Lost Question

Alive or dead? Real or Ghosts? The Main Question of the LOST series finale.

I've been reading through a few amazing articals about the show, I just watched the finale sadly not knowing it already aired on Sunday night. *pouts* So I'm a little behind. :(
Anyway bringing me back to my question. I LOVED the ending except for one part, mainly cause I hope it's not true. My mother on the other hand despises the ending; which is sad since this was the only show she and I have been watching together since episode 1. Part of her reason for disliking it is my question.
So my question is:

In the Alternate Universe are they all dead? Per say Ghosts? And now after they have all found each other are going to go to some kind of heaven?

Or...

Are they Alive? My meaning being once they died in the island world in a way as a gift were sent to an Alternate World to live a life they couldn't live before together??

What do you think?

According to Christian's explanation at the end, everything on island was real. They lived, some died, some left, and some chose to stay. The island was the most important thing in their lives so when they died their spirits were waiting for each other in order to move on. They needed to resolve what was keeping them in a sort of limbo between both worlds and in order to do that they needed each other.

That was the sole purpose of the flashsideways. We were seeing a world they created in order to find each other after they died. A sort of meet up point. But much like 'The Sixth Sense' they had no conscious recollection of their former lives, apart from a feeling of deja vu. Until Desmond came along.

What happened to Desmond was that the electromagnetism allowed him to see into his own afterlife for brief period of time while still being alive. This was the reason for his total personality change directly after his exposure. To him what happened on island no longer mattered because he knew there was a better place regardless of what happened on island.

Oh thank you! I've spent years complaining about how the show doesn't make sense (and watching it anyway) and now it finally does.

Thanks for your opinion about that sudden change of Desmond! I think it is a brilliant explanation of all other things with Desmond. it was a "lost" Ilink for me! I agree with you totally! but I'd like to believe that for all of the characters in the "limbo" moving on means a kind of reincarnation - they are moving on to an other life, where they are seeking and finding each other definitely and are happy! Maybe I'm crazy with my idea, but I love it!

The flashsideways is like their afterlife where they need to remember their previous life on the island and after they left it in some cases to move on to whatever is next.

everything that happened on the island was real and they were alive. the sideways world (or limbo) was when they were dead, ghosts. and they needed to remember their real life in order for all of them to move on together
