99% of you are amazing fans! This is a guide on dealing with the 1%.

To summarize:

1. REPORT ATTACKERS IMMEDIATELY. You are doing the entire community a favor as they are probably attacking other members.

YOU MUST PROVIDE AS MUCH EVIDENCE AS POSSIBLE IN THE REPORT FIELD, including links to the attacks.

Attacks are personal insults, threats, bigotry, etc. A person saying they don't like a contribution is NOT an attack. Having a debate is also not an attack until insults/threats etc. are mixed in.

2. IGNORE THEM. DO NOT RESPOND BACK. If you attack back, you are probably giving the attacker/troll what they want. We won't dig through 20 pages of reports to find out who started it. In some cases, both people will be banned.

3. Reporting is not a weapon. People who fraudulently report enemies, do not provide details, and/or repeatedly report people without providing evidence may also be removed from Fanpop. Some weirdos report their own fake users. Seriously, you are asking for it, and you aren't fooling anyone.

4. CHEATERS WILL BE BANNED: DON'T SWITCH TO YOUR FAKE ACCOUNTS EVER AGAIN

Don't switch accounts to jack up your fans, props, poll votes, or whatever. It's not fair to the honest fans. If you have friends who do this, please send them this article.

ALL of your accounts will be banned for life if a moderator chooses, even if you have amazing medals. I'm sure you can think of some famous banned fans, so we are serious. Consider this the final warning.

If you created multiple accounts for any reason, pick one, and do not ever log into the other accounts again. You don't need to delete the old accounts, but do not use them. Excuses like "it's my brother/sister/dog's account" won't cut it.

Everyone is forgiven at this point. If you've cheated in the past, just don't do it again.

If you get caught cheating after this article is published, you are toast, and you may lose your "main" account forever.

This is an article describing how and why bans happen. It's an updated article based on one we posted in a troublesome club.

We've recently lifetime-banned several of the most troublesome users and deleted all of their content. In other words, there is no coming back for them. All their contributions are gone.

"But Fanpop, how can I avoid getting banned? I'm just a nice, honest, non-cheating fan!"

If someone picks a fight with you, DO NOT RESPOND, and immediately report it, and make sure you link to or quote the offending content. We absolutely need all the details. If you simply report the user without providing evidence, no action will be taken against them.

Also, we're talking about personal attacks, not normal human interactions.

Example:
A fan writes: "You suck and yo mamma sucks" ->You report them->Troll banned for life->You helped Fanpop terminate a troll and made Fanpop a better place!

Bad example:
Another fan writes: "This was some interesting fanfic, but the first section is taken word-for-word from my work last week. Here's the link. Do you mind changing it or attributing it to me?"->They are NOT a Troll, NOT banned, you should change your fanfic immediately, and you just wasted everyone's time. That being said, if the fan started the post with a slur or insult, they would have a problem.

There's a saying that "you can get away with almost anything if you do it nicely." While we're not necessarily encouraging people to try to get away with stuff, the "nicely" part is the key takeaway.

Given the volume of content and literally millions of fans, we cannot go and dig through a thousand comments to find out "who started it."

Think of it this way: if teachers and parents right now don't have time to figure out "who started it", imagine if one's parents had millions of children. Are they going to have time to sift through everything?

If you do respond to said troll and there is a ton of back and forth, with both sides cussing each other out, both of you will be banned from ever joining Fanpop again. There is a good chance moderators will delete 100% of your content and strip your medals and caps, as well.

If your buddy was banned, please do not bother to contact us. There was a very good reason, and saying "he was really nice to me" really means nothing. Even criminals are nice to some people. Giving a moderator attitude will be bad for everyone, and you won't be helping your friend's case.

The good news is that 99% of the users here are great people and not causing problems. Be cool and courteous with one another, report trolls immediately, WITH LINKED EVIDENCE, and every time WITHOUT responding to them, and, together, we'll purge them from Fanpop once and for all.

Hey everyone,

I felt like writing about the constant reposting of icons from livejournal, because I have become a very active lj user in the past months and I know of many lj people who are annoyed as hell to see their icons posted here.

First of all I'd like to say that I did it too. Yes, I took icons that were posted on livejournal and posted them here with credit.
Now you might say: Okay, but if people credit them, why is there a problem? It's not as if the lj people own the original pictures they icon.
This is of course true, but I think it is more about respect and being polite.

Imagine you...

To like or not to like? That is the question.

Earlier tonight, the ratings system of Fanpop experienced a massive overhaul. No longer can you rate content on a scale of one to five (ala YouTube), but if you like content, you can "like" it (ala Facebook), or "be a fan" of it.

Dave gave a very good, logical explanation for the change to help assuage some fears and answer some questions:

"Hi Guys,

Thanks for making this pick. There are a lot of reasons we wanted to create a new system for deciding whether fans like something or not. We found that most people were rating either 4 or 5 stars so we thought...

If you must promote a club, try these tips.
Re-reading the various articles about promoting clubs on Fanpop, it occurred to me that some fairly basic ideas were missing for promoting the clubs you like (not just the ones you create, but any clubs you enjoy).

Many of the previous etiquette articles and forum threads have described things to avoid in promoting a club, as well as suggestions for things to do. For once, I'm not going to rant about undesirable behavior (that's the plan, anyway), but just keep the focus on other things fans can try to promote their favorite clubs. I hate those darned internet predators, don't you?
I just logged onto Fanpop about a half hour ago and discovered something extremely profane and inappropriate on the YouTube spot. Due to it's heavily pornographic material, the video was deleted shortly thanks to several reports from some handy fellow Fanpoppers.

