I am very sorry for the long delay for the 20-11, it has been an extremely difficult couple of months at uni, with big loads of coursework and exams so its taken me a while to get down to it.
As many of you know we created a forum page in which Fanpopper’s listed their top 20 Buffyverse characters. The results were tallied and the overall result was I have to admit different to what I imagined. I hope you enjoy the read, and please this is a collective of favourite characters not my own so no blaming me if your favourite character is not number 1.

20. Angelus
Angelus, meaning angel in Latin was the name given to the vampire with the face of an angel. He is probably better known as Angel’s evil half. Angelus was not only evil but he was cruel as well, we assume that the two would go hand in hand but there was something different about Angelus, he enjoyed the main and the torture. Angelus drove the young woman Drusilla insane before turning her into a vampire. He was cured by a gypsy tribe for killing the favourite daughter of the Kalderash Gypsy Clan. This led to his soul being restored and with that his conscious. He did not return as Angelus until Season 2 of Buffy when Buffy and Angel consummated their love leading to Angel experiencing a moment of perfect happiness. During his phase in Sunnydale as Angelus he rejoins his old allies Drusilla and Spike and relishes in tormenting Buffy and the Scooby Gang. One of the things he did was murder Jenny Calender, this served two purposes, not only did it reduce the risk of his soul being retuned but it also tormented Giles and subsequently Buffy. His soul was restored at the end of the season but a moment too late and Angel was sent to hell. Angelus then did not return until Angel season 4 where he was briefly brought back to help Angel Investigations stop The Beast but before he can do too much damage he is re-ensouled by Faith and Willow.
19. Allen Francis Doyle (Doyle)
Although his presence on the show was not for very long, he is still remembered fondly. Doyle was one of the original members of Angel Investigations along with Angel and Cordelia Chase. He was half human and half Brachan demon who received visions from The Powers That Be. Doyle quickly fell in love with Cordy but never really made a move on her in fear of her rejection his demonic side. He was married, before we met him on the show, to Harriet who returned with her fiancé (a demon named Richard) who wished to eat Doyle’s brains to ensure a happy marriage for him and Harriet. Doyle then went onto to sacrifice his life in order to save mankind and half breed demonic from the ‘pure’ demonic clan known as The Scourge. Before he gave his life his expressed his feelings to Cordy with a kiss, which went on to pass his power of visions to her.
18. Dawn Summers
When we first meet Dawn she is introduced as Buffy’s little sister. This had a lot of fans under confusion as we did not meet Dawn until season 5 and up until this point Buffy was an only child. We later then go on to discover that she is in-fact known as The Key. The Key was a ball of energy until a group of monks made it into human form and sent it to the slayer to protect with her life from the Goddess Glory. Glory wanted to use the key to open up portals to alternate dimensions. In the season 5 finale Dawn’s blood is spilt and the portals were opened, but due to Buffy sharing the same blood she sacrificed her life so that Dawn could stay alive. As the show continued we see Dawn’s character grow, she makes a couple of mistakes from wishing with a vengeance demon which resulted in everyone being trapped in the summer household, to performing an exorcism to save her mother’s sprit from a demon. In the end she learns from Xander how to deal with being the normal one, after believing that she could have been a potential slayer.
17. Andrew Wells
Andrew only joined us in season 6 even though hic character had lived in Sunnydale his whole life, and we ha already met his brother back in season 3 (Tucker Wells). When we met him he was part of an ‘evil’ trio which consisted off a new character Warren and an old Sunnydale High alum Jonathon. They were not considered very dangerous, they were also known as the three geeks and mainly were there for comic value. This was however started getting out of hand when Warren started to seek for more power and Jonathon just wanted to remain having fun, this led to Andrew being a middle man between the two but being driven by Warren more than himself at times. When Warren accidentally kills Tara it send Willow into a vengeful state, she kills Warren and vows to kill Jonathon and Andrew they soon after a few hiccups leave town. They do return though from Mexico in the season 7 premiere. At this point we see Andrew being driven by The First who is using Warren’s face. He makes Andrew kill Jonathon and with his blood open the seal to the hell mouth. He is soon discovered back in town and becomes the Scooby Gang’s hostage and later on in the season becomes of them and helps them in the final battle. Since the destruction of Sunnydale Andrew has been training to become a watcher under the leadership of Giles. He appears in season 5 of Angel when Angel and Spike come looking for Buffy and instead find Andrew.
