If you think about it's really always been Damon. Since the beginning of this show I always thought Elena would eventually end up with the older Salvatore brother, even before we find out the part where Damon found Elena first. He spoke to her and wished her a love that would consume her, then proof made her forget all about him. That very same night Elena's parents drove off a bridge with her in the car and like magic Stefan saves Elena. Some fans may say that love was for Stefan but I don't think so. Elena had to forgive Damon for more than she ever did Stefan. She became his friend, his savior even, of course she had to love him. Elena said she hated Damon on multiple occasions but somehow see always forgave him, always found a way to trust him again. I hope the doppelgangers' destiny to meet and fall in love doesn't affect Elena and Damon, because I feel like even though Elena had this "epic love" with Stefan the slow blooming love she had for Damon was always there. Elena's love for Damon had time to grow and strengthen.
