My Sansa Stark vs Daenerys Targaryen Game of Thrones Theory

So, let’s start from the beginning…

A long time ago, Lady Lyanna Stark was engaged to one brave and powerful Robert Baratheon, who happened to be her brother Ned’s friend.
Lyanna was (supposedly) kidnapped and raped by the evil Rhaegar Targaryen, who was married and had children with Elia Martell. (This is what Robert Baratheon thinks… there’s evidence that makes us believe Lyanna was not in love with Robert; she loved Rhaegar instead, and went with him voluntarily).
This episode led to chaos between almost every family in Westeros. Baratheon, Stark, Targaryen, Martel… and it also led to Robert marrying someone else, which brought the Lannisters to the picture (ughhh)

So, where am I going with this? Here’s my theory (which is NOT about Jon Snow ;) )

I think everything will be determined between Sansa Stark and Daenerys Targaryen.
These characters have a LOT in common. I think they’re two sides of the same coin.

- First, they were both promised to be Queens since Book 1 (episode 1).
- They were both engaged to powerful men who would make them Queens. And, both engagements didn´t exactly turn out like they thought they would. (Sansa was so happy with her engagement to Joffrey before she realized he was the worst person in the world; Dany was scared of Drogo, but then they were really in love).
- They were both in very good company, with strong and wise men by their side, who had some sort of feelings for them (I’m thinking The Hound for Sansa… as I think Sansa’s doom started when she didn’t run away with him; and Jorah Mormont for Dany… with whom she has an on-and-off relationship due to her being stubborn and never doing as he says).
- They both lost their families.

BUT… their lives may be similar, but their personalities are quite different…

Sansa is insecure; Dany is quite confident.
- Sansa's worst enemy is her own fear; Dany's is being stubborn
- Sansa loses every hope of becoming Queen (she doesn’t even want that anymore, as she realized it’s just not worth it; Dany never gives up (she fight for a Throne she didn’t care about in the first place).
- Sansa grows INTERNALLY, she matures, she’s been through a lot; Dany grows EXTERNALLY (she gets more and more powerful, and even when she loses everything, he has supernatural powers that save her)

So… who will be Queen?
I’m actually TEAM SANSA, (because I think fear is more likely to be beaten than stubbornness) but I don’t know what could happen next.

But I’m just talking about two Queens… who’s our King???

My choice is this Guy - someone who HAS Royal blood and we SHOULDN’T forget about: GENDRY “BARATHEON”.

At first I thought he was going to end up with Arya, but, isn’t Sansa WAY more appropriate for him??
PLUS!!!!! The union between Sansa Stark and Gendry Baratheon would represent the union (that never happened) between Lyanna Stark and Robert Baratheon.
If THAT doesn’t restore the peace between the families, I don’t know what will…

SO MAYBE….. Dany is meant to be Queen (if the idea of the whole saga is to tell the story of how the Targaryens got back to the usurped Throne)
AND Sansa and Gendry will rule the North together…

(Although I’d like Sansa to be Queen)

couldbethis This is awesome. Nicely thought out. Well, I'd have to say that you bring up some good points about their inner character. Dany is very proud and stubborn. But it is because she has such an inner strength. She probably always had the potential, but gained confidence from being with a Strong and powerful man like Drogo who killed the person who abused her and suppressed her (her brother Viserys.) This was probably the moment she was set free from her chains of being forced to be subservient. But her real strength is that which shows when she is facing a huge challenge. That's the real her coming out, and it is strong and worthy of being followed. She's been so successful in all her moves, that it takes her by surprise when the former slaves retaliate when she executes one for murdering a master. She doesn't understand tact and persuasion, which is why Tyrion is so incredibly perfect as an addition to her team. So who would be a better Queen? Definitely Dany. She has a lot more fight in her. Sansa is great and has made many leaps from being only concerned with being pretty and ladylike. She's actually become somewhat strong and is showing her first moves when she sends Brienne to her uncle, the Blackfish. Still, I think we have yet to see her show any real force or direction, which is necessary for being a ruler. I think these two could learn a lot from each other. Dany is all force, and Sansa's all endurance.

TheHound1 I think it's very interesting as to where the characters of Jon and Sansa are at right now. Jon showed bravery but also lost his cool completely during the battle of the bastards, whereas Sansa kept her cool and her head to rescue the battle for the Starks. At the moment, you'd have to say that Sansa is in the stronger position to take charge of the family. I don't think Jon is finished yet though - this will just be a hard lesson for him, and he'll come back stronger from it next season, when we'll find out how crucial he really is. Sansa would probably be a good ruler, but not as strong as Dany just yet. I also think she'd be too stubborn to immediately accept Dany as queen, knowing that her father fought hard to overthrow the Targaryens, though in time Dany and the Starks will probably have to join forces in order to defeat the night's king. As for Gendry, I still think that he and Arya may be destined to meet again and to be together, rather than for him to be with Sansa. I like your theory though!

FlightofFantasy Nice article! The only thing I disagree with is Sansa/Gendry, but that's probably 'cause I'm an unrepentant SanSan and Gendrya shipper. :P

StarkStark I think it's going to be Arya / Gendry. I agree Gendre is important. He cud be the promised Azor Ahai and Arya will die when he thrust his new lightbringer sword in her heart . That's my theory

AudreyFreak I think you're misunderstanding both girls a bit. Sansa's flaw isn't insecurity (and let's keep in mind she used to be much more confident) or "fear" rather it's not accepting ugly truths when it's too painful to. Dany isn't insecure but I don't know that I would necessarily call her confident either. Also, to couldbethis- you really aren't showing a good understanding of either character . Dany is not "strong" (definitely not in the show anyway). She refuses to accept that she was born into a pretty bad family because it doesn't fit her agenda. She just flat out will not listen to how her dad was a psycho and Rhaegar was maybe not perfect (good grief, she even blames ELIA for HIM running off with Lyanna!). A true queen listens to her own advisors. A true queen does not given with fear and death as she does. Remember? "If I am ever a queen, I'll make them love me." Sansa has heavy leadership foreshadowing. I like Dany (book Dany, that is) but she rules with her heart way too much and often won't listen to reason. She's intelligent and has compassion and she's certainly no Baratheon but she's not ready to be queen. She hardly even wants to; she does it because she thinks she's destined to when really the poor girl just wants a home. Also, why does a ruler need "fight in them"? Isn't that the exact opposite of what a good queen needs? Someone who's aggressive and again, won't listen to reason? Sansa is not "somewhat strong" (and her enjoyment in beauty and propriety do NOT negate that, by the way). She IS strong. She's got Ned's mercy with Cat's intelligence and Petyr's political sense. She has the makings of a great ruler.