16. Darla
Darla one of the members of The Fanged Four along with Angelus, Drusilla and Spike, she was Angelus’s sire, therefore in a sense the creator of the group. Before that however she was a member of the Oder of Aurelius. She was sired by The Master in the late 16th century and was given the name Darla meaning ‘Dear One’. Nothing much is known about her from then until in the 17th Century when she sires Angelus. At that point she had become lonely and was looking for a companion to wreak havoc over Eurpoe with. She lured a foolishly drunk young man named Liam into a barn and created one of the most vicious vampires known. After a couple of years of causing mayhem Darla introduced Angelus to her sire The Master, however Angelus had no interest in following The Order of Aurelius and so Darla choose her boy over her sire. Darla and Angelus continued to roam Europe torturing families, running away from the notorious vampire hunter Holtz after killing his family and building their family. Then during The Boxer Rebellion while Spike killed his first slayer Darla lost her boy, Angelus was given a soul shortly before and was no longer able to kill innocent. Darla then goes to return to The Master along with Drusilla and Spike who eventually part ways. The next we hear of Darla is when she arrives in Sunnydale (Buffy Season 1) alongside The Master and other strong vampires. Darla laid low until she devised a plan to get back at Angel and kill the slayer. This consisted of attacking Buffy’s mum Joyce and in so framing Angel so Buffy would attack Angel, however this turned against Darla when Angel killed her to save Buffy. Three years pass before we see Darla again. At this point Angel had moved to L.A. Darla was resurrected by Wolfram and Hart to mess with Angel’s mind. During this time she became close to one of the lawyers Lindsey who convinced her to live out her years as human, this was until Wolfram and Hart brought Drusilla in to sire Darla. After a killing spree, nearly being killed by Angel and hiding out in Lindsey apartment her and Angel have sex. After which she runs away, but then returns a year later heavily pregnant with Angel’s son. At this point Holtz also arrives, having been frozen in time. With this threat and the threat Darla would have on the baby when born she stakes herself during the birth so that the child could be safe.
15. Tara McClay
Tara was first introduced in Season 4 as a part of a wiccan group that Willow joins in college. After realising that the rest of the group are actually interested in magic but Willow was, Tara goes to seek out Willow to practice magic with her. After casting their first spell together they continue playing around and become closer. As the season goes on it is clear that a romantic connection evolves. This is put to the test when Willows past love Oz returns from his spiritual journey to control his inner wolf. It is Oz who first realises their connection by smelling Willow on Tara, after a bit of a wolf incident Willow eventually choose Tara. Not much is known about Tara and her background until Season 5, her family comes to visit. From this visit we learn that Tara is a supposed demon as all women in their family are. This matter is clear however when Spike punches her, when he feels the Scooby gang realise she is not a demon and send her family away. Tara never really plays a main role in the gang but is there for Buffy as an outsider for her to confide in. At the end of season 5 Tara’s brain is drained by Glory the goddess and thus turns her into a mentally disabled person until Glory is killed and Willow cures her. Throughout season 6 she plays the same role as she did the previous season, however with Willows sudden magic junkie Tara ends things between them, Willow learns to control her obsession and wins Tara back, however just as they reconcile Tara is hit by a stray bullet and dies in Willow arms sending Willowing into a rage of black magic.
14. Winifred ‘Fred’ Burkle
Fred lived a simple life growing up in a small town in Texas, it wasn’t until she craved for the big city LA where anything really happened to her. Fred was a Physicist who worked at a Public Library. One day whilst stacking book she found an interesting one read the text aloud and was sucked into a demon dimension called Pylea (Lorne’s home dimension). There she lived as a ‘cow’ or slave as better known for five years until after a couple of fights and Cordy being made queen Angel Investigation saved Fred and brought her back to LA where she became part of the team. Within the team it took her a while to find her place but her knowledge in maths and physics makes her a brilliant strategist. Fred develops a romantic relationship with Gunn with ultimately ends after Gunn kill someone that Fred intended to kill so that Fred wouldn’t be ruined. Wesley had also developed feelings for her but does not really act on them until season 5. When the team moves to Wolfram and Hart Fred is given her own laboratory with an assistant called Knox whom she develops a crush on until she realises Wesley’s feeling and ultimately ends up with him (this takes a good part of the season though). Fred also throughout Season 5 strikes a friendship with Spike, as she spends the whole first part of the season trying to make him corporal. However near the end of the season Fred breathe in some ancient dust/air. This later is found out to be the essence of Illyria one of The Old Ones. Illyria consumes Fred’s body and Fred’s soul is destroyed in the process. Illyria however can still take on Fred’s form and memories at will.
13. Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
We first meet Wesley in season 3 of Buffy where he is sent as Giles’s replacement watcher for Buffy and Faith. However both slayers do not really listen to him and by the end of the season Faith is a rouge slayer and Buffy quits the council, due to this he is fired and becomes a rogue demon hunter. We next meet Wesley in LA on Angel during the second half of season 1, with already being aquatinted with both Angel and Cordy it doesn’t take Wesley long to join forces with them. During his first year Faith is hired by Wolfram and Hart to assassinate Angel, during her attempts she decides to torture Wesley, her former watcher. Wesley grows to loathe Faith but still does the right thing by handing her over to |Angel instead of his fellow watcher colleagues. Later on during season 2 when Angel turn to darkness and turns his back on the team Wesley is appointed their leader. During this time Wesley gets shot saving Gunn and ends up in a wheelchair for a short time. When the group joins back together everyone including Angel appoints Wesley as the leader, this takes Wesley time to get used to as he felt inferior to Angel, this is due to his fathers constant berating at him. During season 3 Wesley ends up kidnapping Angel’s son Connor after reading a prophecy saying ‘the father will kill the son’, handing Connor over to Holtz, having his throat slit, being alienated from Angel investigations and starting up a sexual relationship with Lilah Morgan. In the beginning of season 4 Wesley rescues Angel from the watery grave that Connor had put him in (Connor now being a grown man after being brought up in a demon dimension). Wesley is then eventually again part of the team and they defeat the beast and by doing thins he brought back Angelus and Faith. During season 5 we Wesley heads his own department at Wolfram and Hart, Kill a cyborg version of his father (after he threatened to kill Fred) and eventually got together with Fred. However this did not last long as she was taken over by Illyria. Wesley then sunk into a state of alcoholism and becoming obsessed with how to control Illyria, eventually he ’house trains her’ and she battles for the team. Wesley however ends up dying in the finale whilst killing the wizard Cyvus Veil, and he dies in the arms of Fred (Illyria created the illusion).
12. Lorne ‘The Host’
Lorne first appeared in the second season of Angel as the friendly host/ owner of Caritas a Karaoke bar. He originated from a dimension called Pylea, he happened onto earth through a portal he stumbled upon and landed in the space where he started Caritas. At the end of season 2 the gang end up visiting Pylea , or in Lorne’s case revisiting, where Angel and the gang meet his family and find out his real name is Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan. When he first met the gang he was only really used to read people, when people sing Lorne can read their aura. As time went on he became useful to the gang and eventually became one of them. Not only can he read peoples aura’s, he also has a deafening singing voice when he reaches certain high notes, and on Pylea if his head is chopped and his body is not mutilated then he is able to remain alive. After his club Caritas is destroyed by Gunn’s old gang and by Holtz he becomes a permanent member of the gang. When Angel goes missing (the space between season 3 and 4), Lorne’s goes to Las Vegas and becomes one of their main attractions, but had to be rescued out of that by the gang when they discovered that he was being forced to steal peoples auras. When they take over Wolfram and Hart Lorne is put in charge of the Entertainment division. This section of the company he enjoys working very much, however finds that the rest of the team do not take his department as seriously as he does. Whilst working there he feels himself slowing starting to loose his joy, partly responsible for this is Fred’s sudden death, and so in the season finale after his last job (shooting Lindsey) he leaves the group.
11. Alexander ‘Xander’ Harris
Xander grew up his whole life in Sunnydale, California and hung out with his best friends Willow and Jessie. His whole life changed however when Buffy Summers came to Sunnydale. We have known Xander since the beginning of season 1, he was the first to find out about Buffy’s powers after overhearing her, and after their friend is captured by vampires Xander, Willow and Giles form together to help Buffy and continue this and eventually become the Scooby gang. Throughout season 1 and early season 2 we watch Xander struggle with his feelings towards Buffy . We also watch him not only become possessed by a hyena but also become a ‘demon magnet’ by being preyed on by a she mantis and becoming the emotional attachment for a mummy. In season 2 Xander’s enters his first serious relationship with his complete opposite, popular rich girl, Cordelia. This lasted until the middle of season 3 (so about a year) when Xander is caught kissing Willow passionately after being held hostage by Spike. Xander’s storyliens have been mopre for comic relief but throughout season 3 it is poked at for an entire episode where Xander is considered a ‘Zeppo’. other key moments in his high school life are being on the swim team, loosing his virginity to Faith and helping save the Sunnydale students at their graduation by using his army training to lead the student in war against the mayor. In season 4 he starts a more adult relationship with ex demon Anya, who was his date to the prom. He again feels out of place in this season because he is the only one of the Scoobys (apart from Giles) that is not at college. He has a various number of job throughout the season including barman and ice cream man. He also (against his won will) becomes roomies with a ‘defanged’ Spike. In season 5 he becomes more of the heart of the team and faces various challenges from being Draculas man slave and being forced to choose between Will and Anya as to who should live. At the end of the season he proposes to Anya. However as the time comes close to his wedding to Anya he starts to have doubts and in the end does not make it and abandons her at the altar. When willow is turned bad, towards the end of season 6, because of Tara’s death it is Xander who saves the day by reminding Willow of their connection and friendship. In season 7 he becomes a lot more of a male role model, even if it is to a house full of young woman. He helps Dawn to realise that she does not need to be a slayer to be important to the group, and he also gets his eye pulled out by Caleb in the line for duty. He spends the whole season trying to make it up to Anya, however she is killed in the season finale. Since Sunnydale Xander took a leave from the Scooby’s and hunted down Dracula and became his man slave again for a time. When Buffy and co came to rescue him , it took Dracula to release him and send him with them. Since that time he has continued to help out the slayer world by taking on watcher like duties.

