I think that is what Smith meant. There might have been curiosity, but during their whole time together in the Dark Dimension, he makes no attempt to woo her. At the end of Midnight Damon said to Elena that he loved just once in his whole life and that was her. "Can you remember that I loved you?" He tells Elena. He also told her that he wants Bonnie to know that he is sorry. When he is brought back to life, the first name he thinks of is Elena's name. Throughout the series, he does not have a serious thought of having a romantic relationship with Bonnie, and I do believe if he did not die, his love is so great for Elena, he could not have given his heart to another. That would have been unfair to Bonnie since she would not have all of his heart. Any way, L.J. Smith wanted Damon and Elena to be together in the end, but as we know she was fired for it. So regardless who writes the new series, I will not regard it as Vampire Diaries. Throughout the series everything points to the eventual pairing of Damon and Elena as living forever as eternal soulmates. Because you die for another, does not mean that you love them romantically. And he put others before his own life,selfless love. But love comes in many forms. If it was Stefan, he would have done the same thing. I love Bonnie too,but more so in the TV show, she is so much stronger and independent.

L.J Smith was quite clear on what she said that he has feelings for both of them. Of course he's going to tell Elena that he loves her, especially if he believes it. He sees Elena as a goal and somewhere along the line, I believe that has clouded his judgement. L.J. Smith has even said that she's a goal. You can say that Damon thought of Elena first, but he still thought of Bonnie and I can only guess to some that I bet they wished he never thought of her at all. I don't think Damon had a serious thought about either girl, because his sights were set on being a vampire again. When Damon realises that Elena is just a goal, he will love Bonnie with all his heart. As far as I can remember, L.J didn't say she wanted Delena as end game, but that she wanted to write more about them, as well as Bamon, but the publisher or whom ever, wanted it strictly Stelena. The Vampire Diaries is about Elena falling in love with both brothers, so eventually she's going to have to make a decision. Elena is dating Stefan, so they're already/still having buildup, whereas she has not dated Damon, so obviously she's going to have a build up with Damon, to eventually fall in love with him, otherwise it would not make any sense. This does not mean, just because of this buildup, through the series that it leads to their eventual pairing, because she can choose Stefan, as she loves him too. It could go either way. IA with you that sacrificing yourself for another does not mean that they have romantic feelings for the other, but we are talking about Damon and I don't think he would go all out for Matt or Meredith. Bonnie is much stronger than people believe and Damon and Matt recognised this. Anyway, i'm not trying to knock your opinions, because obviously your entitled to it, but i'm just showing you how I see it from my perspective.

Lannieluv7 NO LJ WAS NOT FIRED BECAUSE SHE WANTED DELENA AND SHE HAS SAID THAT MUTIPLE TIMES.She was fired because she was taking the book in a direction they didnt want. I do not believe he cares for Bonnie in a sister way at all. When she kissed him, she made him blush. You dont want to kiss your brother or sister. And in midnight he felt himself meting at the presence of Bonnie. Yeah Damon did tell Elena he only loved once in his whole life but actions speak louder than words. Damon says alot of untrue things because he hates having feelings. Actions speak louder than words and he DIED for Bonnie. That's love. It had nothing to do with Elena. He would rather be dead than have Bonnie die.Why else would he die for her. When he wakes up he thinks of Bonnie and Elena equally.He loved Katherine and then fell in love with Elena so i think he can love again.And you must have not really understood the book Midnight because he was struggling throughout the whole book with his feelings for Bonnie. That was the issue for Damon in the books trying to hold his feelings for Bonnie back because he was so focused on Elena. So that's why he wasnt trying to whoo her because he didnt want to feel anything for her.BUt we know he does especailly after he saves her.

DamonLoverr I guess I'm a die hard Bamon fan because I def got the feeling in Midnight he was very much in love with Bonnie as well as Elena. He seemed to be fighting harder to NOT feel for Bonnie. As to L.J. Smith being fired here is her latest post on that subject in her guestbook: “I fought tooth and nail to write those books--I fought until my agent wouldn't support me, when she said I would be sued and she wouldn't fight with me anymore, and I WROTE Phantom. But instead of edits what I got back was a letter to Clare the ghostwriter telling her to completely change my book. I HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. I was deceived by Alloy and got no support from Harper.” She asked us all to help get the word out that she didn't quit. I think never knowing what really would have happened in the author's mind is the worst part of it all.

Realist1 I just don't understand, where some are getting the idea that L.J was going to end the books with Delena. I along with others have read what she has said, as well as what is written in her guest books, on her site and that has not been stated. L.J has said Damon has feelings for both girls, so we just got to wait and see how far these feelings will go for each girl, though, I would rather L.J had finished the books, because we will probably never know.

loveofdelena its clear from book 1 that delena were destined to be together from the start. I agree with tracyparm. his feelings for bonnie simply paled in comparison to his feelings for elena. anyone can see that. no matter who they ship. damon sacrificed himself for bonnie?? wow?? what a shocker! it must be true luv! you people...honestly. he would have done the same for anyone. especially elena.
