Yeah, I know, we're the bad guys, the evil ones, the ones that you're SUPPOSED to hate. But Slytherin itself isn't all about being evil! It's not even about being a pureblood!

If you think about it, our defining characteristics, ambition, cunning, and good self-preservation instincts, are present in many great leaders. The reason that so many Slytherins go bad is that the qualities valued in our house are often essential in following people like Voldemort. I personally don't believe that "mudbloods" are bad and should be exterminated, but, being a Slytherin, if following Voldemort gave me the best chance of survival and power, then follow Voldemort I would.

Severus Snape. He wasn't bad. He wasn't good either, but he had a heart, he had a soul, and he did what he thought was best at the time. He followed Lord Voldemort. This was a fatal mistake, and you can see that after Voldemort killed Lily, Snape switched sides completely. I'm of the belief that, after Voldemort killed Lily and Snape went to Dumbledore, had Snape donned the Sorting Hat once again, he would have been sorted into Hufflepuff, for his new loyalty to Dumbledore and Lily. Seems a stretch, but you never know!

Slughorn. I don't want him to be in Slytherin. Granted, he had a sort of ambition (his collection of famous students) and certainly great self-preservation instincts, but I think he lacked cunning, which was just SO important. That being said, Slughorn wasn't evil.

Regulus Arctous Black. Despite the pressures of his family, he made the right decision. He was kind to Kreacher, a mere house elf, and he helped Harry by getting the locket. He is often forgotten but he IS a good Slytherin.

Personally, I revel in being in the "evil" house, but since people tend to judge us by that, here's my rant on "prejudice" in the Harry Potter books.

In all the other houses, individual characters have dark and light sides. Hermione can be a know-it-all. Ron and Harry can be huge jerks. Luna can be so honest that she creeps people out. Cedric Diggory looks like Edward Cullen. I was joking about that last one...Cedric was actually a decent guy. Ernie MacMillan was a jerk to Harry before he apologized.

But what about Slytherin? Other than Snape (and MAYBE Narcissa), there are NO Slytherins with two sides to them! Crabbe, Goyle, Pansy, Bellatrix, Lucius, they're ALL 100% evil. Or too stupid to understand what's going on. Slytherin really gets a bad rap from people like them.

Slytherins are intricate, complex, and interesting people. Just because the most prominent were bad doesn't mean we all are. Think of it this way: we all think Gryffindors are perfect (I don't...but most people seem to) but WORMTAIL was a Gryffindor! We all have skeletons in our closets, but Slytherin's skeletons are out in the open.

Remember at the end of Philosopher's Stone? How Dumbledore changed the decorations and made Gryffindor win? How do you think all the Slytherins felt. You're sitting at a table with your friends, celebrating because you just won the house cup, and suddenly, it just gets snatched away. I know Harry and the others earned their points, but think about all the poor kids in Slytherin! I actually thought that part was really mean.

Why do people hate Slytherins? Really, the answer is obvious, we're the villains, DUH.

And that's pretty much the only reason I've ever received.

Siriusly guys, I'm sure we're all intelligent enough to make our own decisions. Just because Jo and Harry and Hermione and Ron hate Slytherins doesn't mean you all have to!

I'm not saying you have to love us and be our besties 4eva, but I AM tired of popping into a conversation only to hear "Omigod it's a Slytherin, kill it!" because I'm ambitious.

Slytherins are not all the same. I'm incredibly ambitious, Trix is fiery (Gryffindor-ish?) and super sneaky (Slytherin all the way!) Bellatix is just plain power hungry, the Malfoys are saving their own skins. We're not all evil. We're not all good. We're diverse. Just like the rest of you special snowflakes :D

Why not say complaining Gryffindors? Complaining Ravenclaws? Complaining PEOPLE? Why Slytherins? You're writing at article about how people should accept your house, yet in it, you insult all the others houses, especially mine. I find this rude, and I'm trying really hard not to insult anyone in this article.

"All the bad guys are Slytherins. Voldemort, Malfoy (arguable, arguable), Bellatrix, etc, etc."
-HecateA describing Slytherins

NOT TRUE! Wormtail's a Gryffindor. I'm pretty sure that's the only exception though :P

Sorry if I'm nit picking. But just like if I said "All boring people are Hufflepuffs," I would have gotten hate comments, here's my presumably reasonable response :)

~Lexa. Lord Voldemort.

P.S. Lots of you call us cowards, and it's semi-true. We have great self-preservation instincts (natural selection anyone?) That means that, in a fight, we might run rather than fight, simply because we want to stay alive. We're not like Gryffindors, glory and bravery before life. In a fight, I often run away. It means I can plot my revenge and orchestrate a cunning vendetta later on. Think of it this way:

We run, and we live to fight another day.