Wesley however ends up dying in the finale whilst killing the wizard Cyvus Veil, and he dies in the arms of Fred (Illyria created the illusion).
12. Lorne ‘The Host’
Lorne
Lorne first appeared in the second season of Angel as the friendly host/ owner of Caritas a Karaoke bar. He originated from a dimension called Pylea, he happened onto earth through a portal he stumbled upon and landed in the space where he started Caritas. At the end of season 2 the gang end up visiting Pylea , or in Lorne’s case revisiting, where Angel and the gang meet his family and find out his real name is Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan. When he first met the gang he was only really used to read people, when people sing Lorne can read their aura. As time went on he became useful to the gang and eventually became one of them. Not only can he read peoples aura’s, he also has a deafening singing voice when he reaches certain high notes, and on Pylea if his head is chopped and his body is not mutilated then he is able to remain alive. After his club Caritas is destroyed by Gunn’s old gang and by Holtz he becomes a permanent member of the gang. When Angel goes missing (the space between season 3 and 4), Lorne’s goes to Las Vegas and becomes one of their main attractions, but had to be rescued out of that by the gang when they discovered that he was being forced to steal peoples auras. When they take over Wolfram and Hart Lorne is put in charge of the Entertainment division. This section of the company he enjoys working very much, however finds that the rest of the team do not take his department as seriously as he does. Whilst working there he feels himself slowing starting to loose his joy, partly responsible for this is Fred’s sudden death, and so in the season finale after his last job (shooting Lindsey) he leaves the group.
11. Alexander ‘Xander’ Harris
Xander
Xander grew up his whole life in Sunnydale, California and hung out with his best friends Willow and Jessie. His whole life changed however when Buffy Summers came to Sunnydale. We have known Xander since the beginning of season 1, he was the first to find out about Buffy’s powers after overhearing her, and after their friend is captured by vampires Xander, Willow and Giles form together to help Buffy and continue this and eventually become the Scooby gang. Throughout season 1 and early season 2 we watch Xander struggle with his feelings towards Buffy . We also watch him not only become possessed by a hyena but also become a ‘demon magnet’ by being preyed on by a she mantis and becoming the emotional attachment for a mummy. In season 2 Xander’s enters his first serious relationship with his complete opposite, popular rich girl, Cordelia. This lasted until the middle of season 3 (so about a year) when Xander is caught kissing Willow passionately after being held hostage by Spike. Xander’s storyliens have been mopre for comic relief but throughout season 3 it is poked at for an entire episode where Xander is considered a ‘Zeppo’. other key moments in his high school life are being on the swim team, loosing his virginity to Faith and helping save the Sunnydale students at their graduation by using his army training to lead the student in war against the mayor. In season 4 he starts a more adult relationship with ex demon Anya, who was his date to the prom. He again feels out of place in this season because he is the only one of the Scoobys (apart from Giles) that is not at college. He has a various number of job throughout the season including barman and ice cream man. He also (against his won will) becomes roomies with a ‘defanged’ Spike. In season 5 he becomes more of the heart of the team and faces various challenges from being Draculas man slave and being forced to choose between Will and Anya as to who should live. At the end of the season he proposes to Anya. However as the time comes close to his wedding to Anya he starts to have doubts and in the end does not make it and abandons her at the altar. When willow is turned bad, towards the end of season 6, because of Tara’s death it is Xander who saves the day by reminding Willow of their connection and friendship. In season 7 he becomes a lot more of a male role model, even if it is to a house full of young woman. He helps Dawn to realise that she does not need to be a slayer to be important to the group, and he also gets his eye pulled out by Caleb in the line for duty. He spends the whole season trying to make it up to Anya, however she is killed in the season finale. Since Sunnydale Xander took a leave from the Scooby’s and hunted down Dracula and became his man slave again for a time. When Buffy and co came to rescue him , it took Dracula to release him and send him with them. Since that time he has continued to help out the slayer world by taking on watcher like duties.
