C'était l'automne. C'était l'automne et c'était la saison de la guerre. Te souviens tu de la guerre? Moi, de moins en moins. Mais je me souviens de l'automne. Je vois encore les brouillards sur les prés à côté de la maison, e, au delà, les chêne silencieux dans le crépuscule. Les feuilles étaient tombeés dupuis septembre. Elles brunissaient et m'évocaient alors l'esprit de ma jeunesse, et aussi l'esprit de temps.
Souvent j'allais au bois. Je traversais les prés et je me perdais pour longtemps au dessous des branches, dans les ombres, parmi les feuilles. Une fois, avant d'entrer dans le bois, je me souviens qu'il y avait un cheval noir qui me fixait de loin. Il était au fond du petit champ. J'imaginais qu'il me regardait, alors que probablement il dormait. Pourquoi pense je maintenant à ce cheval? Je ne sais pas. Peut être pour la même raison je pense à tous ces mots j'ai écrit au même temps.
J'ai gardé la feuille où j'avais noté tout ce qui m'était venu à l'esprit. A l'époque, je croyais qu'ils m'appartenaient, mais maintenant, je sais qui j'avais tort. A chaque fois que les relis, je vois que je copiais seulement ce que quelqu'un m'avait raconté.
--N'aie pas peur. Je ne m'arrêterai pas. Je dois découvrir cette clairière. Et je ne m'arrêterai pas tant que je ne l'aurais pas trouvée. Sais tu ce qui me pousse à la chercher? Eh bien... personne. Ma femme est morte. Ma femme, ma fille et mon fils sont tous morts. Te souviens tu comment ils sont morts? Moi, de moins en moins. Je ne me souviens que du temps. Mes blessures ne sont plus mortelles, mais j'ai peur. J'ai peur de ne pas trouver cette clairière.
Je suis resté quelque temps à regarder les ombres, les feuilles et les branches. Ensuite, quand j'ai quitté le bois, je ne voyais que le brouillard autour de moi. Je ne pouvais voir ni la maison, ne les prés, seulement le brouillard. Et bien sûr, le cheval noir avait disparu.

Translation

It was the autumn. It was the autumn and it was the season of the war. Do you remember the war? Me, less and less. But I remember the autumn. I still see the fogs on the meadows beside the house, and, beyond, the quiet oaks in the twilight. The leaves have been falling since September. They browned, and the spirit of my youth, and also the spirit of time, was evoked in me then.
Often, I went to the wood. I crossed the meadows and I lost myself for a long time below the branches, in the shades, among the leaves. Once, before entering the wood, I remember that there was a black horse which fixed me from afar. It was at the bottom of the small field. I imagined that it looked at me, whereas probably it slept. Why do I think of that horse right now? I do not know. Perhaps for the same reason I think of all these words I wrote at the same time.
I kept the sheet of paper where I had made note of all that had come to mind. At the time, I believed that they belonged to me, but now I know that I was wrong. With each time I read them again, I see that I copied only what somebody had told me.
--Do not be afraid. I will not stop. I must discover this clearing. And I will not stop as much, as I would not have found it. Do you know who pushes me to seek it? Eh well... nobody. My wife died. My wife, my daughter and my son are all dead. Do you remember how they died? Me, less and less. I do not remember that time. My wounds are no longer fatal, but I am afraid. I am afraid of not finding this clearing.

I remained some time to look at the shadows, the leaves and the branches. Then, when I left the wood, I saw only the fog around me. I could see neither the house, nor the meadows, only the fog. And of course, the black horse had disappeared.
