Okay, after thinking long and hard I go for them.
1. The movie is not really about their relationship, it's more about the friendship between Aladdin and Genie. Because of that, they sometimes feel like an afterthough.
2. While they spent a lot of time talking at each other, they nearly never talking to each other.
3. In many regards the relationship is very shallow. Aladdin is all "Hey, look how many shiny toys I have", which is frankly slightly insulting. All those lies - at the end of the movie it doesn't feel like they really know each other. Which would be only excusable if their relationship were created in fairy tale style.
