End of Chapter 17
I saw her pull into the driveway, pulling up to her usual spot where the bikes were hidden. I saw her get out, her eyes huge as she realized what was parked next to her car. She was laughing softly as she pulled on one of the ribbons as I ran out of the house, doing my best not to run full speed.
"Ready?" I asked as I got closer, my voice sounding rough.
Bella held one hand up and looked around me, angling her neck so she could see up to the house. She must be worrying about it Billy was home, and if he was if he was watching us...which he wasn't since he wasn't home.
"Yeah." She said as she chewed on her lower lip, obviously nervous.
I shook my head at her as I loaded the trucks into the back of her ancient truck, noticing that the bikes seemed lighter then they had before...strange.
"Let's go." I said as I closed the gate on her truck and went around to climb into the passenger side. "I know the perfect spot...no one will catch us there."
Chapter 18
I directed her down the back roads to the highway where I had her go south away from town and all of the prying eyes that would rat us out to my father. I told her to pull off on a side road that took us into the forest, it's thick limbs brushing against the side of the truck life fingers grasping at the motorcycles in the back.
I was babbling on about the bikes, randomly asking her questions to see if she was paying attention when we pulled out of the forest and out onto the road that ran along the bluffs
"NO!!!" Bella screamed as she slammed on the brake, my body slamming against the seat belt.
"What's wrong?" I yelled back as I looked around trying to figure out what was freaking her out.
"That guy...he just jumped off that cliff! Why didn't they stop him?" She said as she started reaching into her jacket. "We've got to call an ambulance."
That's when I first saw them, Sam and the rest of 'the protectors.' They were showing off again, not caring about what was safe or smart..just doing things to look tough.
"Bella," I laughed as she threw the truck in park and climbed out of the truck. "They're just cliff diving. Recreation. La Push doesn't have a mall ya know."
"Cliff diving?" She asked, her eyes focused on the spot that Sam had been standing a few minutes ago.
A few seconds later she moved closer to the edge, her eyes as large as plates as she peered down to the water that was far below her. She took a deep breath as she slowly moved her foot back and took a step back from the edge, her skin a strange greenish color.
"Wow." She said, her voice thick with fear as she took another step back into her truck. "It must be a hundred feet."
"Well yeah." I said, surprised it bothered her this much. "Most of us jump from lower on the rocks that juts out from the cliff down there, about half way down."
"Those guys are insane. Probably show off how tough they are. I mean really, it's freezing today, that water can't feel good." I said as I stared out the window.
"You.....you jump off the cliffs?" She said as she turned in her chair to stare at me.
"Sure, sure." I said, realizing had said us. "It's fun. A little scary, but it's a total rush."
She was quiet for a minute as Jared walked up to the edge, both hands thrown up in the sky as if he were an Olympic swimmer/diver. I could see the smile on his face as he took a deep breath and dove off the cliff, his body disappearing below the rocks.
"Jake," She said as she turned and smiled at me. "You have to take me cliff diving."
I'm sure the look on my face was confused and insulted, I mean yeah me and my friends had done it a few times, and yeah it was scary..but it wasn't something I would want Bella to do...it was just TOO dangerous."
"Bella, you just wanted to call an ambulance when you saw them jump." I said as I frowned.
"I want to try." She said as she pouted.
"Not today, all right." I said as she smiled from ear to ear. "Can we at least wait for a warmer day?"
"Okay, fine." She said as she removed her hand from the door handle. "BUT I want to do it soon."
"Soon." I said as I rolled my eyes, wondering if she had lost all sanity she had. "Sometimes you're a little strange, Bella. Do you know that?"
"Yes." She said as she sighed.
"And," I said as she looked at me again. "And we're not jumping off the top."
She turned her head back and gasped as Paul took a few steps back before running as fast as he could, launching himself out into the open air.
"Fine." She said as Paul disappeared into nothingness. "Not the first time anyway."
She truly was one of the most stubborn people I had ever met, her eyes narrowed as she stared at me as if I wouldn't keep my promise..which I was hoping I wouldn't have to do.
"Are we going to try out the bikes or not?" I said, noticing the frustration in my own voice.
"Okay, Okay." She said as she peeled her eyes away from the cliffs and put her seat belt back on and put the car into drive, looking back over her shoulder once to look at the cliffs...her eyes lingering on the cliff before she sighed and looked back at the road.
