. She told him about what Angela asked and what she said.
“Bones, do you think she suspects?”
“I don’t think so; she looked disappointed for some reason.”
“Never mind, we just have to be careful. We don’t want Sweets to find out. If Angela and Cam find out, they can keep a secret, but we don’t want them to say anything and someone over hears.”
“You’re right.” Bones then turned out her light and Booth wrapped his arms around her. As they settled into their favorite sleeping positions, they quickly fell asleep.
Two days later there was a decaying corpse found near the Washington Monument and Brennan and Cam went to examine it. As they arrived at the scene, each of them went to exam the body. As Cam was pulling some of the clothes away to get a better look at the flesh left on the skin, Brennan was overcome by the smell. It took everything in her power not to throw up. Cam noticed Brennan’s discomfort and asked if she was alright.
“Sorry, it is just the smell that got to me.” I’ll be fine after the flesh is removed.
Cam thought it odd because Dr. Brennan was never bothered by the smells before. Maybe she is coming down with the flu.
The next morning after Booth had left for work. Bones was sick to her stomach and very light headed. When she finally got in the office, she needed to throw up again. Cam came in to check on her and asked whether she had the flu and needed to go home.
“No Cam, it’s alright. I’m just a little nauseated. It usually passes by noon.”
“How long has this been going on?”
“Oh, just for the last few days.”
Cam made note to watch her for the next couple of days.
Brennan managed to avoid answering anymore questions about her boyfriend for the next couple of weeks. Both she and Booth were keeping their relationship quiet.
They were both having coffee and Booth was having his usual slice of pie when Sweets joined them at their table to discuss some aspect of their recent case.
As they were talking, Brennan reached over and took a bite of Booth’s pie. Sweets saw this but said nothing until she took a second bite.
“I see Booth has finally convinced you to eat pie, Dr. Brennan.”
“No it is just that it that I wanted to try a bite to see how it tasted.” She answered as she took another bite.
“See Bones, I told you you’d like it.”
Booth ordered another slice of pie while he and Sweets discussed his profile on the latest case. As soon as the pie arrived, Bones devoured the whole slice of pie.
Booth looked at her in amazement and smiled. “Bones do you want another slice?”
Bones could not answer at first because her mouth was full of pie but she did shake her head yes.
Sweets was smiling as she consumed the third slice. He then asked her about her new book.
“Dr. Brennan isn’t your new book coming out next week and isn’t your interview with Oprah on this week?”
“Yes my book is out next week but I don’t know the exact date they will show the interview.” She answered.
Sweets then excused himself as he had something to discuss with Cam. Cam had asked him to come to her office because she had something to talk to him about.
“What is it that you wanted?” Sweets said as he entered the office.
“Oh Dr. Sweets, have you noticed anything strained between Booth and Dr. Brennan?”
“No, they seem to be their usual selves. In fact today Booth finally got Dr. Brennan to eat pie. Why do you ask?”
“Well, Angela found out that Dr. Brennan is seeing someone and Booth knows about it. I am just concerned about their working relationship. You said that Dr. Brennan ate pie? Was it just a bite?”
“No, she ate three slices.”
“That is not like her.” Cam said as she made another mental note. She called Angela into her office as soon as Sweets left.
“Angela I think there is something wrong with Dr. Brennan.”
“Why do you think that?”
“Well she has been vomiting from the smell of a dead body which is not like her and now Sweets is telling me she has eaten three slices of pie.”
“Brennan does not like pie. Another thing, have you noticed she seems to have a glow lately?”
“Angela, I am going to ask for some specimens because of some exam that needs to be done and I want you to help me with this.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“When I ask Dr. Brennan for hers you will tell her that you have already given me yours so that she does not suspect anything.”
The next morning, Cam approached Dr. Brennan and said she needed some samples for a test. Dr. Brennan started to ask about the test when Angela walked in and let her know she had already done hers. She then gave the samples to Cam with no further concern.
As Cam and Angela left the room, Angela asked “How long will this test take?”
“I should have the results by Monday.”
Friday night Sweets was sitting with Daisy who had been taping Oprah all week looking for Dr. Brennan’s interview. They had finally reached the last show of the week when they saw that this was where her interview was shown. They sat there and watched and after the interview, Sweets quickly called Cam and asked her had she seen Dr. Brennan’s interview. Cam said she had missed it.
