Here's my favorite movies, which might change due to new movies breaking into the list or stay like this forever but as for now here are the top 20 movies I love watching over and over!

disclaimer: the synopsis for each movie kinda sucks but bear with me because I know some people don't recognize a couple of the movies

Number 20: Song of the sea

A masterpiece
A masterpiece

Ben was a small kid when his mom disappeared from his life with only a promise he made to take care of his sister, something he really has no intention of keeping now that they're a bit older. His father hasn't gotten over his mother's disappearance either, his grief leading their grandmother to deem him unfit for parenthood and to take them away to her house. Ben and Soairse embark on a journey to get home filled with magic and danger and hopefully some closure on the memories Ben and his father haven't been able to shake.
~~~
This movie is a beautiful masterpiece that never fails to get me focused on a different thing with each viewing. First viewing I was captivated by the magical story of a brother and sister, next all i could do was admire the art, then i noticed how the character designs connected the characters to the myth, creating a shorthand for their emotional journeys, then i just listened to the song of the sea and wondered at how enraptured the movie left me. The movie is definitely worth your time and is something worth coming back to again and again.
Number 19: Inside out
my movie when i want to be emotionally manipulated into crying
my movie when i want to be emotionally manipulated into crying
Watch the personified emotions of a girl named Riley go through a journey to deal with her moving to a new house (i am so sorry that this is downright awful so idk here's the official one
After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.
~~~
I have a slight obsession with media with the goal of reducing you to tears. Due to being a very emotional person by nature i am in constant need for movies where no one will blame you if you cry. I cry like all the time and this is my favorite movie to cry to because i love Riley and just can't help but be interested in the unique concept while also having personal attachment to sorrow in general being used as a learning experience.

Number 18: Trolls

My movie that helps me when i'm depressed as heck. never fails to get me singing and smiling
My movie that helps me when i'm depressed as heck. never fails to get me singing and smiling

Bergens are the Trolls enemy due to the Trolls being the Bergens source of happiness if eaten but 20 years after the trolls escaped their clutches the trolls have forgotten to be afraid of being found by the Bergens again. Future queen Poppy's party however ends with a Bergen finding them and stealing some Trolls! She's on her way to save her friends, along with grumpy Branch!
~~~
2016 certainly was...a year. That happened. That fact alone had me depressed and lo and behold what came but a simple story of happiness. It's amazing texture, beautiful songs, and fun characters were exactly what I needed. Some people tend to criticize it for oversimplifying the concept of happiness, specifically the ability to be so after not being happy for so long, but i really think they actually were touching on the concept of "Joy" instead, something that seems interchangeable with happiness but is more referring to an ability to be at peace even if your world is crashing around you. Something that the Trolls movie gives me in spades.
Number 17: Bungaku shoujo/Book girl
A picture of the heroine who really isn't there as much as she should be for a title character
A picture of the heroine who really isn't there as much as she should be for a title character
Konoha Inoue gave up writing in middle school due to guilt for his middle school crush Miu attempting to commit suicide. Now in high school he's started to write again due to the encouragement of Tohko Amano, AKA the book girl. But Miu Asakura re-enters his life threatening to spiral him down into the grief and melancholy that consumed him in middle school. Will his friends be able to save him and end the cycle of misery these two seem to be stuck on?
~~~
Book girl continues to be the most interesting twisted movie to me. Like I said before if you have no prior knowledge of the characters (like I didn't) it's easy to be bummed out by the minimal development of the relatively small cast but refused to drop my attention by introducing me to the manipulative, broken, whirlwind of emotions that is Miu. It was easy for me just be fascinated by the twisted sense of love-hate she had for Inoue. The movie explained how she got this way without justifying it.. There's also how the ending is something I don't usually see, an ending that attempts to give both sides closure without magically glossing over the hurt the two have been through (well er in the wow now we can be the best of friends way). It serves as an interesting conclusion, a touch rushed but the sentiment still pulling through.

