"Why do I have to go to the Moonstone?" asked Rosepaw. She was obviously tired.
"You have to. Grassstar's on her last life so you might be medicine cat when she dies. Then, you must travel there with the new leader, and you have to lead. You have to know the way, Rosepaw." replied Waterlily. They'd just left the camp and were heading to the Moonstone.
Rosepaw sighed. She just wanted to sleep.
It was later in the day when they reached the Moonstone. Waterlily went under to the Moonstone, whilst Rosepaw kept watch from a boulder.
She might have dozed off because before she knew it she was back in the forest. But not tending to the sick... hunting. She had caught a mouse and added it to the fresh-kill pile, feeling a rush of pride. Then a voice sounded behind her. She turned to see Gingerheart, the medicine cat before Waterlily. She had never met Gingerheart, but somehow she knew who it was.
"Rosepaw, you don't belong a medicine cat. You know you have dreams of hunting. And of mothering. You can do nether if you are a medicine cat. It is not your wish. And not our's either." spoke Gingerheart as she touched her nose to Rosepaw's flank. "I know you don't like to fight. But lay that aside. This shouldn't be you here."
"I know! I want to be a warrior more than anything!" pleaded Rosepaw. "But I can't tell Waterlily! It'll break her heart!"
"You must stop being so sensitive of others. Is this about her or you? You must tell her."
"But why don't you tell her in her dreams?" queried Rosepaw.
"This does not involve me." replied Gingerheart, taking a step back. "It is your fate. You must deal with it yourself."
Rosepaw nodded but looked at her feet. "Then who's to be next medicine cat?"
"Don't you know? Someone who hates fighting and hunting and is sensitive... can't you tell it's Poppykit? Whilst the others play she just sits and watching, sorrow in her eyes." Gingerheart said. "I almost feel sorry for her."
"But what about..." Rosepaw saw Gingerheart had disappeared.
"Rosepaw! Rosepaw!" called Waterlily, shaking Rosepaw from her dreams. "Everything OK?"
Rosepaw wandered if she should tell Waterlily about her dream or not... or if this was the right time. "Everything's great!" she said at last.
Who cared was Gingerheart thought? She wanted to do this, maybe not as much as become a warrior, but she wanted this.