“Well can we meet at the Jeffersonian tomorrow because there is going to be some repercussions about it and I think you should be prepared.”
The next morning Sweets was in Cam’s office showing her the tape. Cam sat there watching and after it was over she looked at Sweets. She asked him.
“Did I just hear right. Did she say she is having a baby?”
Daisy who was with Sweets chimed in saying in her squeal little voice. “Don’t you think that’s wonderful?”
Cam just looked at her. She then picked up the phone to call Angela and asked her to come in to see this tape.
Angela showed up with Hodgins and they both sat there and looked at the tape. Angela just had her mouth open and Hodgins had a grin on his face.
Cam looked at everyone in the room and asked what they all thought.
Hodgins was the first to answer when he said. “I think we are all going to be aunts and uncles.”
Angela gave him a look and said. “You all know how Brennan talks she may not have meant she is really pregnant but is only planning on having a kid someday.”
Cam responded. “What about the other comment?”
Sweets finally said. “What we need is both Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth to see this tape and get an explanation. I suggest that I call them and ask them both to come over here tomorrow so that we can be prepared for any problems that may come up.”
Everyone agreed and as they all left the office, Angela hung back to ask Cam.
“Are you testing to see if she is pregnant?”
“Yes because if she is then she will have to let Booth know and that could put more of a strain on their working relationship.”
That night Sweets called Booth and asked him to come into the office because he needed to alert him about a certain matter. He then called Dr. Brennan and asked her as well. What Sweets did not know is that they were both in Booth’s apartment relaxing after a long week. They looked at each other and discussed what could Sweets be concerned about.
“Booth you don’t think he knows about us, do you?”
“Bones, I don’t care if he does because I will always be with you no matter what happens.”
“Booth, have I told you I love you today.” She said as she put her arms around his neck and kissed him seductively.
He wrapped his arms around her and lifted her up while they were still kissing and carried her to the bedroom.
The next morning they arrived at the Jeffersonian and went to Cam’s office where Sweets had asked them to meet him. Cam and Sweets were already there.
Shortly after they arrived, Angela and Hodgins joined the group.
Cam was the one who asked first. “Dr. Brennan have you seen your interview on Oprah?”
“No, I did not know when they were going to show it. It was supposed to have been this week sometime.”
“Well there were some statements made and some answers that were a little unusual.” Sweets stated.
“Like what? I thought I answered the questions accurately, but it has been over ten weeks since the interview.” Bones responded.
“I think the best thing is to show the interview so Dr. Brennan can hear the entire interview and what was shown on television.” Cam said.
They all took a seat around the screen to view the interview. Bones sat on the sofa next to Booth with everyone else either sitting on a chair or just standing as the show played.”
They watched as the show opened and Oprah came out to say.
“My next guest is the leading forensic anthropologist in the country and a famous mystery writer. She has been involved in solving many unusual murder cases over the years along with her husband Special Agent Seeley Booth of the FBI, who she refers to as her partner. Please welcome Dr. Temperance Brennan.”
Applause as Brennan walks on stage and sits down next to Oprah, who begins the interview.
“I understand Dr. Brennan that you helped solve a fifteen year old murder in two days while visiting for your class reunion.”
“Yes I had come here to visit with one of my teachers and with the help of my partner, we figured out who the killer was.”
“Your partner being Agent Booth was here with you at your reunion?”
“Yes.” Long pause.
“You also have a new book coming out next week. This book was very intriguing and suspenseful. I have given a copy to every person in the audience today.” Applause
“I recommend everyone should go out a get a copy who likes a good murder mystery. Tell me Dr. Brennan do you have anything in the works right now.”
“I usually try to write only one book at a time.” There was another long pause before the next question.
“I recall one of your first interviews where you had said that you were never going to have any children, has that changed?”
“Yes I am going to have a baby.”
Applause
“Does your partner know?”
“Of course, he was there at conception.”
Laughter comes from the audience.
“Is it a boy or a girl?”
“Yes.”
“Now, we know you why you’re a great mystery writer. Thank you very much for coming today and we need to break for a commercial.” After the commercial break Oprah said.