Number 16: Book of life

I am a staunch defender of the simple stylistic movie
I am a staunch defender of the simple stylistic movie

A trio of friends grows into a love triangle. Some celestials get involved which leads to misunderstandings which results in death which results in a simple love story with the day of the dead as a backdrop.
~~~
Here I am to defend movies that get criticized of oversimplification to be perfectly honest. Book of life's biggest crime seems to be characterization and a typicalish love triangle which we are all kinda of sick of due to waaaay too much prioritizing romantic love being THE love everyone needs vs the power of friendship or "familial bonds are pretty cool too guys". I kinda get the criticisms of Maria (shock she...reads??? book??) But dang if I didn't enjoy this. It's unique beautiful designs and sweet atmosphere just had me hooked. Tropey as it could be I was still absolutely charmed and rewatches haven't dulled it's enjoyment value to me.
Number 15: Castle in the sky
come on vamanos, let's go on an adventure!!
come on vamanos, let's go on an adventure!!
Running away from pirates who are after her amulet lead Sheeta to Pazu. A boy who tells her about the castle in the sky.
~~~
Viola here it is! the ghibli film that made it on here! The one that made me realize I really like adventure films? Well more like cemented it to be honest (one higher on the list made me come to the realization i like adventure films). I really love the quicker and adventure oriented pace of this ghibli movie that introduces such a rich world and likable mains. Any questions you might have about character motives or world elements were answered and I had fun on the ride.

Number 14: Nerawareta Gakuen

it's a beautiful mess, like chill as heck while chaos goes on everywhere
it's a beautiful mess, like chill as heck while chaos goes on everywhere

i'm not even joking i have no freaking clue what is going on in this movie so here is the MAL synopsis

Kenji Seki's daily routine was set in stone. Every morning he walks his dog at the beach to get a glimpse of his crush, Kahori Harukawa, as she rides the waves on her surfboard, and walks to school together with his childhood friend, Natsuki Suzuura. Everything changed on a sunny spring morning when he stumbled across Ryouichi Kyougoku, a handsome new transfer student who claims to be a psychic, musing about how amazing it was that he was finally on Earth...

Nerawareta Gakuen tells the relationship-driven story of how Ryouichi's presence sets the wheels of fate in motion for Kenji. Not only are his ordinary days challenged by growing jealousy from seeing Kahori falling for the young psychic, but his friend Natsuki seems to be troubled by problems of her own. And then he still has to deal with whatever plans Ryouichi has in store for him.
~~~
What a mess honestly. what a beautifully animated heartfelt confusing as heck mess. I don't know what this movie has to do with psychics since the mains are only incidentally that. I don't know what is up with the time traveler's rivalry turned camaraderie with the main character/chaos he brings up at the school. The only thing I understood was the love square and boy did I not really care but dang guys the atmosphere in this one is so relaxing, The art and animation so beautiful and if nothing else I do indeed love the time traveler for being charismatic. The movie has it's moments and I'm sure more watches could clarify the crazy amount of STUFF happening in this movie. But as a first watch I enjoyed it so much like it's just so calming and inspired me to watch it again just for the soothing feeling.
Number 13: Piano no more
More stories about friendships please
More stories about friendships please
A dare to prove Shuuhei's bravery by going to the supposedly haunted piano in the forest leads to a friendship with Kai despite the two being complete opposites.
~~~
It's getting an anime!! Ok so like I'm not gonna pretend i wasn't wanting more of this after watching the movie but I was shocked that it was a series with more to have. I've said before that what I like most about this movie was the camaraderie of the two mains. The story itself is very simple in the sense that the story is just them getting to know one another and learn to respect their differences or even just learn from their differences. They're opposites but this doesn't stop them from genuinely getting along in the WE ACTUALLY LIKE HANGING OUT instead of always arguing or fighting and calling it a genuine connection (cough cough i'm talking to you fight=love couples/friendships) and when they do fight over their differences it's not treated as a gimmick but as moments to knit them together by understanding those differences and respecting them. (<--- i plagiarizing my own article from way back) I still just love this movie for that.

Number 12:Space Pirate Captain Harlock

gorgeous anime cgi movie got me into an old anime
gorgeous anime cgi movie got me into an old anime

