This idea just came to me while I was sitting here. Please comment if you liked it.

Voldemort strode down the lane. He, thanks to his spies, knew exactly what the prophecy said. He also knew where to find the boy. Godric's Hollow on Halloween had a certain irony to it.
As he passed, a young child commented on his robes, thinking them to be a costume. The Potters' home was a quaint cottage. He looked in the window.
Inside, James Potter and his wife, Lily, were preparing for bed. Carelessly, James tossed his wand onto the chair he had just vacated. How foolish, to abandon his weapon.
As Voldemort entered the room, he heard James cry, "Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off!"
Voldemort cast the fatal spell.
"Avada Kedavra!"
James Potter dropped to the floor, dead.

Upstairs, Lily was just putting young Harry into his crib. Next to it was the crib of his twin sister, Hailey. Just as Voldemort came up the stairs, she spoke to them. She told the two how much she loved them.
With a blast of light, Voldemort entered. Lily placed herself between the cribs and Voldemort.
"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!"
"Stand aside you silly girl…stand aside, now."
"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead--"
"This is my last warning--"
"Not Harry…please…have mercy…have mercy…have mercy…Not Harry! Not Hary! Please--I'll do anything--"
"Stand aside. Stand aside, girl!" And with that, he killed Lily Potter.
He turned his attention to the black-haired boy in front of him. For some strange reason, Voldemort never saw Hailey.
He pointed his wand at the boy. The one simple curse that would remove the threat forever.
Just as he cast the spell, his power broke. He was not quite dead, yet not really alive.
On Harry's forehead was a scar, shaped like a lightning bolt. In the ruin that once was the Potter home, two orphaned children began to cry.
