This Little Girl

People were in shock. Were the borders really open? East Germans tentatively approached the border and indeed found that the border guards were letting people cross. Very quickly, the Berlin Wall was inundated with people from both sides. Some began chipping at the Berlin Wall with hammers and chisels. There was an impromptu huge celebration along the Berlin Wall, with people hugging, kissing, singing, cheering, and crying.

After the Berlin Wall came down, East and West Germany reunified into a single German state on October 3, 1990.

Almost a week went by when Austria sat next to me for breakfast. The sun was just about to come out from behind the hills. Italy was still sleeping in his bed. I pushed my pancake around in the "syrup". It tasted more like preservatives.

"Aren't you going to eat?" he asked, reading over the sheet music he had been working on.

I stayed quiet, and just kept pushing the pancake. I was to preoccupied with my thoughts to talk to someone who wouldn't listen to me anyway.

Austria set down the sheets and looked at me. "Hungary... I feel like we should talk."

I almost jumped out of my seat. Talk?...

I told Italy to go to bed at 7:30. It was 9 o'clock by the time I got him to fall asleep. 3 hours left to meet Prussia. I was only feet from the door when a hand gripped my shoulder.

"Hungary," a voice said, "Where are you going?"

I sighed, there was no way Austria would understand my wanting to meet Prussia. I turned to him and saw him working on a sheet of music.

"I need to take a walk. We weren't able to get to the park, and I can't stand just staying in this house all day. And no, going to the courtyard does not count as 'taking a walk'".