A young man named Logan makes his way on board the shp Arcadia with one purpose. To kill Harlock, a pirate who is making trouble for the government and their plans for earth.
~~~
The story is pretty simple to the point that it almost disappears because you're distracted by just that amazing animation (goomies I feel so sad some of these movies I enjoyed enough to include were so visual) but I do like the characters here! There needed to be some smoother writing and character depth to the point where i questioned if it would have been better to just make it a reboot show but I ended up liking these characters enough to check out the original Harlock anime (which made me love them even more even if Logan and Ezra aren't there). The movie itself had me mesmerized and attached to the characters even if I couldn't follow the motivations for Harlock specifically which is funny since you know it is called Captain Harlock. But stunning visuals, interesting characters, and a unique world has me hooked.
Number 11:Tarzan
My childhood
My childhood
A trio of tragedies (shipwreck, when jaguars attack + the sequel) leads to Tarzan being raised by apes and having to prove his worth to them for most of his childhood. His world is shaken when he meets other humans, putting his loyalties to the test and forcing him to decide where he truly belongs.
~~~
Phil Collins discourse is the first thing to come to mind when I think of this movie but mostly I just love love Jane and Tarzan. As characters (and they're kinda cute together :P) There's no question that Tarzan is reliant of the coming of age story (despite looking 21~30 idk how these ages in disney work) in terms of his constant desire to fit in with his adoptive gorilla family but always knowing he's not because of...hairless indicators...Then he meets Jane and finally feels like he has people JUST like him. He has the opportunity not to be the odd one out. I'm not sure if the landing stuck and i definitely am making more of it than was there since lol the plot goes into the coming back home because of clayton instead of 'I came home' because he wanted to come home on his own but these emotions and how Tarzan emotes them got me attached at childhood to this movie. It's also adventurous and has one of the many loml's Jane Porter who is a damsel in distress that isn't trashed for it since bruh England did not have no horde of baboons chasing you over a stupid picture. She learns to adapt, loves learning and teaching in general, is absolutely energetic and artistic and i love !!. Adventures, touching, and featuring some childhood faves Tarzan almost breaks my top 10....almost.

Number 10:Thumbelina

I love 1 (one) red headed pessimest
I love 1 (one) red headed pessimest

A woman wishes for a child and gets one the size of her thumb! Thumbelina falls for a fairy prince and get stolen by a frog and ayayay! The troubles she will face getting back home!
~~~
Ah yes the infamous little lady with a razzie to her movie name. My Thumbelina darling whom I love. The story is...flawed in its simplicity. undeniably due to it just being a "lets get home" only to end in "tee hee get home? no get married". but errgrah i just can't hate it for being true to a journey fairy tale like Thumbelina. The story is one that probably should've been adapted to give Thumbelina more agency instead of constantly caving to random people telling her to get married but grah I just. she's a puddleglum incarnate to all her situations. she just throws energy into everything and has a kms attitude whenever there's an inconvenience, needing constant validation (goomies what a mood). I actually love all the songs (yes you too Marry the mole), Thumbelina x Cornelius is cute despite having little screentime, gorgeous animation (thank you Don Bluth), and surprise surprise another journey/adventure type movie -_- little suspicious of why they keep appearing? Well get ready to be introduced to the one who started the whole attachment to animated adventure/journey films, the one and only !!!
Number 9: Sinbad
me?using this opportunity to show you Eris again instead of a movie poster? more likely than you'd think!
me?using this opportunity to show you Eris again instead of a movie poster? more likely than you'd think!
After Sinbad is accused of stealing the book of peace his old friend Proteus agrees to take his place in jail (and possible execution) on the condition of Sinbad getting the book back before Proteus is executed. Together with the Ambassador Marina, Sinbad makes his way to get it back from the one who really stole the book. Eris the goddess of discord.
~~~

Huge mythical monsters out to get him, a mesmerizing goddess whose only purpose is to create chaos and actual Prince Proteus being a role model for Lanalamprouge, the adventure movie that started it all welcome Sinbad into the top 10!! And like what more can I say that I haven't already? I love adventures, dreamworks 2d animation is just *mwah*, Proteus just has my heart while Eris is free to take my soul and I just adore going on this mythological adventure over and over again.

Number 8:Prince of Egypt

Here's some angst :)
Here's some angst :)

Moses was sent adrift on the river by his Hebrew mother to save his life from a massacre only to be raised by Egyptian royalty. Figuring out his true heritage has a cost.
~~~
A masterpiece. Like cinematic huge scope, amazing animation, just so much emotions and relationships and hope and angst and the songs are like great and iconic and perfectly paced and ....words...all the words of praise and admiration and kudos and respect and love (haha and x infinity)
Number 7: Sleeping Beauty
This film is an aesthetic tbh
This film is an aesthetic tbh
Maleficent curses the princess Aurora to die on her sixteenth birthday after not being invited to the baby shower. Three fairies manage to scale back the curse to sleep because die is a tad extreme and do their best to protect her.
~~~
To me the aesthetics of this movie make it perfect fairy tale visual. As a fairy tale nut this particular art style just embodies all the elegance and vintageness the is the fairy tale genre.I just love how much classic feel and elegance and contains and I am always mesmerized by how it embodies "fairy tale".

