Well, as you guys may or may not know, I've been doing a series of "Why I Love" articles for all the princesses, and since I've already done my eight favorites, I decided to try something new instead. For my bottom five favorite princesses, I decided to make a new series of articles talking about what prevents them from being higher. So yeah, this might be a bit controversial, but it's my opinion so if you don't like it than...cool? Let's go onto the article!
The Positives
I didn't want this article to be all bad, and there really are a lot of positives about Mulan. First of all, she's the princess I most relate to. We both are forgetful, lazy, want to please our parents, but feel like we fail, don't follow society's "norm", etc. Also, I love her awkwardness and her change throughout the story. I definitely see the appeal to Mulan, but she's not higher for a reason..
The Negatives
Her "Character Development"
I'm all for character development, especially when it involves an underdog facing their fears, which is the epitome of Mulan, but something is off with this. Mulan's character development is too drastic to me. She literally goes from a lazy, unrefined, forgetful, dishonorable daughter to the savior of China. It seems as the movie progresses, she looses her flaws and the things that made me love her. I honestly much prefer characters that can't do it all. I find it so much more realistic and relatable, but Mulan just becomes...perfect by the end of the move, which leads to my next point.
Her Lack of Flaws
I'm really sick of hearing Mulan or Belle fans accusing the classics of lacking flaws when the same is true to their own favorites. Really, by the end of the movie Mulan is desired by Shang, the perfect daughter, and the savior of China for crying out loud! I've heard from fans that a flaw of hers is her lack of being prepared, but?!!? I call that quick thinking actually..If Mulan fans want to comment below some of her flaws, I'd be happy to hear them, but to me she's just too perfect. Too smart, too brave, too selfless. Yes she fails at the beginning, but the change is just too quick and too much for it to be believable for me.
My Jealousy of Her
After writing my article and reading the comments, I decided to add this in. I really realize that I actually envy Mulan. While she's getting more and more awesome as the movie progresses; getting stronger, smarter, braver, I'm just stuck in her pre-war phase. This one may seem a bit stupid, but it really hits home for me.
In Conclusion
In conclusion, I like Mulan, I really do! As you can see, there really isn't too much I dislike about her. I truly admire to and relate her, but she's just too idealized and everything just changes too fast for me to believe. She's so brave, so selfless, so smart, so fast thinking, it's just too much, especially coming from someone who is far from perfect. So yeah, that's the article. Sorry if I offended anyone by writing this! If you'd like to argue with me in the comments go ahead, but please be respectful! Thanks for reading everyone :)