“I want to thank Dr. Brennan for letting us in on her next project, with her partner. She left us with a mystery to solve and I believe we should all ask the FBI to find out if it is a boy or a girl. What do you think audience?”
Applause
Everyone looked at Brennan except Booth who just leaning back on the couch with his head back looking at the ceiling. He knew he should never leave Bones alone for an interview. It is the way she answers questions directly that people get the wrong interpretations.
“What about the statement she made in the beginning that Booth is your husband?” Sweets asked. .
“It may have been because Booth and she were undercover as husband and wife at the reunion to catch a killer that is why Oprah got that idea.” Hodgins said.
“Then why did you not correct her when you came on stage?” Cam asked.
Brennan explained that she was just coming out of the waiting room to come on stage and did not hear the full introduction; she only heard her name being announced as she walked on stage.
“All right we can explain that but what about what you said about going to have a baby?” Cam questioned.
“You all know that I have decided to have a baby someday. I was just saying that I am going future tense not actually having one. What was wrong with that?”
Booth explained to Bones. “It sounded to most people as if you were already having a baby and not just planning one in the future.”
“Oh.” Brennan uttered.
Angela asked. “What about the conception statement?”
Everyone was waiting for this answer even Booth.
“Sweets you remember I conceived the idea of a baby in your office and Booth was there. I don’t see what the problem is.”
Booth again explains to Bones. The audience thought she meant the other definition of conception.
“Is that why she asked me if it was a boy or a girl?”
“Yes, Bones.” Booth answered.
“Is that why you said yes to that question?” Angela asked.
“A baby can only be a boy or a girl.” Brennan responded.
“Did you get to hear what was said after the commercial break? Because what if someone actually asks the FBI to find out if it is a boy or a girl.” Hodgins said.
Brennan let them all know that while they cut the taping for the commercial break, Brennan had left the studio to catch her plane back to DC and did not hear what Oprah had said to the audience after the break.
“So you are not pregnant, Sweetie.” Angela sighed.
“Angela there is no way I could have been pregnant when I did that interview. You know that I have not had sex in quite some time before the reunion.” Brennan said in a matter of fact way.
“Then you have had sex since then.” Angela said looking at her closely.
“Well yes.”
“When was the last time you had sex?” Angela asked.
Booth interrupted by saying. “I don’t think we need to know the answer.”
“That’s all right Booth. I had very satisfying sex this morning, if you need to know.” Bones answered
Booth just rolled his head and thought we don’t need to go into details here.
Sweets saw Booth roll his head and asked. “Does it bother you that Dr. Brennan is having sex with someone?”
“No, not at all I’m happy she enjoyed it this morning.” Booth answered with a sly smile.
“I enjoyed it last night too Booth.” Bones added with a grin.
Cam noticed it first and she looked at Angela to see if she saw it too. Angela nodded at Cam and nudged Hodgins. Hodgins looked at Angela to see why she poked him and when Angela tilted her head toward Booth and Brennan he got the message.
“Well as long as there are no problems between you two. We all know that there was some confusion about the questions and answers that can be easily explained. So we’ll just leave it alone for now.” Sweets, had turned to leave the room and had missed all of the looks.
As Booth and Brennan got ready to leave the room, Cam said. “Hold it you two; you are not getting away that easily.”
“What is it Cam?” Booth asked.
“You know what it is, big guy.”
“Come on Sweetie, we figured it out. You are not going out with anyone other than Booth. And Booth you don’t have any other girlfriend other than Brennan. Admit it. Our lips are sealed.”
Booth and Bones looked at each other before they answered together. “You’re right, but don’t let Sweets know.”
“When did you finally realize that Booth was the one for you, Sweetie?”
“Angela it was on the last night of the reunion when he stayed to help me face those women.”
Hodgins gave Booth a slap on his back and said. “Congratulations, your secret is safe with me.”
“Dr. Brennan I have to confess that I did think you were pregnant and that is why I needed the specimen. I hope you understand.” Cam said.
“Sweetie I also thought so too. Especially when it looked like you had morning sickness and weird cravings for pie.” Angela added.
Brennan asked. “I’m sure the test showed negative. I do understand. You did it because you had concerns.”
“I haven’t looked at the results yet, they are on my desk.” Cam answered as she walked to her desk.