Number 6: Joseph King of dreams

This scene was so nice :D
This scene was so nice :D

Joseph's jealous brothers sell him into slavery and he does his best to survive and understand what life has thrown his way to accept the future which is brighter than he thinks.
~~~
An underrated dreamworks 2d movie. What else is new. This ones underration confounded me because it wasn't till recently that i knew it was a vhs release like bwhatt?But this particular story always spoke to me due to er an obsession with revenge stories when I was young (one of my favorite movies was and still is The count of monte cristo). Which isn't really an element in Joseph until the end but the constant way Joseph was determined to be fair in his world that wasn't impressed me. It appealed to me more when it seemed he would give into despair but just managed to hold himself together with faith. And the "should I take vengeance on my brothers" at the end is such a human conflict he has at the end and just Joseph's story has always spoken to me and Dreamworks was once again really respectful with how they treated this story. Soundtrack is great, art is great, characters are great so ....yeah GREAT!!
Number 5: Fox and the hound
Like catch me crying over the power of friendship
Like catch me crying over the power of friendship
A fox named Tod makes friends with a hound named Copper, neither knowing that growing up might make the friendship difficult to keep.
~~~
Power of friendship darnnit. Ok so obviously one of the staples of my childhood was being invested in a friendship that seemed to be doomed due to everyone knowing the roles they would have to play when they eventually grew up, something this freaking movie knows and is always ready to break your heart over because they just freaking go "and we'll always be friends" likasjdfnkljasfnlkajsnd how dare. But it has stayed absolutely iconic to me for how it ended, a bittersweet beautiful tribute to friendship.

Number 4: Garden of words

a movie that means the world to me
a movie that means the world to me

Takao wants to become a shoemaker, something he knows might not be possible, and one day meets a mysterious woman in the park when it rains. The days pass by.
~~~
This is a short and beautifully animated movie but the reason its so high up is that Yukari is important to me. There were these years where life was a standstill and I wanted nothing more than to just close my eyes and let the days pass me by. Yukari seems to embody all of that. Just this standstill. This quiet enjoyment of moments but then just a default smile. This knowing that you have to move on with your life but not having the energy to take that next step. and at the end she finally gets that strength to take that step. and it brings me to tears every time. Empathizing with her to cheer her on just gives me strength.
Number 3: Treasure planet
!!!He looks so happy here!!
!!!He looks so happy here!!
Jim Hawkins hasn't been the same since his father left and can seem to do nothing but hurt his mother with his rebellious exploits. After finding a map to Treasure planet his journey there allows him to to come to terms with his past, himself, and the future that he wasn't really looking at (like this synopsis has too much of my outlook on the movie but shut up it's my article and this is my son/sun)
~~~
Jim and this movie are very important to me. I've mentioned before that Jim was like a brother/role model/son to me and just seeing him find his balance in space and flying to a planet filled with treasure to find confidence in his abilities and self worth just always gives me a warm feeling. Silver is amazingly interesting in his internal battle between roguishness to genuine affection for Jim. Captain Amelia is...ma dawlin. Sarah Hawkins.. best. Animation stellar, and those two goo goo doll songs just embedded their importance into my heart and i loooooooooooooooooooooooooove this movie. and like Jim is #1 son bye!

Number 2: Rise of the guardians

Fairy tale superheroes. like what else could i ask for?
Fairy tale superheroes. like what else could i ask for?

Join Jack Frost and the guardians as they try to stop Pitch from stealing the dreams and hopes of children all around the world.
~~~
This movie is like interesting. i mean i love when people pay attention to lesser known fairy tales or fables to adapt and to take these characters and make it like an action adventure avengers league like haha yes I am a nerd who this specific set up appeals to ?? I also like Jack Frost (haha surprise right?) and all the characters are really charming to me. The animation on some things are so detailed like the effort blows me away and some real heart in how there's a focus on hope, joy, dreams, just-just all the stuff that makes the world go round. Just.... they got me fam.
Number 1: Beauty and the beast
tale as old as time will always have my heart. FAVORITISM!!
tale as old as time will always have my heart. FAVORITISM!!
Once upon a time there was a prince who for his arrogance and pride was cursed to be a beast unless by his 21st birthday he found someone to love him, but how could anyone learn to love a beast? (sorry my synopsis doesn't do the stained glass scene any justice :P)
~~~

Favorite movie of all time to be perfectly frank. An amazing soundtrack filled with songs I always want to sing along to, the love of my life, memorable side characters, hilariously relatable grumpy Beast, Gaston being a realistic and enjoyable villain, gorgeous animation and just all around gorgeous, tis the tale as old as time at my number one!! I just am in love with it and am always going to be so....

Thanks for listening and I hope you found some enjoyment in the article even if the cohesiveness is eh.