It was submitted by a user of the name bon8699. I reported this user 3 times and I expect him to be banned for a long, long time.

The reason I am so annoyed that this was submitted is that this is not some pornography site. And this is most certaintly not NewGrounds, where you can submit images like this as much as you please without...

I swear to whatever higher power you believe in that I am going to injure someone with all the shoddy spelling going around. Yes abbreviations are easier (in a sense) but it looks like a 5 year old wrote it and a lot of people don't understand it. So lets first go over some abbreviations that we should cut out of our vocabulary here at Fanpop when you post content...

u = you
r = are
srs = serious
2 = to or too (using it as "two" is fine)
plz = please

If you actually take that .5 of a second to type the whole word people will look at your content, comment and such a lot more and with nicer comments...

I am not here to lecture you yet again on photo crediting. I am done with that.

I am way past the lecturing and into downright grrrrrr-ville.

You already know full well that taking something you did not create and not giving full credit to the owner is theft. Your excuses mostly boil down to laziness at this point.

So.

This is my public notice that any and all images with no credit to the original owner of the image will be rated harshly no matter how great the picture is... or how much I normally like you.

Additionally, if there is a blatant Copyright notice right there on the damn picture and you still failed to credit the owner, I'm reporting it to Fanpop -and- notifying the owner of the image that you stole it.

Enough is enough.

Right, well the title is a bit sarcastic. The whole "trolling" thing is sorta annoying me that having a low rate on something HAS to mean you were trolled...well maybe there's a different reason. I'll break it up to why that might not have been a trolling...

Soapboxes
- Did you use proper grammar? Check your spelling
- What's a paragraph? Learn how to use paragraphs properly to make your soapbox formatted and not look like a 1 star article
- They may not agree or think your opinion is totally outrageous...not a trolling

Images
- Would you like that quality of a picture? Try and avoid small and bad...

Yes, I am fired up again over another issue of cruelty here on Fanpop... specifically the practice of passing judgment on other users.
    Let's face it, we do not know each other personally, and for the most part none of us have ever met in real life. I think it is cruel and sad that people find it necessary to try to judge the intentions or actions of others. How could anyone possibly judge another person or their actions without knowing them personally or knowing the things they are going through. You could not possibly say what you would do in their situation without...

Okay, I don't know if it's just coincidence but I noticed this week that some picks just are, I don't quite know how to describe it, bad.

It just seems that a lot of picks are asked so that they are asked, a lot of them don't have pictures. (that's not very important but I can't help noticing)
But the worst thing is that there are so many typos in the questions. Look, my English is not very good, I make a lot of mistakes but al least I try to make as less as possible. I mean, a lot of questions are just so wrong, the 'preview' thing that you get when you've finished making your pick is there...

A few minutes ago I thought of a partial answer to the recent outbreak of internet trolls we've had over the last few moths.

Ladies and Gentlepoppers, I introduce to you:

The ATSOF (The Anti Troll Squad Of Fanpop)
This will be a society of fanpoppers who work together to justly rate any content which has (without reason) been rated low.

My plan is to make an ATSOF Spot; if a spot or particular piece of content has been rated low you can alert the ATSOF spot about this and some of the "fans" of the spot will head over to the content and rate the content fairly, therefore boosting the rating.

Please tell me what you think; I don't want to create a Ghost-Spot-to-be

If we make a new spot we want to make it popular. Recently I made a new spot so when I wanted to send a message to all my friends about it I got tired of typing individual messages so I quit. So we should be able to send one message to all our friends at the same time if necessary. Also there should be an area that says "new spots" on the home page so that people can see what has been recently created and if they want to join the particular spot. It would really make the people who created the spots happy because they could get some good publicity.

By the way I made a new spot about Kal Penn, the indian guy from the van wilder movies, Harold and Kumar go to white castle, and Epic Movie.

So if u like those movies check it out. all you have to do is type "Kal Penn" in the search engine" (obviously, I know)

Also this soapbox was ment for the fanpop spot

Hello to everyone,
my name is Inès, and I'm French.

As a lot of you know, Paris has been attacked yesterday by terrorists. The concert hall "Le Bataclan" has been attacked during a concert.

128 dead and more than 200 wounded are for now counted. This is a tragedy.

I was born and I've lived in Paris, and I often go there and to the Bataclan to attend concerts, and seeing this, is just awful. The whole country is shocked and desperate.

3 national days of mourning have been declared.

I invite you to leave a few words, thoughts for the victims of this disaster.

Thank you <3

Writers Note: This has some strong opinions. I wrote it for my blog. Therefore, it was meant to state my opinions loud and clear with no respect for others. Sorry about that guys, but if you're sensitive, proceed with caution. I'm also very liberal.

Well, we've been in Iraq for five years as of Wednesday. And now we might be getting into the same thing in Iran. Nothing is certain, that's just my opinion. You think they'd actually learn after the first time. You know, maybe if we've been stuck in this damn place forever where it's kinda hard to withdraw, that we shouldn't do it again. TEXT FORMATTING
Those of you who have written soapbox articles before may have seen the guide that Fanpop provides for formatting text. But maybe you've never written a soapbox article or never noticed the key, and have been wondering how some users manage to make their text more interesting. With these tags, you can:
* boldface your text
* put your text in italics
* underline your text
* have your text point to a different URL link