Cam looked at the test results; she showed it to Angela and Hodgins. Hodgins could not hold back when he uttered. “Agent Booth I don’t think your secret will be safe for long.”
Brennan quickly went to the desk to look at the results and said. “This can’t be right.”
“Bones what does it show?”
“Booth it shows that I am knocked over.”
“Bones, that is knocked up and how did this happen?”
Everyone looked at Booth and did not say anything until Hodgins quipped. “Do I need to explain the birds and the bees to you?”
Angela was the first to ask the all important question. “Sweetie, the test could be wrong. When did you have your last cycle?”
Brennan thought for a moment and answered. “I remember exactly. It was two weeks before the class reunion.”
“That was over twelve weeks ago. I think you are a little late and the test is a lot correct.” Cam added.
She went on to say. “What we need now is a way to keep this quiet until the right time.”
Booth meanwhile had pulled Brennan close to him and was telling her how beautiful she looked and that she is going to make a great mother.
“Dr. Brennan I will get the vitamins you should be taking, Angela will keep an eye out for you because pretty soon, you will get hormonal as your body changes. Hodgins you will keep an ear out if anyone asks about her.” Cam said to them.
“What do you want me to do, Cam?” Booth asked.
“You’ve done enough already.” She retorted, but then she recanted and said. “Watch her in the field don’t let her over do it especially for the next couple of months.”
“Cam, do you think anything will result from that interview.” Bones asked.
“Let’s hope not.” Cam answered.
A few days later, Booth was watching Bones in the shower when he noticed that she no longer had a flat stomach but she now had a little bump. He could not help himself from putting his hand over it and giving her a gentle hug.
It was a little over three weeks later, when Booth was summoned to the conference room by Director Jenkins, the head of the FBI. In addition there was Caroline, the FBI lawyer, Sweets, Cam, Dr. Banbridge, head of the Jeffersonian, and Bones.
Director Jenkins started the meeting off with by saying. “It has come to the attention of this department that Agent Booth and his partner Dr. Brennan have been secretly married and are now expecting a child. It is the policy of this agency that partners cannot be married to each other. Agent Booth what do you have to say?”
“Dr. Brennan and I are not married.” Booth answered.
“It was announced on Oprah.” Director Jenkins shot back.
“It was incorrect information.” Sweets interjected and he then explained the misconception.
“Well if they are not really married perhaps someone could explain why we have received over thirty copies of marriage licenses showing their marriage. The agency has received the copies from small little towns all over New England and one was from Las Vegas, Nevada.” Director Jenkins stated.
“It sounds like these licenses are from people who want to take credit for the marriage and are all phony.” Caroline offered.
“I don’t believe one has to be married to prove one’s commitment.” Bones added.
“What about the other questions?” Director Jenkins asked.
Sweets went on to explain about how Dr. Brennan answered the other questions and how the answers were misunderstood.
“Do you two know how many emails and phone calls this agency has received in the past three weeks asking if it is a boy or a girl? In addition, the mail department has been flooded with letters and baby gifts.
Dr. Banbridge and I have decided that we are going to split up your partnership. Dr. Brennan you will be assigned a new partner and Agent Booth you will work alone for now.” Director Jenkins said.
“I will not work with any other FBI agent. I will only work with Booth.” Bones said emphatically.
“Dr. Brennan, as head of the Jeffersonian, it is up to me when you are assigned to the FBI and Director Jenkins will decide who you will be assigned to. You have no choice in the matter.” Dr. Banbridge insisted.
“Then I will no longer work for the Jeffersonian. It is stated in my contract that if and when I decide I can terminate my association with the Jeffersonian. As you are aware I am far greater contribution to the prestige of the institution than you are.”
“Dr. Brennan are you threatening to quit?” Dr. Banbridge uttered
“No I am stating a fact.”
At that moment a clerk entered the room and informed Director Jenkins that he needed to see the latest copy of People magazine. He handed him a copy and placed additional copies on the table for the others to look at.
On the cover there was a mention of couples who work together for the public benefit with the names of Bill and Melinda Gates, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth listed. Inside the article showed how each of the couples was benefiting the public. Bill and Melinda Gates with their foundation for scholarships, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for their world causes and how Dr Brennan with her husband Agent Seeley Booth work together is solving unusual and bizarre murders not only in DC but around the country and abroad. Director Jenkins was the first to comment on the new problem. “Agent Booth whether the two of you are married or not, it is the public opinion that you are, the problem is that agents who are partners are not allowed to be married to each other and this could be a potential problem in the bureau.”
“Hold it a minute, the regulation is that only agents working for the FBI cannot be married partners but Dr. Brennan officially works for the Jeffersonian and is only a consultant and not an agent. So we have a loophole by which these two can continue to work together married or not.” Caroline interceded.
“Point taken, so that means Dr. Brennan and Agent Booth can still work together and we can try to forget this mess.” Dr. Banbridge said with a note of relief in his voice.
At that moment, Bones got out of her chair and removed her smock which had been covering the baby bump.
“Dr. Brennan, is that….are you…?” Sweets stammered. Caroline, Dr Banbridge and Director Jenkins just looked. Cam had a little grin.
“If you are asking if I have a roll in the stove then the answer is yes.”
Bones, it is a bun in the oven.” Booth corrected.
“Dr. Brennan so now you are pregnant but not when you were interviewed is that correct but you were pregnant when the interviewed aired?” Director Jenkins inquired.
“Yes.” Bones answered.
“So now the bureau is back to addressing the mystery of whether it’s a boy or a girl.” Director Jenkins quipped.
“I have a question. Dr. Brennan we need to have the name of your baby’s father because everyone is going to presume that it is Agent Booth.” Sweets asked.
“Sweets I am the father and there is no question about it.” Booth proclaimed.
“Back to the answer if it is a boy or a girl.” Director Jenkins reiterated.
Cam explained. “It is too early to tell yet. The best answer right now is the one that Dr. Brennan gave in the interview which is yes to all those emails.”
“Well then when is the baby due?” Dr. Banbridge asked.
“I am due in five more months and then we will know if it is a girl or a boy.” Brennan announced.
Over the next three months, Brennan was enjoying the thought of motherhood. She and Booth worked on preparing the nursery and they finally settled into just one apartment.
Brennan was having her seven month exam when her doctor asked about doing an ultrasound. The doctor did not want to alarm Dr. Brennan but there was something funny about the baby’s heartbeat.
Booth was with Bones as the doctor was doing the ultrasound exam. The doctor asked about if they wanted to know if it is a boy or a girl as she started the exam. As the doctor continued to view the screen, both Booth and Bones were anxious for the results. Finally the doctor turned to them and said. “Well we can’t tell the sex yet, because of the position of the babies.”
Booth was the first to react. “Babies, you mean there is more than one?”
“Yes, it looks like twins.”
Bones finally inquired. “Do they look all right?”
“The babies are both fine.” The doctor responded.
Over the next two months, as Bones was getting closer to her due date everyone was keeping an eye open for the first signs of labor. Even at the FBI there was a betting pool going on as to when and whether it is two boys, two girls or one of each.
As luck would have it, Brennan and Booth were interrogating a suspect when the first pain struck. Bones had grabbed Booth’s arm and was trying get through with the questioning but Booth would have none of that. He was more concerned about the woman he loved and his unborn babies then the person in the room. He quickly took her out of the room, sat her on a chair in the hall until the contraction passed. He quickly handed the suspects file to Charlie, another agent, and said he needed to take Dr. Brennan to the hospital. As Booth left the building with Bones, Charlie let the man running the betting pool know and he also called Cam at the Jeffersonian.
Throughout the afternoon and night while Bones was in labor, Booth never leaves her side. Early the next morning Bones was delivered two healthy babies. She is taken to her room where she falls asleep exhausted. Booth finally has a chance to go home and change quickly. He wants to be back at the hospital when Bones wakes up.
Booth was sitting in the hospital room watching Bones sleep when the nurse brings in the babies. The nurse gently wakes up Brennan and hands her the first baby. She then hands the second one to Booth. At that moment, Cam, Angela, Hodgins and Sweets enter the room. They ask the most important question of all. What are their names? Booth who is looking at the tiny little person in his arms looks up at Brennan and says. “Her name is Christine Brennan Booth after Bones’ mother.” And Brennan looking at Booth says “His name is going to be Henry Joseph Booth and Booth will call him Hank after his grandfather. To me he is going to be my little Angel.
